The right choice is the system that reduces physical capacity for your actual workload without pushing total cost of ownership (TCO) up through performance penalties, extra operating effort, or service charges. Compare candidates using the same workload, efficiency definitions, capacity assumptions, and ownership period—not a headline reduction ratio.
Start with the workload, not the advertised ratio
Compression and deduplication can reduce the physical capacity needed for some data, but results depend on what you store and how it is written. Repeated or compressible data may benefit substantially; already-compressed images, audio, and video generally offer less opportunity for further compression. Compression can also consume compute resources and affect performance. ENERGY STAR’s storage guidance describes these trade-offs.
Before comparing systems, describe the intended workload: logical data volume and growth, read and write patterns, active versus infrequently accessed data, duplicate content, retention, and recovery needs. Use representative data and a representative workload profile. Vendor examples can help frame expectations, but cannot establish what your environment will achieve.
Understand what each efficiency feature does
Compression
Compression stores information using fewer bits. Its benefit depends on the data format and content; media that is already compressed may yield little additional reduction. Consider performance and compute overhead alongside capacity savings.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Deduplication
Deduplication detects repeated data and avoids storing duplicate blocks. Savings vary with the amount of repetition and the implementation. For example, AWS says FSx for ONTAP processes incoming writes for deduplication in 4 KiB units and warns that savings may be lower when a workload uses writes smaller than 4 KiB. See AWS’s FSx for ONTAP storage-efficiency documentation.
Compaction, thin provisioning, and snapshots
Compaction reorganizes data to use disk space more effectively. Thin provisioning allocates physical capacity as data is written rather than reserving all logical capacity up front; snapshots may share underlying blocks. These mechanisms affect space accounting differently, so determine whether a vendor’s reported figure includes them. AWS lists compression, compaction, and deduplication among FSx for ONTAP volume-efficiency features in its capacity documentation.

Tiering
Tiering places data on storage suited to its access frequency and performance needs. Infrequently accessed data may fit a lower-cost, lower-performance tier, while active data needs faster capacity. AWS describes capacity-pool tiering for FSx for ONTAP; SSD sizing depends on active data, target utilization, and system overhead. Account for retrieval behavior and charges where relevant, not just the capacity price. ENERGY STAR also discusses assigning infrequently accessed data to lower-cost media.
Make data-reduction ratios comparable
A ratio is useful only when its scope and denominator are clear. One vendor may report compression and deduplication alone; another may add thin provisioning, snapshots, RAID, compaction, or other effects under a broad “total efficiency” label. Align logical and physical capacity definitions, included mechanisms, and measurement periods before comparing figures.

Published figures are examples, not promises
| Published figure | Scope and interpretation |
|---|---|
| 50% compression-only, 30% deduplication-only, and 65% combined typical storage savings | AWS’s FSx for ONTAP capacity documentation gives these examples for general-purpose file shares. AWS says the features can save up to 65% in storage capacity for general file shares without sacrificing performance. This is a vendor-published workload example, not a guarantee for every dataset; publication year is not stated in the documentation. AWS source. |
| 5.4:1 for PowerStore; 1.7:1 to 4.2:1 for five competing solutions | A 2025 Principled Technologies report hosted by Dell describes results from a test dataset with a 2:1 compression and 2:1 deduplication profile. Compare full lifecycle cost, not capacity alone
For each shortlisted system, estimate the same workload over the same ownership period. First estimate logical data by workload, then calculate the physical capacity required after applying only mechanisms supported by evidence for that workload. Keep data reduction, capacity utilization, and usable capacity distinct unless the vendor documents exactly how they are combined.
- Acquisition and recurring charges: include hardware or service costs, support, licensing, and any capacity-pool or cloud charges.
- Capacity and expansion: compare usable physical capacity after overhead, target utilization, and expected growth—not raw or advertised capacity alone.
- Performance: account for latency and throughput under the intended read/write mix, including the effects of efficiency processing and headroom required to meet service needs.
- Power and cooling: include the operating cost of the storage system and any associated infrastructure.
- Operations and resilience: include staff effort, administration complexity, availability, retention, and recovery requirements.
- Tiering consequences: model access patterns, retrieval needs, and any applicable cloud or tier charges.
Use observed telemetry after deployment to revisit the estimate; an initial model cannot substitute for measured results on the deployed data and configuration.

Quick Recap
Use a consistent shortlist process
- Profile the data. Document workload sizes, growth, access frequency, read/write patterns, duplicate rate, compressibility, retention, and recovery needs.
- Request the ratio definition. Ask vendors to identify included features, logical and physical capacity denominators, measurement period, and whether the result is a guarantee, estimate, or test.
- Validate on representative data. Where feasible, measure the intended workload and configuration; do not treat a vendor example or unrelated benchmark as your result.
- Model lifecycle cost. Add capacity, acquisition, support, licensing, power, cooling, operational effort, performance headroom, and tier or cloud charges for the same time horizon.
- Check remedies and constraints. Review availability, recovery, expansion, support terms, vendor guarantees, and the remedy if a promised efficiency level is not met.
