The most useful checks are whether the drive is in a Gen 5-capable M.2 slot, what PCIe link it negotiates, how hot it gets under load, and whether you are comparing the same kind of workload the specification describes.
Start by noting the exact SSD model and capacity. Then check the motherboard manual, inspect the link under load with a system utility, run a repeatable sequential benchmark, and monitor drive temperature during a sustained run. These checks help separate a host or slot limit from heat or a simple mismatch between a peak benchmark and real-world work.
Check these things first
- Identify the exact SSD model and capacity. Advertised performance and write behavior can differ among models and capacities, so use the specification for the drive you actually own.
- Check the motherboard manual for the M.2 slot. Confirm its PCIe generation and lane width, and look for notes about shared resources or restrictions. M.2 sockets on the same board may not have identical capabilities. SanDisk advises confirming that the host supports PCIe Gen 5 NVMe M.2 and checking motherboard compatibility information in its WD_BLACK SN8100 performance troubleshooting guidance.
- Inspect the negotiated PCIe link while the SSD is active. Use an appropriate system utility to check the current generation and lane width. The utility and BIOS labels vary by system, so there is no universal menu path to follow.
- Compare like with like. Run a repeatable sequential benchmark and compare its sequential-read or sequential-write result with the matching manufacturer specification. Record the test conditions and drive temperature.
- Separate a short benchmark from a long write or file copy. A brief peak test, sustained transfer, and copy between drives are different workloads; a lower result in one does not by itself show that the SSD is faulty.
Test configuration can matter: a published Samsung 9100 Pro review reported a lower initial sequential-read result that changed after testing on different hardware (Tom’s Hardware’s review).
Why a PCIe 5.0 SSD can fall short
The M.2 slot or host limits the link
The drive can only use the connection the host and installed slot provide. A PCIe 5.0 SSD in a slower-generation slot cannot deliver the link capacity of a suitable Gen 5 connection. Even boards with multiple M.2 sockets can assign different generations, lane widths, or shared resources to each one. SanDisk’s Gen 5 solution brief likewise notes that motherboard slots may differ in generation support.

The PCIe bandwidth figure is not an SSD speed promise
PCIe bandwidth describes the link’s theoretical transport capacity, not the speed a drive must produce in a benchmark. Intel explains that stated PCIe rates are theoretical before encoding overhead and that realized speeds may be lower (Intel’s PCIe 5.0 explainer). Keep units consistent when comparing results: GB/s and MB/s differ by a factor of 1,000 in decimal units. Compare sequential read with sequential read, not random IOPS or a file-copy rate.
Heat can reduce sustained performance
An NVMe SSD may temporarily reduce performance when it gets hot, then recover as it cools. Seagate describes this behavior in its thermal-throttling guidance. Check the temperature reported for the exact drive during the same workload that produces the slowdown, then inspect airflow and whether the heatsink and thermal pad make proper contact.

Do not assume an installed motherboard heatsink is making good contact. In a 2026 test of 20 motherboard heatsinks, Tom’s Hardware reported full contact on 6 (test results). This finding is not a prediction for every board. There is also no single temperature threshold that can be applied to all SSD models; consult the drive’s documentation rather than treating one generic number as decisive.
A long write may not match a peak specification
A short sequential-write result does not establish that the SSD will sustain that rate for an entire long transfer. Some drives’ write-cache behavior affects longer writes, but the cache and speed after it fills depend on the particular model, capacity, firmware, available space, and test conditions. Check the exact drive’s documentation or a controlled test for those details; there is no universal PCIe 5.0 post-cache speed or cache size.

A benchmark and a file copy measure different paths
Benchmark results depend on factors such as test size, queue and thread settings, drive state, cooling, and whether the test is sequential or random. A real file copy also depends on the source drive, destination drive, file mix, filesystem, and operating system. Its transfer rate is therefore not a direct measurement of the SSD’s peak sequential speed.
How to tell which explanation fits your result
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Sequential results are consistently well below the drive’s specification. | Confirm the exact M.2 slot’s generation and lane width in the board manual, then inspect the negotiated link under load. |
| A short test looks normal, but performance drops during a sustained workload as temperature rises. | Measure temperature during that workload and inspect heatsink contact, thermal-pad placement, and airflow. |
| A short benchmark is fast, but a long write slows down. | Look up model- and capacity-specific write-cache behavior and compare the test duration and amount written with the drive’s documentation. |
| A benchmark looks fast, but a file copy is slower. | Check the source and destination drives, file sizes and mix, filesystem, and operating-system workload; the copy is not an SSD-only test. |
| A result changes after moving the SSD or changing test hardware. | Recheck slot capabilities, link status, cooling, and whether the repeated benchmark uses the same conditions. |
Only consider a compatible M.2 heatsink if temperature measurements point to cooling as the limitation and the current cooling solution is missing or poorly fitted. Before buying one, check whether the motherboard already has a heatsink, the SSD’s dimensions, and whether the pad and cover will fit and make contact. A heatsink is not a guaranteed speed upgrade.

When to suspect a drive problem
Do not conclude that the SSD is defective from one low file-copy rate or a benchmark that does not match the manufacturer’s test category. First verify slot and link capability, use a repeatable test, and check temperature under load. If the result remains unexpectedly low under comparable conditions, consult the SSD maker’s model-specific troubleshooting and warranty guidance with the model, capacity, firmware, operating system, benchmark settings, link status, and recorded temperature. Without those details, there is no reliable way to identify one cause for an individual system.
