There is no single design for a quantum computer. Different machines use different physical systems to store quantum bits (qubits), control them and measure their states. The main approaches covered here are superconducting circuits and trapped ions; neutral atoms and spin qubits are also active approaches, while photonic integrated circuits are being developed as components for ion-trap systems. Each has distinct engineering needs, and none can be named the best hardware for every task on the evidence available here.
What makes quantum hardware different?
A qubit is the physical system used to represent quantum information. In one processor it may be a fabricated superconducting circuit; in another, an ion held in a trap. That physical choice shapes how the machine performs operations, reads results and is engineered to scale.
A useful comparison separates the qubit itself from the rest of the system. A quantum processor also depends on control signals, measurement hardware, environmental equipment and classical computing. IBM, for example, describes its superconducting systems as integrating the processor with cryogenic engineering, control electronics, runtime servers and classical workflows. The processor’s qubit count alone does not describe the full machine or establish fault-tolerant performance.
How the main hardware approaches compare
| Approach | What stores the qubit | Control and readout | Operating environment | Connectivity and scaling evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superconducting circuits | Fabricated superconducting quantum circuits. | IBM describes microwave signal paths, readout amplification and modular control electronics in its systems. | IBM describes cooling its cited processors to around one hundredth of a degree above absolute zero, with magnetic shielding. These details describe IBM systems, not every superconducting implementation. | IBM describes modular systems and cryogenic infrastructure. Its cited 2026 control demonstration reports a specific two-qubit error metric; that result does not establish a cross-platform ranking. |
| Trapped ions | Ionized atoms confined in three dimensions by electromagnetic forces. | IonQ describes using lasers to manipulate and entangle its atomic qubits, with laser-based state preparation and readout. | IonQ describes an ultra-high-vacuum environment and precision optical and control hardware. | IonQ claims reconfigurability and all-to-all connectivity for its architecture. This is a company claim, not a platform-wide guarantee or independent ranking. |
| Neutral atoms | Neutral atoms used as qubits, as described in Pasqal’s vendor brochure. | Not stated in the retrieved Pasqal brochure in enough detail for a technical comparison. | Not stated in enough comparable detail in the retrieved Pasqal brochure. | Pasqal presents analog and digital operating modes. The retrieved material does not support an independent comparison of connectivity, error correction or performance. |
| Spin qubits | A spin degree of freedom; the particular implementation is not detailed in the retrieved IBM index. | Not stated in the retrieved IBM index. | Not stated in the retrieved IBM index. | Not stated in the retrieved IBM index. |
How superconducting processors work—and what scaling asks of them
Superconducting quantum processors use circuits fabricated to act as qubits. IBM’s hardware descriptions show that these processors are part of a larger system: its cited implementations use cryogenic infrastructure, microwave control and readout, magnetic shielding, runtime servers and modular control electronics. The processor is therefore only one layer of the equipment needed to operate a system.

For the IBM systems described on its hardware page, the processor is cooled to around one hundredth of a degree above absolute zero. Microwave signals are routed to the processor, readout signals are amplified, and magnetic shielding is part of the setup. These are IBM’s descriptions of its hardware; they should not be treated as a complete specification for every superconducting platform.
Scaling is not just a matter of adding qubits. It also involves cryogenic capacity, control wiring and electronics, signal routing, readout and the classical infrastructure needed to run workloads. IBM’s roadmap statements and processor listings describe vendor plans and specifications, not proof that a future system has already been delivered or has achieved fault tolerance.

How trapped-ion processors work
Trapped-ion systems use ionized atoms held in electromagnetic traps. IonQ’s primer describes its atomic qubits as trapped in three-dimensional space by electromagnetic forces and manipulated and entangled with lasers. Its technical material also describes laser-based state preparation and readout, along with an ultra-high-vacuum environment.
That architecture makes precision optics, laser control and vacuum equipment part of the system. IonQ says its architecture supports reconfigurability and all-to-all connectivity. Those are IonQ’s claims about its own design; they should not be generalized to every trapped-ion system or taken as an independently verified superiority claim. Claims about coherence or low error also need comparable, clearly specified benchmarks before they can support a head-to-head conclusion.

What neutral-atom and spin-qubit approaches add
Neutral atoms
Neutral-atom processors are distinct from trapped-ion systems: the atoms are neutral rather than ionized. Pasqal’s brochure presents its processors as supporting analog and digital modes. The available material does not provide enough independently comparable detail about control, readout, operating conditions, error correction or performance to rank this approach against the others.
Spin qubits
IBM Research’s hardware index listed an explainer titled “What are spin qubits?” dated July 23, 2026. That establishes spin qubits as an approach IBM is covering, but the index entry does not supply the technical detail needed to describe a specific implementation’s controls, environment or scaling path here.

Where photonic integration fits
Photonic integrated circuits are not presented here as a separate qubit architecture. In a November 7, 2024 announcement, IonQ said it was developing photonic integrated circuits and chip-scale ion-trap technology with imec. The stated goal was to move bulk optical components into integrated devices to reduce system size and cost and support scaling. The announcement describes development work and intended benefits, not a delivered system or measured outcome.

A qubit count, roadmap target or connectivity claim does not by itself show how well a machine performs a useful computation. A meaningful comparison needs the metric and its context: which system was measured, what operation or workload was tested, how the result was calculated and under what conditions. Results can differ across workloads, gate quality, connectivity, system overhead and error-correction methods.

IBM Research reported a median randomized benchmarking error of approximately 2.3 × 10-3 per two-qubit gate for its cryo-CMOS control demonstration on a 156-qubit Heron R2 processor in 2026. This is a specific reported metric for that system and demonstration; it should not be compared with another platform’s number unless the methods and conditions are sufficiently comparable. It is not, by itself, a measure of fault-tolerant capability.
IBM’s hardware page lists Heron variants with 133 or 156 qubits and describes Starling as planned for 2029. These are vendor specifications and a roadmap target, not independent comparative statistics or evidence that the planned system has been completed. Processor listings, deployments and roadmaps can change.
Why no approach is universally best
Hardware choices involve different trade-offs. The cited superconducting systems require extensive cryogenic and microwave infrastructure; the cited trapped-ion system uses vacuum and laser-based control. Neutral-atom and spin-qubit approaches are included as distinct directions, but the available descriptions do not support the same level of technical comparison. Integrated photonics may become part of an ion-trap scaling path, but the cited announcement is developmental.
For a specific application, the relevant questions are whether the machine can support the required operations and connectivity, how its errors were measured, what overhead its full system requires, and whether error correction can make the computation reliable at scale. Physical-qubit counts and vendor claims alone cannot answer those questions or establish a universal hardware winner.
