Sometimes—but using Amazon Bedrock in Mumbai does not by itself guarantee that Claude prompts and responses are processed only in India. The answer depends on the exact Claude model, endpoint, inference profile and retention settings. Direct in-Region inference can keep processing in Mumbai; cross-Region inference may route the request elsewhere, and some Bedrock APIs retain content under their own settings.

What determines whether Claude data stays in India?

There are two separate questions: where Bedrock processes an inference request, and whether the request or response is retained afterward. A Mumbai endpoint or source Region alone does not settle either question. Check the selected model and inference profile in AWS’s regional availability documentation.

  • In-Region inference: A direct invocation of a model in Mumbai confines inference processing to that Region.
  • Geographic cross-Region inference: Bedrock may process the request in another Region within the profile’s designated geography. That can mean leaving Mumbai; verify that every permitted destination is in India if India-only processing is required. AWS describes geographic cross-Region inference as keeping processing within specified geographic boundaries, but the availability of an India profile depends on the model.
  • Global cross-Region inference: Bedrock can select a commercial AWS Region worldwide, so this is not appropriate for an India-only processing requirement.

AWS explains the routing options in its geographic cross-Region inference and global cross-Region inference documentation. Global routing is also described in the cross-Region inference guide.

Claude model availability in Mumbai is not uniform

Do not assume all Claude models support the same routing options. AWS’s model cards illustrate why you must check the exact model and endpoint:

Claude model Mumbai options documented by AWS What that means for residency
Claude 3 Haiku In-Region and cross-Region inference Direct in-Region inference is listed; cross-Region use requires checking the profile’s permitted destinations.
Claude Fable 5.1 For bedrock-runtime, Mumbai is listed as global-only; no in-Region or geographic option is shown. Global-only routing does not establish India-only processing.

These are model-specific examples, not a guarantee about other Claude versions or endpoints. Availability and profile destinations can change, so use the current model card and profile details for the deployment you intend to run.

Processing location and retention are different

Where inference runs does not automatically answer where content is retained. AWS describes Bedrock as providing zero operator access and, by default, zero data retention for model inputs and outputs, while documenting exceptions for abuse detection. Its abuse-detection documentation says traffic for Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 may be retained for up to 30 days for automated offline abuse detection; classifier-flagged traffic may be subject to human review by AWS. AWS says retained content is processed by AWS and not shared with third-party model providers.

For cross-Region inference where this retention applies, AWS says retained inputs and outputs are stored in the destination Region that processed the request. That means the retention location follows the processing destination, not necessarily the source Region. See AWS’s data-retention documentation alongside the model-specific abuse-detection policy.

Responses API storage has its own setting

If you use the Bedrock Responses API, check its store parameter rather than assuming the general default-retention description covers it. AWS documents store=true as the default, retaining request and response content for 30 days. Setting store=false disables that retention behavior for the request or response. This setting is specific to the Responses API; it should not be treated as a universal control for every Bedrock API.

For bedrock-runtime, when cross-Region inference is used and a response is stored, AWS says it can reside in the Region that processed it. Details are in the Responses API documentation.

How to configure for an India-only requirement

  1. Identify the exact model and endpoint. Consult its current AWS model card and the regional availability table for Mumbai support. Do not rely on the Region selected in your client alone.
  2. Choose direct in-Region inference. If strict India-only processing is required, use a model that supports in-Region inference in Mumbai and invoke its direct regional model ID, not a cross-Region profile.
  3. Review any acceptable geographic profile. If geography-level routing is allowed, inspect the profile’s listed source and destination Regions and confirm that all permitted destinations meet your policy. A geographic label alone does not prove every request remains in India.
  4. Check the applicable retention controls. Review the current abuse-detection policy for the model and the storage setting for the API you call. For the Responses API, explicitly evaluate whether store should be false.
  5. Verify actual cross-Region processing in audit records. AWS says CloudTrail event data can identify the processing Region for cross-Region inference in additionalEventData.inferenceRegion. See the cross-Region inference documentation.

What to verify before production

  • The exact Claude model and Bedrock endpoint support the required inference mode in Mumbai.
  • The model ID or profile you invoke cannot route to a Region outside your permitted boundary.
  • The model’s current abuse-detection retention terms and any applicable human-review conditions are acceptable.
  • API-specific storage behavior is configured as intended; the Responses API has an explicit store control.
  • Your audit process can establish the actual processing Region when cross-Region inference is enabled.

AWS model availability, profile destinations, retention policies and API defaults are configuration facts that can change. Confirm the current model card, profile and account settings before approving a production deployment.
