On desktop and Android, you can remove cached files without selecting cookies. It is a targeted troubleshooting step—not a guaranteed way to make Firefox faster.
What clearing Firefox’s cache does
Firefox temporarily saves parts of websites—such as images and scripts—so it can reuse them on later visits. If saved files no longer match a site’s current version, clearing the cache can make Firefox fetch fresh copies. Mozilla describes the cache as a way to speed up repeat visits, but does not promise that clearing it will improve overall browser speed. Mozilla’s cache guide was updated June 13, 2026.
Cache, cookies, and other site data are separate categories. Cookies and site data can hold login state and preferences, so select only cached files when you want to preserve them.
Clear cache on Firefox for desktop without deleting cookies
- Open Firefox’s menu and choose Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Under Cookies and Site Data or the corresponding browsing-data section, choose Clear Data or Clear browsing data. Firefox’s wording may vary by version.
- Set the time range to Everything if you want to remove all cached files.
- Select only Temporary cached files and pages. Leave cookies and other categories unselected.
- Click Clear.
Another route is History > Clear Recent History. Choose Everything, select only Temporary cached files and pages, and clear the data. These desktop steps follow Mozilla’s instructions for clearing the Firefox cache.

Clear cache on Firefox for Android
- Tap the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Under Privacy and security, tap Delete browsing data.
- Select Cached images and files.
- Check the other categories before proceeding, and deselect anything you do not intend to remove.
- Tap Delete browsing data.
The dialog may include open tabs, browsing history and site data, cookies and site data, site permissions, and downloads. Select only the cached files if that is all you want to delete. Mozilla documents this flow in its Firefox for Android browsing-history guide, updated September 12, 2023.
What you can clear on Firefox for iPhone and iPad
Mozilla’s iOS instructions provide controls to clear data for a selected site or to clear all website data; they do not describe the all-data control as cache-only. To remove data for one site, open the menu and go to Settings > Data Management > Website Data, select the site, and clear its items. To remove all website data, use Clear Private Data at the bottom of Data Management. Treat the latter as a broader deletion, not as an equivalent to desktop cache-only clearing.

Mozilla defines cache as parts of web pages kept in the browser to help them load faster next time. Its Firefox for iOS guide, updated April 8, 2024, does not establish that Clear Private Data removes only cached content.
Choose the clearing option that fits the problem

Clear cache automatically when Firefox closes
On desktop, Firefox can clear selected history data when it closes. In Settings > Privacy & Security, configure Firefox to clear history when it closes, open the associated settings, and select only Temporary cached files and pages. This is optional; routine automatic clearing is not required for ordinary browsing.

On Android, the Delete browsing data on quit option lets you choose which data types are removed when you exit using Firefox’s Quit option. Check the selected categories so you do not delete more than intended.

A page that looks wrong or fails to load may be affected by stale cached files, but Mozilla also lists extensions, browser settings, and blocked content as possible causes. For a problem limited to one site, Mozilla recommends clearing that site’s cookies and site data through the site controls. This is broader than a cache-only cleanup and may sign you out or remove site preferences. See Mozilla’s guide to websites that look wrong.

For broader loading problems, Mozilla’s troubleshooting sequence includes clearing cookies and cached web content, then restarting Firefox. If the issue remains, try Troubleshoot Mode to check whether extensions, themes, or hardware acceleration are involved, and continue with Mozilla’s other diagnostics in its Firefox troubleshooting guide, updated September 19, 2025.
Do not confuse the website cache with Firefox’s startup cache. The startup cache concerns startup and interface troubleshooting; Mozilla says clearing it does not change profile data or add-ons. It is a separate diagnostic, not the same action as removing cached website files.
