Start by checking what your turntable will connect to. Your setup needs a phono stage—built into the turntable, included in your amplifier’s PHONO input, or supplied by a separate phono preamp. Once you know which connection you need, compare drive design, automation, cartridge and setup requirements. Those details determine whether a turntable fits your equipment and how much work it takes to get listening.
1. Match the turntable to your existing equipment
Before comparing features, trace the audio path from the turntable to your speakers. A turntable’s cartridge produces a phono-level signal that needs phono equalization and amplification before it can feed a standard line-level input. That phono stage may be built into the turntable, built into an amplifier or receiver, or supplied by a separate phono preamp.
If your amplifier has a PHONO input
Connect a turntable without an active built-in phono stage to the amplifier’s PHONO input. That input includes the phono stage the signal needs. Check the turntable’s manual for the correct output mode if it also has a PHONO/LINE or EQ switch.
If your amplifier has only line-level inputs
Use a turntable with a built-in phono preamp and set its output to LINE, or add a standalone phono preamp between the turntable and a line-level input such as AUX. A turntable set to PHONO needs a phono input or external phono preamp; connecting it directly to a line input can produce very quiet audio.

Set PHONO/LINE correctly
The switch tells the turntable whether to send a phono-level signal or one that has been equalized and raised to line level. Match the output to the input: LINE to a regular line-level input, PHONO to a phono input or external phono preamp. Sony warns that an incorrect setting can result in low audio. Draw the connection chain before buying—for example, turntable with built-in preamp (LINE) → receiver AUX → speakers, or turntable (PHONO) → receiver PHONO → speakers. This simple check can prevent buying equipment that needs a component you do not have.

2. Choose drive design for your use, not as a sound-quality shortcut
Belt-drive and direct-drive describe how the motor turns the platter. Both are established turntable designs, and the available manufacturer guidance does not establish one as a universal sound-quality winner. Do not treat drive type alone as a reliable ranking; consider the particular model and how you plan to use it.
- Belt-drive: The platter is driven by a belt connected to the motor.
- Direct-drive: The motor drives the platter directly.
Denon’s first-turntable guide discusses both designs. Compare the full feature set and setup instructions of models you are considering instead of assuming that either category guarantees better results.

3. Decide how much automation you want
Manual turntables require you to position the tonearm to begin playback and return it at the end. A fully automatic model can handle starting and stopping at the push of a button, according to Denon. Automation may make everyday operation simpler, but the exact functions vary: check the specific model’s documentation rather than assuming every automatic turntable behaves the same way.
4. Check the cartridge and its replacement path
The cartridge holds the stylus that tracks the record groove. For a straightforward first setup, look for a turntable that includes a moving-magnet (MM) cartridge already mounted and aligned. Denon recommends this as a way to start listening without making cartridge installation part of the initial setup.

Also check the model documentation for replacement styli and cartridge-upgrade options. Compatibility is model-specific, so do not assume a cartridge or stylus will fit just because it is described as MM. The cartridge and turntable instructions should identify supported parts and any setup requirements.

Tracking force is the downward force the stylus applies to the record. Set it to the cartridge maker’s recommendation and follow the turntable manual; there is no one setting that applies to every cartridge. For example, the Audio-Technica AT-LP8X manual specifies a range of 1.8–2.2 g for that model, with 2.0 g as the standard setting. That figure is specific to the AT-LP8X, not a general target for other turntables.

If a turntable lets you adjust tracking force, confirm that you can follow its setup procedure accurately. A tracking-force gauge is optional; first check whether the supplied instructions and any included setup tools are sufficient for your model.
6. Use this checklist before choosing a model
- List your equipment: Identify the amplifier or speakers you will connect, and check whether the system has a PHONO input or only line-level inputs.
- Choose the phono-stage arrangement: Decide whether you need a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, will use an amplifier’s PHONO input, or need a separate phono preamp.
- Confirm the output mode: Check the manual for the PHONO/LINE or EQ switch and match it to the input receiving the signal.
- Choose operation and drive design: Decide whether you prefer manual control or automatic start-and-stop operation; compare belt-drive and direct-drive models on their complete features rather than drive type alone.
- Review cartridge and setup details: Confirm what cartridge is included, how to replace its stylus, what upgrades are supported, and which tracking-force instructions apply.
