Android apps do not run natively on SteamOS as a documented SteamOS feature. If you installed them through Waydroid, troubleshoot three separate layers: SteamOS and its Waydroid integration, the Waydroid container or session, and the Android app package itself. Start with Steam’s basic update and restart steps, then use the checks below to identify which layer is failing.
First, confirm how the Android app was installed
Steam Support’s guidance covers SteamOS stability and non-Steam apps; it does not document native Android app execution as a SteamOS feature. The relevant Android route in the documentation cited here is Waydroid, a separately installed community-supported environment. If you are not using Waydroid, identify the Android runtime or installation method before applying Waydroid-specific commands.
For a Waydroid setup, classify the failure before changing anything:
- Host integration or bundle: Waydroid stopped working after a SteamOS update, or its installer reports an unsupported target.
- Container or session: Waydroid will not start, a second profile is blocked, or the failure differs between Desktop Mode and Gaming Mode.
- App package: Waydroid starts, but one app is missing or closes when launched.
Apply Steam’s basic stability checks
- In Gaming Mode, open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install available SteamOS updates.
- Restart the Steam Deck or other SteamOS device.
- If the issue continues, exit or disable other third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, then restart and test again.
These are Steam Support’s baseline suggestions for non-Steam app stability, not a guaranteed fix for Waydroid. If the problem persists, the app’s or runtime’s support channel may be able to help with its specific failure.

Check whether the app is installed and launch it by package name
Waydroid’s documentation provides commands to list, install, and launch apps. Open Konsole in Desktop Mode and use the app’s actual Android package name for the launch command:
waydroid app list— list installed apps and their package names.waydroid app launch com.foo.bar— launch the app whose package name iscom.foo.bar; replace it with the name shown for your app.waydroid app install xyz.apk— install an APK file namedxyz.apk.
You can also try starting an installed app from the Desktop Mode Application Menu. If the app is absent from the list, confirm that installation completed and that you are checking the correct Waydroid environment.

Check APK architecture before replacing the package
Waydroid warns that APKs found online may support ARM only. Such a package may not work on an x86_64 device. Check that the APK supports x86_64 before trying another download; an ARM-only package failure does not mean the Steam Deck needs different hardware.
Check Waydroid bundle compatibility after a SteamOS update
If you use the independently maintained SteamOS Waydroid Bundle, its installer requires a published bundle for the current SteamOS target that is exact or ABI-compatible. The target is not determined by the SteamOS version number alone: the installer’s README says the relevant details include the build, branch, and target. A “no compatible bundle” error means the installer has not identified a suitable bundle for that system.

Do not bypass that compatibility check. The maintainer’s documented options are to wait for a compatible bundle, return to a SteamOS deployment supported by the installer, or follow the maintainer’s build procedure. These are instructions for that community installer, not Valve support policy. Check the project’s current README for its Desktop Mode installation and recovery steps.
After an atomic SteamOS update, the bundle documentation says to run its installer again only if a compatible target bundle is available. With an existing Android image, a normal installer run enters repair mode: it validates the image read-only and rebuilds host packages and integration without replacing Android.

Compare Desktop Mode and Gaming Mode, then check for a stale session
If a Waydroid app entry fails in Gaming Mode, test the app from the documented Desktop Mode launcher. A difference between the two modes can help distinguish an app-specific problem from an integration or session problem; it does not by itself identify the cause.
The bundle maintainer documents a stale-container case after leaving Waydroid running in Gaming Mode. Starting another profile may then produce an error like “another Waydroid profile is active.” Follow the current bundle README’s instructions to leave Gaming Mode and shut down the matching main or test environment from Desktop Mode. The helper command and paths are specific to that installer, so do not substitute them for universal Waydroid commands. If the container does not shut down cleanly, the maintainer advises rebooting.

Check targeted Waydroid issues only when symptoms fit
- Garbled or flickering display: Waydroid’s known-issues documentation identifies dual-GPU systems as a possible cause. This is a relevant lead when the display is corrupted or flickers, not an explanation for every launch failure.
- Android 13 or later: Waydroid says the home filesystem needs ACL support. Check the filesystem requirement if you use Android 13 or later and have startup or environment problems; the documentation does not say this condition causes every app launch failure.
Protect Android data before reinstalling
Repairing the SteamOS Waydroid Bundle is different from reinstalling Android. The maintainer says its repair mode preserves the existing Android image, while reinstalling Android can affect app data. If that data matters, back up the persistent Android image and the associated user-state directories together before reinstalling or making changes that could replace them. Use the current project README to identify the relevant files and procedures for your installation.
How to interpret version-specific bundle reports
The bundle maintainer has reported that Waydroid 1.6.3 on SteamOS Beta 3.8.25 (build 20260807.2) booted, ran, and shut down Android 16 in its hardware test. The maintainer also reported less reliable container lifecycle behavior with Waydroid 1.5.4 on SteamOS Stable 3.8.16 (build 20260716.1). These are project-maintainer reports about specific configurations, not independent tests or a guarantee for other SteamOS builds. The project describes regular Android 13 images as normal-install choices and Android 16 x86_64 images as experimental test choices; an experimental image is not the default fix for a launch problem.
