If a newly installed PC game will not open, first note any error, restart Windows, and work through the checks below in order: compare your PC with the game’s requirements, update Windows and graphics drivers, verify the game files in its launcher, then investigate security blocks or software conflicts. Use a runtime installer only when the error points to one. The cause is not always obvious: an apparent failure to launch can be a crash that happens immediately.
1. Record what happens, then restart Windows
Before changing anything, note the exact error message and what the launcher does when you click Play. Does its status briefly change? Does a game process appear and then close? If an error is shown, save an uncropped screenshot so its wording is readable.
Restart Windows, then try launching the game once more. Steam recommends starting its general launch troubleshooting after a fresh restart. A restart may clear a temporary problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
2. Check that your PC meets the game’s requirements
Find the requirements for the exact game and compare them with your PC’s Windows version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage. For a Steam game, check its store page; other launchers and publishers may provide their own requirements. Capcom notes that a system below a game’s minimum requirements may not run it.

If your PC meets the listed requirements, install pending Windows updates and current graphics drivers from Windows Update or your graphics-card manufacturer. Restart if an installer requests it, then try the game again. Don’t buy hardware based on a launch failure alone: first confirm a requirements mismatch or get a diagnosis.
3. Verify the game files through its launcher
A missing or damaged installation file can prevent a game from starting. Use the launcher’s built-in verify or repair option before deleting files or reinstalling. Steam says its integrity check looks for game files that are not installed correctly; Rockstar also recommends file verification for GTAV through its launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher. Menu names and paths vary by launcher, so look in the game’s settings, properties, or support page.

When verification finishes, let the launcher download or repair any files it reports, then try launching the game again.
4. Investigate a missing-file warning or software conflict
If the message says “Missing Executable”
Check your antivirus or other security software’s history for a quarantined file associated with the game. Steam identifies quarantine as a common cause of this specific error; an incomplete or corrupted download can also leave a file missing. If you can confirm the file belongs to the legitimate game installation and the detection is a false positive, follow the security software’s instructions to restore or allow it, then verify the game files again.

Do not restore a file or create an exclusion just because the game will not start. Capcom’s advice to add game files to security exclusions is guidance for its games, not a blanket rule for every title. Confirm the game’s source and the detection before changing protection settings.
If there is no specific missing-file warning
Close nonessential background utilities and try again. A background program can conflict with a game, but the symptom alone does not identify which one. Avoid routinely disabling antivirus or other protection. If the game publisher explicitly recommends a temporary security-software test, use it only for that diagnostic test and turn protection back on promptly.

5. Use the error message to decide whether a runtime is involved
If the error specifically names DirectX, Direct3D, or Microsoft Visual C++, treat that as a clue to investigate the named runtime. Some games include redistributable installers in their installation folders; Rockstar points GTAV players to its bundled DirectX and Visual C++ redistributables for relevant errors. Follow the instructions for your game rather than assuming that every launch failure needs a runtime reinstall.
For Visual C++, use an installer downloaded from Microsoft and check that it is Microsoft-signed. Avoid third-party “all-in-one” runtime bundles, and do not delete system DLLs. Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable guidance provides the official download information.

6. Contact the right support team with useful details
If the checks above do not resolve the problem, contact the game’s publisher for a game-specific error or the platform’s support team for a launcher, account, or download issue. Steam advises contacting the game developer when its general launch guidance does not help.
Include information that helps support distinguish an installation problem from a system-specific one:
- Game title and version, and the launcher you use.
- The exact error message and a readable screenshot.
- Your Windows version, processor, graphics hardware, memory, and graphics-driver version.
- Which checks you tried and what happened after each one.
- Logs or diagnostic files requested by the game’s support page. Capcom may request DxDiag and system details; Rockstar identifies launcher logs and DxDiag or MSInfo for GTAV.
If publisher and platform support cannot resolve an issue tied to your individual PC configuration, Steam notes that a local PC technician may be useful.
