Gen5 is most useful when your system supports it and your work moves large amounts of data; for everyday use, weigh workflow gains against price, capacity, power, and cooling.
What changes between PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0?
The generations differ in how quickly data can travel over the PCIe connection. Samsung Business Insights reports signaling rates of 16 GT/s per lane for PCIe 4.0 and 32 GT/s per lane for PCIe 5.0. With four lanes, Samsung describes PCIe 4.0’s theoretical throughput as nearly 8 GB/s—half the PCIe 5.0 x4 figure. These are interface ceilings, not guaranteed SSD or application speeds.
GT/s describes transfers per second per lane; GB/s expresses throughput after encoding and lane-aggregation assumptions. A drive’s actual performance also depends on the SSD itself and the host system’s M.2 slot and lane configuration. Check the motherboard or system manual for the capability of the specific socket you plan to use.
Does PCIe 5.0 make a noticeable real-world difference?
It can, particularly when a task reads or writes large amounts of data and the drive and system can sustain high sequential throughput. That makes Gen5 bandwidth relevant to workloads such as large file transfers and other sustained data movement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It does not follow that booting, opening an application, or loading a game will be twice as fast. Those tasks depend on more than the interface’s peak bandwidth, and sequential throughput is not a direct measure of their completion time. The cited PC Gamer guide describes synthetic and real-world testing methods, but the available evidence does not establish a controlled, same-capacity Gen4-versus-Gen5 result for game or application loading. There is no supported universal percentage improvement to apply to those everyday tasks.
Which SSD should you choose?
Choose PCIe 5.0 when bandwidth fits the work
- Your motherboard or system has a Gen5 M.2 slot with the lane width required by the drive.
- Your workload regularly moves large files or otherwise benefits from sustained sequential throughput.
- The particular drive’s price, capacity, warranty, power use, and cooling requirements make sense for your build.
As a model-specific illustration, Sandisk’s 2025 WD_BLACK SN8100 solution brief lists read speeds of up to 14,900 MB/s. That is a manufacturer maximum specification for that product and configuration, not an independent test result or a typical sustained transfer rate.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Choose PCIe 4.0 when it better fits the system or budget
- Your system has a Gen4 slot, or your everyday workload is unlikely to benefit from Gen5’s higher sequential bandwidth.
- You can get the capacity and performance you need without paying for bandwidth your system or tasks will not use.
- A model’s power and cooling characteristics are a better fit for your case or laptop.
Neither generation is automatically the better buy. Current regional street prices and comparable same-capacity pricing are not established here, so compare current local prices, stock, warranty, and independent tests of the specific models before choosing.
Check compatibility before buying or installing
- Read the system or motherboard manual. Confirm the exact M.2 socket’s PCIe generation and lane width; the SSD’s label alone does not establish what the host supports.
- Check physical fit. Verify the M.2 form factor and clearance, especially if the SSD has a large attached heatsink.
- Review lane sharing and routing. Some platforms share lanes or configure slots differently. Use the documentation for your exact system rather than assuming every M.2 socket behaves alike.
- Confirm boot support for older systems. If this will be an older system’s first NVMe boot drive, check whether its firmware and motherboard support booting from NVMe; some older boards may not.
- Set expectations for mixed generations. A drive and slot negotiate at the generation the host supports, so a Gen5 SSD in a Gen4 system will not provide a Gen5 link.
Cooling and power: compare the specific drive
Thermals are model-dependent, not a simple Gen5-versus-Gen4 rule. Sandisk says many first-generation Gen5 SSDs used more power and needed active or passive cooling to manage heat. Its newer SN8100 brief describes controller and efficiency improvements. PC Gamer’s current guide says recent Gen5 drives run cooler than early models but can still run hotter than an average Gen4 drive.

Use the motherboard’s included M.2 heatsink when it is compatible and makes proper contact with the SSD. Add a separate heatsink only if the chosen drive and system configuration need one and the case has enough clearance; a heatsink is not mandatory for every Gen5 SSD.
