LibreOffice 26.8 has no built-in generative AI. The Document Foundation (TDF), which supports the suite, says it may add AI to LibreOffice’s default setup only if an implementation meets conditions for privacy, user control, provider choice, document quality and optional installation. That is a conditional position—not a promise that LibreOffice will never support AI. Users can install third-party AI extensions, but those are separate software and do not automatically share TDF’s safeguards.
What did LibreOffice say about adding AI?
In a post published on 3 September 2026, Italo Vignoli of the TDF Community Blog said the project does not reject AI outright. Rather, the suite will not add an AI feature to its default configuration until it can be delivered under conditions set by the project. Vignoli described this as an assessment of current technology and available solutions, not a judgment on AI’s value.
TDF says it currently knows of no integration that meets all its requirements for default deployment and support throughout a release lifecycle. That is the Foundation’s assessment, not an independent audit of every AI product or extension. Its position leaves open the possibility of default integration if a suitable implementation becomes available.
Does LibreOffice 26.8 include AI?
No. TDF’s 26 August 2026 announcement for LibreOffice 26.8 states: “LibreOffice 26.8 contains no generative AI features.” The announcement also says no component of the suite requires network access to function. Those statements concern the core suite in that release; they do not describe network behavior or data handling for extensions installed separately.

What conditions would an AI feature have to meet?
TDF’s requirements address where AI runs, what data it can access, who provides it, how its output behaves in documents and whether users can opt out.
- User-controlled execution: Users should be able to choose inference on their own computer, on infrastructure they control, or through a service they independently select.
- Authorization before transmission: Document content must not leave the computer without the user’s authorization.
- No telemetry: An AI feature must not add usage-data collection.
- No single-provider dependency: Interfaces should allow multiple backends rather than locking users to one company’s API.
- Open Document Format fidelity: Generated content should use Open Document Format (ODF) and preserve document structure, styles and semantics.
- Optional installation and removal: Users and administrators who do not authorize the feature should be able to leave it uninstalled or remove it, with the feature absent from their interface.
These conditions explain why the question is not simply whether AI can be connected to an editor. TDF’s stated bar also covers control, privacy, interoperability and whether generated material remains a properly structured document.

Can you use AI with LibreOffice now?
Yes, if you choose to install a compatible third-party extension. TDF says some available extensions can connect to locally running models through Ollama, LM Studio or another OpenAI-compatible endpoint. This does not mean every extension runs locally: configurations and data handling vary.
Extensions are maintained by their authors, not automatically covered by TDF’s default-suite requirements. Before installing one, check who maintains it, how mature and actively maintained it is, which endpoint it uses, and what happens to document content. If the extension connects to a service, confirm whether content is sent off your computer and what authorization or service controls apply.

What does “no AI by default” mean in practice?
The distinction is between a feature included in LibreOffice’s standard setup and software a user adds independently. The former would be subject to the conditions TDF has set for default integration; an optional extension is a separate choice whose behavior depends on its author and configuration. Installing an extension therefore does not establish that it meets TDF’s policy criteria.
For now, readers looking for built-in generative AI in LibreOffice 26.8 should expect not to find it. Readers willing to evaluate add-ons can use extensions, including some that connect to local models, while checking the privacy and endpoint details themselves.
