Before buying a Windows on Arm laptop, confirm that your required apps, add-ins, drivers, peripherals, and school or employer management tools work on the exact device and Windows version you plan to use. Windows 11 on Arm can run many x86 and x64 apps through emulation, but emulation does not make incompatible drivers or kernel-level components work.
Can you run your required Windows apps?
Often, yes. Windows 11 on Arm supports x86 and x64 apps through emulation, and Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism, Microsoft’s newer emulation technology. That broadens the range of apps that can run, but it is not a guarantee that every app or every feature will work. Emulation covers user-mode code; drivers and kernel-mode components must support Arm64.
For each essential program, check the publisher’s current Windows on Arm guidance and confirm the exact app version, add-ins, licensing, and dependencies. Microsoft maintains a Windows on Arm documentation and compatibility resource; also ask your school’s or employer’s IT team about software they deploy or manage.
Make an inventory before you shop
List the programs and components you rely on, not just the names of your main apps. Include:

- Specialist work or school software, including any required versions and license method.
- Office add-ins, macros, browser extensions, and other plug-ins needed for daily tasks.
- VPN, endpoint security, accessibility, virtualization, and device-management software.
- Any workflow that connects an app to a scanner, printer, smart card, or other device.
An app may open under emulation but still fail when it tries to use an unsupported plug-in, driver, or security component. If the laptop will be organization-managed, ask IT to confirm the complete setup and test essential workflows on the device before relying on it for classes or work.
Are the drivers and peripherals supported?
Drivers need a separate check from application compatibility. Microsoft states: “In all cases, kernel-mode drivers and user-mode print drivers MUST be built as native Arm64 binaries to work on Arm64 devices.” See Microsoft’s Windows on Arm support FAQ for driver guidance.
List every peripheral or specialized device you need, then check whether its functions are supported by drivers built into Windows or by an Arm64 driver from its manufacturer. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ says Windows 11 Arm supports most printers, including printers using Mopria. Still, confirm the specific printer and the features you need: advanced functions may depend on a separate installer or companion app.

- Check printers and scanners, including model-specific software and advanced features.
- Check specialized equipment, docks, and accessories if they require a driver or management utility.
- Ask whether the device works through built-in Windows support or requires an Arm64 driver.
How will the laptop perform and how long will its battery last?
When available, a native Arm64 version is generally the preferred way to run an app. Microsoft says native apps can provide better performance and responsiveness and can be optimized for battery life. Emulated apps can add overhead; Prism improves emulated app performance compared with earlier emulation technology, but that does not establish how a particular app will perform on a particular laptop.

Look for evidence that reflects your likely use, rather than relying on one runtime figure: document editing and browser tabs place different demands on a laptop than sustained specialist software or frequent video calls. No single battery estimate applies across models and workloads.
What else should you compare between laptops?
Once you know the required software and devices are supported, compare the options against how you will actually use the laptop. Do not treat processor architecture alone as a substitute for checking the full configuration.

What should work or school buyers confirm with IT?
If a school or employer requires device management, VPN access, endpoint protection, or other security controls, ask IT whether it supports the precise laptop and the required configuration. Do this before purchase: an app that runs for an individual user may still not meet an organization’s deployment or security requirements.
For businesses encountering line-of-business application issues, Microsoft describes App Assure as a support option in its Arm-based Surface deployment and management guidance. It is a commercial support path, so organizations should verify eligibility and current terms with Microsoft rather than assume their case is covered.
