To change your router’s channel width, sign in to its app or web management page, open Wi-Fi or Wireless settings, select the band you want to adjust, change Channel Width or Channel Bandwidth if the option is available, then save or apply. The exact path and choices depend on your router model and firmware. For a practical starting point, use 20 MHz on 2.4 GHz; on 5 or 6 GHz, Auto or all supported widths generally preserves compatibility. Test performance and stability before and after changing a setting.
What channel width changes—and what it does not
Channel width is the amount of radio spectrum a Wi-Fi connection can use. Wider channels can carry more data under suitable conditions, but they are more susceptible to interference and may affect nearby devices. Apple summarizes the trade-off in its Wi-Fi router and access point settings: “Wider channels are faster but more susceptible to interference, and also more likely to interfere with other devices.”
The width is a router setting, often configurable separately for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz. It is not the same as the connection width a particular client device actually negotiates. A router setting cannot make an unsupported phone, laptop, or IoT device use a width it does not support, nor can it overcome weak signal, walls, or congestion by itself.
Channel selection and channel width are related but distinct settings: channel selection chooses where the network operates within a band; width determines how much spectrum it uses. Changing one does not necessarily change the other.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before changing the setting
- Identify the router or mesh system’s exact brand and model from its label, app, or management page. If your internet provider supplied the gateway, use its model-specific instructions.
- Connect to your Wi-Fi network and use the manufacturer’s app or management page documented for that model. There is no universal login address or set of credentials.
- Decide which band needs adjustment. Many routers provide separate controls for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz, but some interfaces combine networks or hide advanced options behind Smart Connect or band steering.
- If you are troubleshooting, record a baseline first: run several speed tests in the rooms and on the devices that matter, and note any disconnects or slowdowns. A speed test is only one measure of performance.
Find and change channel width
- Open the router’s settings. Sign in through the manufacturer’s app or web interface using the instructions for the exact model.
- Open Wi-Fi or Wireless settings. Look for an advanced setting called “Channel Width,” “Channel Bandwidth,” or similar. Select the band—2.4, 5, or 6 GHz—before choosing a width if the interface provides separate controls.
- Choose a width appropriate to the band and goal. Use the guidance below as a starting point; available values depend on the router, firmware, client support, and local rules.
- Save or apply the change. Some interfaces apply changes immediately. Wi-Fi clients may briefly reconnect, but behavior varies by router; check its documentation if you need to avoid an interruption.
- Verify and compare. If the interface offers a confirmation view, check that the selected setting appears. Repeat your baseline tests in the same locations and compare both speed and reliability.
Which width should you choose?
| Band | Starting point | When to try a different setting |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | 20 MHz is the conservative choice for crowded or unreliable environments. Apple recommends 20 MHz for this band. | 40 MHz can offer more throughput, but may aggravate interference or cause problems with older adapters and drivers. Microsoft suggests trying 20 MHz when reliability remains poor despite a strong signal and a clear channel. |
| 5 GHz | Auto or all supported widths is Apple’s general recommendation for balancing performance and compatibility. | If you are investigating interference, stability, or a client compatibility issue, compare the available settings and measure the result rather than assuming the widest option is best. |
| 6 GHz | Auto or all supported widths is Apple’s general recommendation where the router exposes this band. | Options depend on the router, supported devices, firmware, and local rules. Compare performance and stability after any adjustment. |
These recommendations serve different purposes rather than contradicting one another: 20 MHz is a conservative 2.4 GHz choice, while trying it can also be a diagnostic step when a connection is unreliable. Wider widths are not a guaranteed speed upgrade in a real home.

ASUS routers
ASUS documents the web GUI path as Wireless > General. Select the desired frequency band, set its bandwidth, then click Apply. ASUS says the router app does not expose this adjustment in the cited instructions. Its support page lists widths up to 320 MHz for Wi-Fi 7, but the options available to an individual router depend on its capabilities and local restrictions. See ASUS: How to set up the bandwidth in wireless router?
TP-Link routers
For many TP-Link router models, the documented web path is Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings. Compatible models may also offer app controls. TP-Link notes that settings and paths vary by model; consult the support page for your exact router: How to change wireless settings of TP-Link wireless router.

TP-Link Deco mesh
For the Deco BE85 example in TP-Link’s guide, connect your phone to the Deco Wi-Fi network, then open Deco app > More > Wi-Fi Settings > 2.4G & 5G Wireless Network > Advanced. Choose 2.4 or 5 GHz, adjust the width, tap Apply, then return to confirm the setting. The guide was updated June 10, 2026; feature availability varies by model and software. See How to Change Wi-Fi Settings of Deco.
Why you might not see the option
- The router does not support that width or band. Options differ by Wi-Fi generation and model. Vendor capability tables describe supported standards, not a guarantee that every router or region exposes every width.
- The app or firmware hides the control. Check the exact model’s manual or support page, and see whether a firmware update or web interface is required.
- Regional rules constrain the available choices. ASUS notes that supported channels vary under local law; permitted options can therefore differ by location.
- The interface combines bands or uses automatic management. Smart Connect or band steering may hide controls, combine network names, or still leave separate width settings. The behavior is model-specific.
- The client does not support the configured width. A router setting does not guarantee that each connected device can use it. Older clients may be particularly sensitive to 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz.
For context, ASUS’s vendor-published standards table lists 20 and 40 MHz for 802.11n (Wi-Fi 4); 20, 40, and 80 MHz for 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5); up to 160 MHz for 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E); and up to 320 MHz for 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7). These are capability figures, not promises about a particular router or region. See the ASUS bandwidth guide.

If the change does not help
- Recheck that you changed the intended band and that the router saved the setting.
- Repeat tests from the same locations and on the same devices. Compare stability as well as speed; one speed-test result cannot establish whether the change improved everyday use.
- If 2.4 GHz remains unreliable with a strong signal and a clear channel, try 20 MHz if you were using 40 MHz. Microsoft notes that some older adapters and drivers do not work well with 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz. See Microsoft: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.
- If you are also investigating congestion, a Wi-Fi network analyzer can help inspect nearby networks and channel use; it is optional, and no particular app is required.
- If the setting is missing or has no apparent effect, check the exact model’s documentation, firmware, supported bands and widths, and regional limitations.
Microsoft’s guidance also describes 2.4 GHz widths as 20 and 40 MHz, with 40 MHz introduced in IEEE 802.11n. Those technical options do not predict how much faster a particular home connection will be.
