To check paddy seed before planting, take a representative sample from the seed lot, count a measured batch, keep it moist while it germinates, then calculate the percentage that sprouted. A paper-towel test gives a practical estimate; a separate soil test provides a closer check of likely establishment.
How to sample paddy seed so the result is representative
A test is only useful if its seeds reflect the lot. Taking a handful from the top of one bag can miss differences between bags or within a container.
- Take small portions from different parts of each container or bag. If the lot contains multiple bags, sample more than one.
- For a lot stored in bags, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Rice Production Manual suggests sampling approximately the square root of the number of bags—for example, at least 3 bags out of 9, or 10 out of 100.
- Mix the collected seed, then take at least three separate samples of 100 seeds each for testing, following the manual’s recommendation.
Testing three batches gives you a better view of variation than relying on a single 100-seed batch. Keep each batch’s count separate so you can see whether results differ.
How to do a paper-towel germination test
IRRI’s farmer fact sheet describes a straightforward home test. You need counted seeds, absorbent paper or a clean cloth, water, and a container or cover that helps keep the material moist.

- Count 100 seeds. Use one of your representative samples. If you have taken three samples, test each batch separately.
- Soak the seeds. The IRRI fact sheet specifies soaking in water for 24 hours.
- Arrange the seeds. Place them in a grid on a wet paper towel. Cover them with another moist towel, or put the setup in a closed container.
- Keep the towel moist, not flooded. Check it during the test and add water as needed. Water should not run off; excess water can cause seeds to rot.
- Count and record sprouts. The fact sheet calls for counts on days 3 and 5. Record the number germinated and the observation day.
For a 100-seed sample, the number germinated is also the percentage: 82 germinated seeds means 82%. For a different batch size, calculate it as germinated seeds ÷ seeds tested × 100.
A longer observation schedule in another IRRI manual
IRRI’s Rice Production Manual describes a separate procedure: place 100 seeds from each of at least three samples on absorbent paper in a waterproof tray, saturate the paper carefully, and check daily that it remains moist. It records counts through day 10 and calculates both five-day and ten-day results. Do not treat this and the farmer fact sheet’s day-3-and-day-5 schedule as one standardized protocol; they are distinct guidance. In the longer procedure, faster germination is an indicator of vigor.

How many days does paddy seed take to germinate?
There is no single observation schedule across the IRRI guidance cited here. The farmer fact sheet recommends checking on days 3 and 5; the Rice Production Manual’s tray procedure follows germination through day 10 and calculates five- and ten-day results. Use the schedule for the method you choose, and note the day alongside each count so you do not compare unlike results.
What germination percentage is good for rice seed?
IRRI’s farmer fact sheet says seed should have at least 80% germination to be considered good. Separately, IRRI’s Rice Production Manual gives 85–90% germination in 10 days as the figure for good-quality seed. These are benchmarks from different guidance and procedures, not a single universal legal threshold. Local certification rules, seed class, and planting system may set a different requirement.

For example, the Government of India’s Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority lists rice germination values in the context of seed or planting-material submissions for distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) testing. That table is specific to that submission purpose, not a general threshold for every grower.
Paper germination versus field establishment
A seed that germinates on paper does not necessarily emerge in a field. IRRI notes that field emergence can be 70% or less of the germination result, so a paper test should not be read as a prediction that every sprouted seed will establish.

For a more field-like check, IRRI’s farmer fact sheet recommends a soil test:
- Fill a tray with soil and prepare two separate samples of 100 seeds.
- Sow the seeds and cover them lightly with about 5 mm of soil.
- Keep the soil moist.
- Count established seedlings after seven days.
IRRI notes that larger seeds may establish better than smaller seeds. The soil check therefore adds useful information about establishment under those test conditions, but it is still not a formal field trial.

What to do if the result is low
If the home test is weak, first consider whether the sample represented all the seed you plan to plant. If it did, obtaining seed from a reliable source is one option. JICA’s rice-production manual says that if no other source is available, the seed rate can be increased in view of low germination; seek locally appropriate advice before changing the rate because recommendations depend on the planting system and local conditions.
If you need an official result, contact the relevant local seed-testing service and follow the applicable rules. A home test is a practical estimate, not a certification test or a diagnosis of every reason seeds failed to sprout. Laboratory viability testing can help distinguish dormancy from non-viability; IRRI describes tetrazolium testing in its specialized rice genetic-resources guidance for seeds that fail to germinate.
