For haze dominated by fine particles, a properly fitting, NIOSH-approved N95 respirator offers better particle protection than a loose-fitting surgical mask. A surgical mask is not designed to seal to your face or filter smoke particles the way a particulate respirator does. But an N95 does not filter harmful gases or vapors, so it is not protection from every component of haze or wildfire smoke.
How N95 respirators and surgical masks compare for haze
| Factor | NIOSH-approved N95 respirator | Surgical mask |
|---|---|---|
| Intended protection | Particulate respirator designed to filter particles, including fine smoke particles, when correctly worn and fitted. | Loose-fitting face covering; not designed to seal to the face or use the type of filter material that filters smoke particles. CDC/NIOSH says it may provide limited or no protection from very small airborne particles. |
| Fit and leakage | A tight seal helps direct inhaled air through the filter. Gaps can let unfiltered air in, and fit varies by face and model. | Does not seal to the face, so air can enter around the edges. |
| Gases and vapors | Does not filter harmful gases or vapors and does not supply oxygen. | Does not provide the particulate-respirator protection described for an N95. |
EPA states that NIOSH-approved N95 filters are more than 95% efficient at removing wildfire-smoke particles in the PM2.5 size fraction. That is a filter-efficiency figure, not a promise that a wearer’s total exposure or health risk will fall by the same percentage. Real-world protection depends on fit and use as well as the filter.
For the underlying distinction, CDC/NIOSH explains that surgical masks are not designed to seal to the face or filter smoke particles. WHO also notes that evidence on real-world public use is limited, with small studies and inadequate information about fit; a reliable general-public health-benefit percentage is not established.
Choose and wear an N95 so it can seal
Look for a particulate respirator tested and approved by NIOSH. EPA advises checking for “NIOSH” and “N95” or “P100” markings. WHO cautions that labels alone may be used without proper testing, so approval by a recognized authority matters.

#1 Best Overall
- NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
- 3M COOL FLOW EXHALATION VALVE helps direct exhaled air downward and allows for easy breathing
- UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING. Compared to non-valved 3M 8200 Testing
- ADVANCED FILTER MEDIA for easy breathing
- ADJUSTABLE M-NOSECLIP helps provide a custom and secure seal
- Choose a model and size that fits your face. It should cover your nose and sit under your chin. A model that seals for one person may not fit another.
- Put it on according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Position the straps as directed, typically one above and one below the ears, and press the nosepiece with both hands if the respirator has one.
- Check the seal every time you put it on. If air leaks around the edges, adjust it or try another size or model. Facial hair where the respirator contacts the skin can prevent a good seal.
- Replace it when it is dirty or harder to breathe through.
EPA’s outdoor smoke-exposure guidance recommends a two-strap, NIOSH-approved particulate respirator when you must be outside. A respirator only helps as intended when you can wear it correctly and consistently.
Reduce exposure before relying on a respirator
When smoke or haze is present, limiting time outdoors is the most effective way to reduce wildfire-smoke exposure. If you need to go out, reduce strenuous activity and consider a properly fitting NIOSH-approved respirator for particle exposure. Indoor measures, including using a portable air cleaner, can also help reduce exposure.
Rank #2
- NIOSH-APPROVED: Organic Vapor/P100 combination cartridge helps reduce expose to certain organic vapors and provides at least 99.97% filtration efficiency against solids, liquid aerosols, and oil-based particulate
- OIL-PROOF FILTERS: Included P100 particulate filters are oil-proof (Use according to manufacturer’s time use restrictions when oil aerosols are present)
- USE FOR: Relief from certain non-harmful particles and annoying odors
- KIT INCLUDES: One facepiece and one pair of replaceable organic vapor/P100 combination cartridges (#60921)
- 3M BAYONET CONNECTION: Makes it compatible with a wide range of 3M cartridges and filters
Use the Air Quality Index (AQI) to guide decisions about outdoor activity and smoke exposure. EPA’s guidance covers reducing exposure if you need to be outside or travel in a vehicle; follow local air-quality advice, which can vary by location and change with conditions.
Comfort, health conditions, and children
Respirators can make breathing harder and may contribute to heat-related illness, particularly in hot weather or during physical activity. Take breaks and drink water. If you have heart or lung problems, or are pregnant, EPA advises consulting a clinician before using a respirator.

- NIOSH APPROVED: For at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil based particles
- COMPATIBLE: With a variety of protective eyewear and hearing protection
- ADJUSTABLE NOSECLIP: Reduces potential for eyewear fogging and helps provide a custom and secure seal
- TWO-STRAP DESIGN: With welded dual point attachement that helps provide a secure fit
- APPLICATIONS: Gringing, sanding, sweeping, bagging, and other dusty operations. Metalworking, chemical processing, construction, and metal processing
If wearing a respirator causes difficulty breathing, dizziness, or other symptoms, move to cleaner air and remove it. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or are severe.
CDC says children age two and older can wear respirators, but EPA notes NIOSH-approved models are not available in sizes suitable for young children. Do not assume an adult model will fit. Consider whether the respirator fits securely and comfortably, allows clear vision, and can be worn correctly by the child.

- NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
- USE FOR: Sanding, drywall cutting, sweeping, sawing, woodworking, fiberglass insulating, yard work, grinding and dusting

What an N95 does not protect against
An N95 is a particulate respirator: it filters particles, not harmful gases or vapors, and it does not supply oxygen. Haze and wildfire smoke can contain a mixture of pollutants, so an N95 should not be described as protection from every smoke component. If air quality is unhealthy, reducing exposure and following local public-health guidance remain important even when you wear one.
