Start with qubits, gates, measurement, and entanglement; choose one beginner course and its programming tools; then build a small circuit in a simulator. You do not need to own quantum hardware or run a job on a real device to begin. Hardware access is an optional later experiment, not a prerequisite for learning the basics.
What to learn first
Quantum computing uses quantum-mechanical behavior to perform certain computational tasks. Its introductory ideas can feel unfamiliar, but a small set of concepts is enough to begin writing and inspecting simple circuits.
- Qubits and states: A qubit is the basic unit in a quantum circuit. Learn how its state is represented and how it differs from a classical bit.
- Gates: Gates change qubit states. A circuit is a sequence of operations applied to one or more qubits.
- Measurement: Measuring a qubit produces a classical result. Because outcomes can vary, repeated measurements help show the behavior of a circuit.
- Entanglement: Entangled qubits have linked measurement behavior that cannot be explained by treating each qubit as an independent system.
A basic grasp of linear algebra is useful. You can still start with beginner lessons and learn the math alongside the concepts; Microsoft’s beginner path explicitly lists basic linear algebra as a prerequisite, as well as familiarity with Visual Studio Code and the Azure ecosystem.
Choose one learning route
Pick a single ecosystem for your first course and project rather than installing or learning several providers’ tools at once. The main choice is whether you want Python-oriented materials, a guided Q# sequence, or direct onboarding to AWS’s quantum cloud service.

| Route | Good fit | What the official material covers | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| IBM Quantum Learning and Qiskit | Learners who want quantum-information concepts alongside Python-oriented programming materials. | The course catalog includes foundational quantum information, quantum algorithms, general quantum information, and error correction. Qiskit documentation directs first-time users to its Get started tutorials. | Use the current IBM Quantum Learning course catalog and Qiskit tutorials. IBM’s former Getting started with Qiskit learning path is no longer available at its old URL. |
| Microsoft Learn, Q#, and Azure Quantum | Learners who prefer a guided sequence with explicit exercises. | The beginner path covers fundamentals, a quantum random-number generator, superposition, teleportation, and resource estimation. | Microsoft lists basic linear algebra, Visual Studio Code familiarity, and basic Azure ecosystem knowledge as prerequisites. The Microsoft Learn beginner path is a structured route into Q# and Azure Quantum. |
| AWS Braket | Learners who specifically want to explore AWS’s quantum cloud service. | AWS’s getting-started documentation points to the Braket Digital Learning Plan and setup steps, including enabling Braket and creating a notebook instance. | Cloud onboarding differs from local simulation. Check current service access, regions, device availability, and costs before submitting jobs; the reviewed getting-started page does not establish current pricing. See AWS’s Amazon Braket getting-started documentation. |
These routes are not interchangeable setup instructions. IBM pairs course materials with Qiskit tutorials, Microsoft offers a guided Q# sequence, and AWS focuses on getting started with its cloud service. For Microsoft’s own description of its offering, the Learn page says, “Whether you’re a developer or simply someone who wants to get a feel for what quantum computing is all about, this learning path and Azure Quantum are the best combo to start exploring quantum computing.” That is Microsoft’s positioning of its own path, not an independent comparison.
Build a first project in a simulator
A simulator lets you run a small circuit on an ordinary computer and inspect its measurement behavior without arranging access to a quantum device. Begin with a project that makes one concept visible, then change one part and compare what happens.

Quantum random-number generator
Microsoft’s Q# beginner path includes a random-number generator exercise. Use it to practice preparing a qubit, measuring it, and handling the resulting classical value in code. One run does not establish that a source produces perfect randomness; focus on understanding the circuit and its outcomes.
Superposition and measurement
Use the superposition lesson in Microsoft’s path to prepare and measure a single qubit. Run the circuit repeatedly and record the outcomes. Compare the observed distribution with the behavior the lesson predicts; a single measurement is not enough to characterize a probabilistic circuit.

Entanglement and teleportation
Microsoft’s path also includes an entangled-qubit and teleportation exercise. Treat teleportation as a circuit-level demonstration of a protocol that transfers a quantum state using shared entanglement and classical communication. It is not faster-than-light communication.
CHSH inequality
After you are comfortable with basic gates and measurements, try the CHSH inequality tutorial listed in the beginner section of IBM’s Qiskit tutorials. It is a more ambitious next step because it connects circuits and measurement results to a quantum algorithm topic.

Use a repeatable learning loop
- Study one concept. Learn the relevant vocabulary and what the circuit is meant to do before focusing on syntax.
- Run the smallest example. Use the course’s simulator-first exercise and note the expected measurement behavior.
- Change one thing. Modify a gate, input state, or number of repetitions. Avoid changing several variables at once, so you can interpret the result.
- Compare expectation with output. Record what you expected and what the simulator produced. For probabilistic results, use repeated measurements rather than treating one output as decisive.
- Debug before adding complexity. Check the circuit and measurement handling when the output differs from expectations; then make the next extension only after the basic behavior is clear.
- Consider hardware only when useful. Once you understand the circuit, follow the provider’s current device-access steps if you want to explore a cloud quantum device.
This gradual path—from single-qubit systems and measurements to entanglement, teleportation, and simple algorithms, followed by debugging and hardware exploration—is also illustrated in a published teaching report on a Qiskit undergraduate approach: Quantum Computing: an undergraduate approach using Qiskit. Another teaching report describes instruction using Microsoft’s Quantum Development Kit and Azure Quantum: Teaching Quantum Computing using Microsoft Quantum Development Kit and Azure Quantum. Cloud-device jobs may involve significant waits, so remote hardware is less predictable than running a local simulation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep expectations realistic
- No hardware purchase is needed. A simulator on an ordinary computer is enough for the first concepts and projects.
- Quantum does not mean faster at everything. Introductory examples should not be taken as evidence that quantum computers outperform classical computers on ordinary everyday workloads.
- Cloud access adds its own variables. Service availability, regions, device access, setup, and job wait times can affect the hardware experience. Review the provider’s current terms and setup information before launching a job.
- Course estimates are not proficiency guarantees. Providers may show estimated workloads for individual courses, but those estimates do not establish how long a learner will need to become proficient.
Optional: add a book or workbook later
A beginner quantum computing textbook or workbook can be a useful supplement if you want a paper-based reference or guided exercises. A 2021 undergraduate teaching paper describes reproducible Qiskit code and material for readers to carry out projects, which supports using books as an adjunct—not as a requirement. No particular current title is established here as the best choice, so start with the free official course and project materials before buying one.
