A sell stop becomes a market order when its stop price is reached, and a short-term, intraday price move can reach that level. You can choose the level deliberately and check how your broker triggers orders, but no universal buffer is established. A stop-limit order sets a minimum sale price, but it may not execute.
Why normal market volatility can trigger a stop
A stop order, also called a stop-loss order, instructs your broker to submit an order when the security reaches a specified stop price. For a sell stop, reaching that price activates a market order; it does not guarantee a sale at the stop price. The order executes against available liquidity, so the execution price may differ significantly from the trigger price. The SEC explains these mechanics in its Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders – Investor Bulletin.
A short-term, intraday price move can therefore activate a stop even if the price later recovers. The SEC advises considering short-term price fluctuations when selecting a stop price, but does not prescribe a universally appropriate percentage or distance. There is no fixed buffer that can ensure an order will not trigger during ordinary volatility.
Compare the order types before choosing one
| Order type | What happens at the trigger | What it controls | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop (stop-loss) | Becomes a market order | Submits a sell order after the stop price is reached | A brief dip can trigger it, and the execution price can differ from the stop price. |
| Stop-limit | Becomes a limit order | Sets a minimum acceptable sale price; execution must be at the limit price or better | If the market moves below the limit, the order may not execute and the position may remain open. |
| Trailing stop | The stop level follows favorable price movement by a specified dollar amount or percentage | Adjusts the trigger as the market moves favorably and stays fixed when it moves adversely | Short-term fluctuations can still trigger it, and execution price may differ from the stop price. |
These orders trade off price control against the chance of completing a sale. None is automatically best: the appropriate mechanics depend on the role the order plays in your plan and the risk you are prepared to accept.

What to check with your broker
Brokerage firms can use different standards to determine whether a stop price has been reached. Some trigger orders using last-sale prices; others use quotation prices. Order availability and firm rules may also vary. Before relying on an order, ask your broker:
- Does this order trigger on the last sale, a quote, or another standard?
- Is this order type available for the security and trading session I have in mind?
- What happens to the order after it triggers, including any applicable handling rules?
The SEC’s order-types bulletin describes variation in broker practices. Review your firm’s own terms for the rules that apply to your account.

How to set an order with volatility in mind
- Decide the order’s purpose. Determine what role a triggered sale should play in your investment plan; the order mechanics alone cannot determine whether selling is appropriate for you.
- Review the security’s short-term price behavior. Choose a stop level deliberately with short-term fluctuations in mind. The SEC does not endorse a fixed percentage, volatility formula, or “safe” distance.
- Confirm the broker’s trigger standard and availability. Check whether the order is based on last-sale prices or quotations, and whether it is supported for the security and session.
- Choose between execution and price control. A stop order can submit a market sale once triggered, but the execution price is not guaranteed. A stop-limit constrains the minimum sale price, but the sale may not happen if the market moves away.
For example, the SEC bulletin illustrates a trailing stop set $1 below a market price: as the stock rises from $22 to a peak of $24, the stop follows to $23. That example explains how a trailing stop moves; it is not a recommended setting.

The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance states: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” Its bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, also says it reflects staff views and is not a rule or regulation. A stop can be activated by an intraday fluctuation, and a stop-limit can leave the position open rather than execute at an unacceptable price. These are distinct risks, so choose based on which outcome matters more to you.
