There is no single iPhone setting that uses the most battery on every phone. To find what is draining yours, open Settings > Battery and review the apps and system activity listed there. Then make a targeted, reversible change—often to brightness, background activity, notifications, or connectivity—rather than switching off features indiscriminately.
How do I check iPhone battery usage by app?
Open Settings > Battery. In iOS 26, the Battery screen shows Daily Usage and app and system activity. Daily Usage compares the current day with the previous seven days and highlights the three apps or system activities contributing most when usage is similar to or higher than usual.
- Review the Battery screen for apps or system activity that stands out.
- Tap View All Battery Usage to inspect a different day.
- Tap an app to see more detail about its activity and battery use.
Look at the type of activity, not just the app name. Apple’s breakdown may indicate that use was on-screen, in the background, associated with cellular coverage, or triggered by notifications. A prominent app is a clue to investigate, not proof that its setting should be disabled.
Which iPhone settings and activities can use the most battery?
Screen brightness and time before Auto-Lock
A bright display uses energy, and leaving the screen on while the phone is idle adds unnecessary screen time. If Battery offers a display suggestion, consider turning on Auto-Brightness or Auto-Lock. Lower brightness to a level that remains comfortable to read and use.

Background app activity
Some apps continue working when they are not on screen. Apple gives examples such as music playback and location tracking; its iPhone guide also lists directions, photo syncing, and fetching mail. If one app has substantial background activity in Battery, adjust that app or the activity responsible. Limiting background work can delay updates.
Weak cellular coverage
When cellular service is weak or unavailable, iPhone may search for a signal, affecting battery life. Use Wi‑Fi when practical and seek stronger coverage when possible. On iPhone 12 and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation), 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. If you know you will be somewhere without coverage and do not need connectivity, Airplane Mode can stop the phone searching for service.

Notifications
Notifications can wake the device. Reduce alerts for apps whose notifications do not need to reach you immediately, especially if Battery activity points to notifications as a contributor.
What can I safely change to save iPhone battery?
Start with the setting that matches the activity shown on your Battery screen. Keep the change only if it helps without making the phone inconvenient to use.

Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode is a built-in, reversible way to reduce power use. Depending on the iPhone and software, it can reduce brightness, set Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, limit refresh rate on ProMotion displays, turn off some visual effects, temporarily pause iCloud Photos, and stop automatic downloads, email fetch, and Background App Refresh. It turns off when charge reaches 80% or higher. Expect some background content to update less frequently while the mode is active.
Adaptive Power
On supported models with iOS 26 or later, Adaptive Power can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode at 20%. Apple says it needs at least seven days to learn charging habits before it engages. Availability and whether it is on by default vary by model, so check Settings > Battery > Power Mode rather than assuming your iPhone has it.

What if battery life got worse after an iOS update?
After an update, background tasks may continue for a while and affect battery life and thermal performance. Apple advises waiting a few days, then checking Battery again to see whether the change persists.
When is battery drain a battery-health issue?
Settings are not the only factor: battery capacity and how you use the phone also affect battery life. Check the health screen under Settings > Battery. On iPhone 15 and later it is named Battery Health; on iPhone 14 and earlier it is Battery Health & Charging.
