The right alternative depends on what your team needs to manage: shared logins used by people, credentials and keys consumed by applications, or both. Passbolt is the clearest fit here for collaborative team credentials; OpenBao is built for infrastructure secrets and their lifecycle; Bitwarden’s 2025 materials describe self-hosted Enterprise options for its password and secrets products, subject to plan conditions. These tools solve related but different problems, so compare their workflows and operating requirements before choosing one.
Team passwords and infrastructure secrets are different jobs
A team password manager helps people store, organize, and share credentials such as account logins. An infrastructure secrets manager gives applications, CI/CD pipelines, and systems controlled access to items such as database credentials, API keys, or encryption keys. A tool that is useful for sharing employee logins is not automatically equipped for dynamic credentials, leases, or automated revocation.
Some products cover both areas, but feature depth and deployment eligibility can differ by product and plan. Decide which workflow is essential before comparing feature lists.
Shortlist: what each option is suited to
| Option | Primary workflow | Deployment and notable capabilities | Best fit and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passbolt | Shared human credentials, with some DevOps workflows | Its product page describes self-hosted and cloud-hosted options, individual credential and folder sharing with fine-grained access controls, personal and shared folders, desktop and mobile apps, and API, CLI, and SDK use cases. | Teams prioritizing collaborative credential sharing and permissions. Check the chosen edition for exact feature availability; these are vendor-described capabilities, not independently tested findings. |
| OpenBao | Infrastructure and application secrets | The OpenBao project describes encrypted key/value storage, dynamic secrets, lease renewal and automatic revocation, encryption as a service, identity-based access, and revocation of individual secrets or groups. Infisical’s vendor-authored comparison describes OpenBao as self-host-only. | Infrastructure teams able to operate a central secrets service. The deployment characterization is from Infisical, not an independent product comparison. |
| Bitwarden Password Manager and Secrets Manager | Human credentials and developer/infrastructure secrets through separate products | Bitwarden’s 2025 business-plan document describes self-hosting for Enterprise password organizations. Its 2025 Secrets Manager FAQ says Enterprise organizations can self-host Secrets Manager alongside existing self-hosted installations. | Teams considering both workflows within Bitwarden’s product family. Self-hosting and features depend on plan conditions described in those 2025 documents; confirm current terms. The cited materials do not establish licensing details comprehensively. |
How to choose by workflow
Choose for shared employee and service-account logins
If people need to share website, admin-console, or other human-used credentials, start with a team password manager. Evaluate whether users can share individual items or folders with the right permissions, whether personal and team credentials can be separated, and whether administration and audit features meet your requirements. Passbolt’s product page specifically describes fine-grained sharing and both personal and shared folders.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Choose for application and infrastructure credentials
If software, CI/CD, or infrastructure needs to retrieve secrets, assess the lifecycle as well as storage: identity-based access, secret creation and expiry, lease renewal, revocation, and integrations with the systems that consume the credentials. OpenBao’s project describes dynamic secrets, leases, and revocation as core functions. Infisical’s comparison characterizes OpenBao as Vault-like and notes operational complexity; that is a vendor’s assessment, not neutral testing.
Choose a combined approach only after checking boundaries
A team may need both a password manager for human use and a secrets service for machines. A product family offering both can simplify some administration, but it does not remove the need to check which plan includes each function, how the products integrate, or whether their access controls and audit trails meet each workflow. Bitwarden’s 2025 FAQ explicitly distinguishes infrastructure secrets handled by Secrets Manager from employees’ personal credentials handled by Password Manager.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What to compare before committing
- Access and governance: Check group management, item- or folder-level permissions, identity integration, audit or event logs, and how quickly access can be revoked.
- Secret lifecycle: For machine secrets, determine whether static storage is enough or whether you need dynamic credentials, leases, automated revocation, rotation, or certificate and key management.
- Clients and integrations: Verify the browser, desktop, and mobile clients people need, as well as CLI, API, CI/CD, Kubernetes, and identity-system support for your technical workflows.
- Deployment eligibility: Confirm whether the edition and tier you plan to buy can be self-hosted, whether a cloud-hosted option is available, and what components must be operated by your team.
- Commercial terms: Compare current subscription costs and feature gates with infrastructure and staff time. Open-source software or self-hosting does not mean zero total cost.
Self-hosting transfers operational responsibility
Self-hosting gives a team control over where and how a service is deployed, but it also makes the team responsible for keeping that service dependable. Before choosing it, assign owners and document the procedures for:
- Deployment, configuration, and patching.
- Monitoring, capacity, and availability.
- Encrypted backups and tested restoration.
- Recovery access if the usual administrators or identity service are unavailable.
- User and service access administration, including timely revocation.
These obligations apply to the service the team runs; they are not solved simply by selecting software whose source is available. Compare the total operating burden with the managed option, including the time needed to maintain and recover the system.

Plan and security details to verify
Bitwarden’s 2025 business-plan document lists self-hosting for the Enterprise password organization and says self-hosted organizations can use the paid features of their chosen plan. Its Secrets Manager FAQ says Enterprise organizations can self-host that service alongside existing self-hosted installations. The documents also list free and paid Secrets Manager tiers with feature limits. Because these are 2025 materials and product terms can change, check current plan eligibility, pricing, geography, and billing directly with Bitwarden before making a decision.
The same Bitwarden business-plan document lists FIDO2 and YubiKey among two-step login methods. Treat this as a prompt to check the authentication methods supported by the specific product and plan you select; it does not establish that every option in this shortlist supports the same methods.
