To stop Google from using your account information and activity to personalize ads, open My Ad Center, switch Personalized ads off, and confirm. To see fewer ads about particular topics or brands without turning personalization off, use the preferences in Customize Ads. Neither option guarantees that every ad or product listing disappears from Google Shopping: Google describes these controls as applying to ads on Google services, but its Help pages do not specify how every Shopping placement is handled.

Turn off personalized ads for your Google Account

  1. Sign in to the Google Account you use for Google services and open My Ad Center.
  2. Find Personalized ads and switch the setting off.
  3. Confirm your choice if prompted.

Google says it will then stop using information and activity saved to your account, along with your My Ad Center choices, to personalize ads. Ads can still appear based on general or contextual factors rather than your account profile. Google says the signed-in setting applies across its services on devices where you are signed in; it does not control ads served by non-Google platforms or other sites’ ad systems.

See fewer ads about a topic or brand

If you want to keep personalized ads but reduce ads about certain subjects or companies, open Customize Ads in My Ad Center. Choose topics or brands and ask to see fewer ads about them; Google says these preferences are saved automatically.

This adjusts the frequency, not a block list. Google Help puts it plainly: “Customizing your ads doesn’t block ad topics or brands.” An ad related to a topic may still appear, for example after you search for a relevant product.

Limit ads about selected sensitive topics

For signed-in users on Google Search, YouTube, and Discover, My Ad Center offers limits for ads about alcohol, dating, gambling, pregnancy and parenting, and weight loss. Google describes this as a best effort to avoid those ads, not a guarantee: related ads may still appear, including contextual ads after a relevant search. These controls are not a universal ad block or a confirmed setting for every Google Shopping placement.

Review the activity used for ad personalization

In My Ad Center’s Manage Privacy area, you can review separate controls for activity on sites and apps, YouTube History for ads, and areas where you have used Google. Turning off Activity on sites and apps for ads means that activity will not help personalize ads; it does not turn off personalized recommendations on Google services such as Search. This is a narrower adjustment than switching off Personalized ads altogether.

Why ads may still appear in Google Shopping

  • Turning personalization off does not remove all ads. Google says ads may still be selected using general or contextual factors.
  • A preference for fewer ads is not a block. A relevant search may still lead to an ad about the topic or brand you selected.
  • Other platforms have their own controls. Google’s account setting does not govern ads delivered by non-Google platforms.
  • Shopping-specific coverage is not fully specified. Google’s Help pages describe controls for Google services but do not confirm that every Shopping surface or placement behaves identically.

Choose the control that fits

Control What it changes What to expect
Personalized ads off Stops Google from using saved account information, activity, and My Ad Center choices to personalize ads on Google services. Ads may remain based on general or contextual factors; the setting does not control other platforms.
Fewer ads about topics or brands Reduces the frequency of ads about selected subjects or brands. Does not block them; related ads can still appear, including after a relevant search.
Sensitive-topic limits Asks Google to limit selected sensitive-topic ads on Search, YouTube, and Discover for signed-in users. Google says it makes a best effort; related or contextual ads may still appear.
Activity controls Changes whether specified activity can be used to personalize ads. Does not itself turn off all ad personalization or personalized recommendations.
