SteamOS does not provide a documented built-in layer for running Android apps. On Steam Deck, the practical community route is Waydroid: it runs a full Android system in a Linux container, rather than translating Android apps through Proton. It can make some apps usable, but installation takes extra setup and compatibility depends on the app and the specific SteamOS configuration.
What runs Android apps on Steam Deck?
Waydroid is the relevant option described in the available project documentation. It uses Linux namespaces to run Android as a containerized system on Linux. The Waydroid documentation describes its customized LineageOS-based runtime as currently based on Android 13: Waydroid documentation.
This is different from Proton. Valve describes Proton as the compatibility layer for running Windows games on SteamOS; it is not an Android runtime. Waydroid boots an Android environment, and apps run inside that environment. Valve’s Proton and Steam Deck compatibility information
What to check before installing an app
APK architecture
Steam Deck uses an x86_64 processor architecture. Waydroid warns that APKs found online may support only ARM and will not work on x86_64. Check the APK’s supported architecture before installing it; an Android app download is not automatically compatible just because it is an APK. Waydroid install and run applications guide

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
App dependencies and services
Architecture is only one compatibility factor. An app may rely on particular Android services, device features, DRM, or other requirements. The cited setup guidance does not establish whether any specific app, game, streaming service, Play Store configuration, or anti-cheat system will work. There is no app-by-app compatibility matrix in these sources, so check the individual app’s requirements and treat its behavior as uncertain until tested on your configuration.
Desktop Mode and Game Mode
The community installation instructions require Desktop Mode and a working graphical session. They document launching installed apps through the desktop menu or with Waydroid’s command-line tools; they do not establish that every app integrates cleanly with Steam Deck’s Game Mode controls or interface. How to install and launch an APK
The following app commands come from Waydroid’s documentation. They assume Waydroid is already installed and running in a compatible environment; they are not a complete Steam Deck installation procedure.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

A compatible, verified bundle for the SteamOS userspace. The maintainer treats development and main branches as experimental.
The bundle README identifies Android 13 as its normal supported path and offers separate experimental Android 16 images. It reports that Waydroid 1.6.3 booted, ran, and shut down Android 16 on a particular SteamOS Beta build, while Android 16 lifecycle behavior was unreliable with Waydroid 1.5.4 on a particular Stable build. These are the maintainer’s reports for those configurations, not independent tests or a guarantee for other Steam Decks or SteamOS builds. Check the bundle’s current compatibility guidance before installing or changing images. Community bundle README and compatibility guidance

SteamOS desktop software installation uses Discover and Flatpak. Valve warns that software installed outside Flatpak may be removed by a SteamOS update: “In addition, anything you install outside of flatpak (via pacman for instance) may be wiped with the next SteamOS update.” See Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop FAQ. Before an update or repair, check the bundle maintainer’s current instructions and back up important Android data. The bundle also describes repair steps for compatible configurations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Waydroid does—and does not—promise
Waydroid supplies an Android system environment; that does not mean every Android app will run, or that SteamOS has gained native Android support. Compatibility depends on the APK architecture, app requirements, and the particular Waydroid and SteamOS setup. The available guidance does not guarantee Google Play certification, DRM playback, anti-cheat compatibility, or reliable streaming. Consider Waydroid a community-maintained option to try for a specific app, not a universal Android compatibility layer built into SteamOS.
