Choose a console by starting with the games you want and where you’ll play, then compare the likely first-year cost—not just the sticker price. Switch 2 is the handheld-and-TV option; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are home-console families. For U.S. buyers, official prices changed in 2026, and Microsoft’s announcement does not give exact new U.S. prices for each Xbox model, so check current local listings before deciding.

Start with your games and how you’ll play

Write down a short list of games you care about, including any household or co-op games. Then decide whether handheld play is essential or whether the console will stay by a TV. Those two questions narrow the choice more usefully than a general claim that one platform is “best.”

  • Handheld play matters: Investigate Nintendo Switch 2. It can be used as a handheld or connected to a TV through its dock.
  • You want a home console: Compare PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S based on the specific games, franchises, and services you expect to use.
  • You already own games or accessories: Check compatibility for each title and accessory before treating it as a saving.

Platform catalogs change, and availability can vary by title and region. Check the current catalog for the games on your list rather than relying on a broad franchise summary.

Compare current U.S. console prices carefully

The following are manufacturer-announced U.S. prices, not guarantees of retailer sale prices. They exclude taxes and do not establish bundle availability or stock. Prices and offers differ by country and can change.

Console or model Official U.S. price information What to keep in mind
Nintendo Switch 2 $499.99 MSRP, effective September 1, 2026; increased from $449.99. System price, not a bundle. Nintendo’s price announcement attributes the change to market conditions expected to persist over the medium to long term.
PlayStation 5 with disc drive $649.99 recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026. Compare this edition with Digital Edition if you expect to use physical games or media. Sony’s U.S. price update lists these recommended prices.
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition $599.99 recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026. That is $50 less than the standard PS5 at the announced U.S. prices; whether it saves you money overall depends on how you plan to buy games and media.
PlayStation 5 Pro $899.99 recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026. Consider this only if its particular features matter to your use; the price alone does not establish that it is the right value for you.
Xbox Series X|S Microsoft announced a worldwide price change effective August 1, 2026: a US$100 increase for 512 GB models and a US$150 increase for 1 TB models. Exact resulting U.S. MSRP by model is not stated in the opened Xbox Wire announcement. Microsoft called Series S its lowest-cost Xbox path and said it would sunset the 2 TB model. Do not infer an exact current U.S. model price from that description; check the model and region at purchase.

Use the price of the exact edition and bundle you can buy in your region. Manufacturer MSRP is a reference point, not a promise about retailer discounts or what will be in stock.

Work out the first-year cost

Use this worksheet with current local prices and your own expected purchases:

First-year estimate = hardware + games you expect to buy + membership you expect to use + necessary storage or accessories − the value of compatible games or accessories you already own.

  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

There is no universal ownership-cost total: the result depends on your game list, membership choice, existing equipment, and local prices. Avoid counting a subscription as mandatory for every game or feature; verify the requirements for the particular games and services you’ll use.

Hardware edition

For PS5, the announced U.S. MSRP difference between the disc and digital editions is $50. A disc drive is relevant if you plan to use physical games or media; compare that use with the upfront difference rather than assuming the digital edition will always cost less overall.

Games and membership

Budget for the games you actually intend to play, not an imagined library. Nintendo’s U.S. annual price table lists Switch Online at $19.99 for an individual basic membership or $34.99 for a family basic membership. Expansion Pack annual prices are $49.99 individual or $79.99 family. Nintendo notes that prices vary by country and membership length. See Nintendo Switch Online membership options for the U.S. figures. Verify current PlayStation and Xbox plan names, prices, and included games on their official pages before putting them in your comparison; this article does not establish current prices for those services.

Check whether your current games and accessories carry over

Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch software, but some games may not work or may not be fully compatible. Check the status of each title before counting an existing game as a saving; Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility and transfer guide provides the relevant details.

Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but many accessories do not carry over. The original Switch dock and standard microSD cards are not compatible; Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for storage. Check each accessory and card standard before reusing or replacing anything.

Choose the comparison that fits your situation

If portability or Nintendo games lead your list

Put Switch 2 at the top of your shortlist if handheld play is a real requirement or Nintendo’s games are central to the household. Add any non-compatible games, accessories, or storage you would need to replace to your cost estimate. Nintendo described Switch 2 as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go” in its April 2, 2025 launch announcement; that is the manufacturer’s description of the product, not an independent value assessment. Read Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch announcement.

If PlayStation games are the draw

Compare PS5 Digital Edition with the disc-drive PS5 using the games and media you actually expect to use. The $50 U.S. MSRP gap is a dated manufacturer price comparison, not a verdict that one edition is cheaper to own for every buyer.

If Xbox games or Game Pass interest you

Compare Series S and Series X against your Xbox game list and the current plan terms you would use. A Best Buy guide describes Series X as having a 4K Blu-ray disc drive and Series S as a smaller digital-only model, but this is secondary context; verify exact current model features with Microsoft before buying. Its overview of Xbox franchises and Game Pass is not a substitute for checking the live catalog. See Best Buy’s Xbox overview.

If your budget has a firm ceiling

Set a maximum first-year spend, then total the exact console, games, membership, and necessary accessories you expect to buy. Recheck local prices on the day you purchase and leave out items without a clear use case.

Make the final decision with a short checklist

  1. List must-play games. Check that they are available for the model and region you’re considering.
  2. Choose the form factor. Decide whether handheld play is essential or a TV-based console fits your use.
  3. Select the exact edition. Compare disc and digital options using your plans for physical games and media.
  4. Check what carries over. Verify every existing game, controller, accessory, and storage device you hope to reuse.
  5. Estimate the first year. Add hardware, likely game purchases, any membership you will use, and necessary add-ons; subtract only the value of compatible items you already own.
  6. Confirm current local pricing. Check the exact model, edition, bundle, taxes, and availability before purchase.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
