There is no single best PC preset for every Metro game or PC. Start by identifying your edition, then choose your display’s native resolution and a frame-rate target. The biggest edition-specific difference is Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition: it requires ray-tracing-capable graphics hardware and is designed to run with ray tracing enabled. The advice below treats DLSS recommendations as dated starting points, not guaranteed settings for every system.
Identify your Metro game and edition first
Do not apply one game’s settings advice to the entire series. The original Metro Exodus and Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition are distinct editions, and the Enhanced Edition has a different lighting pipeline. The guidance here about mandatory ray tracing and DLSS applies to the PC Enhanced Edition, not automatically to the original release.
Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux should be tuned separately. The official sources cited here do not establish modern, per-setting performance advice for those Redux games. The April 2021 Enhanced Edition FAQ said there were no plans at that time to add ray tracing to Metro Redux; that dated statement is not confirmation of later changes. Do not assume Redux has the same ray-tracing options or requirements as Enhanced Edition.
Check whether your PC can run the edition you own
PLAION’s published system requirements are for the base game, not a guarantee of Enhanced Edition performance. Its support page lists these requirements for Metro Exodus:

PLAION’s support page separately states that Enhanced Edition requires an NVIDIA RTX or AMD RX graphics card; the publisher’s 2021 announcement describes the requirement as a ray-tracing-capable GPU. Check the capabilities of your specific card before choosing Enhanced Edition. The base-game minimum and recommended specifications above should not be read as proof that a system will deliver a particular frame rate in Enhanced Edition. Choose resolution and a frame-rate target before tuning
Set the game to the resolution you intend to play at—normally your display’s native output resolution—then decide what frame rate you want to maintain. Those choices determine whether you should favor image clarity or rendering performance. A preset that suits one GPU, resolution, or target may not suit another, and the official sources do not establish a universal current preset.

- Confirm the game and edition. Verify whether you launched the original Metro Exodus, PC Enhanced Edition, or a Redux title.
- Check compatibility. For Enhanced Edition, confirm that your graphics hardware supports ray tracing.
- Set your resolution and target. Use your intended display resolution and choose a frame-rate goal before changing image-quality options.
- Adjust one option at a time. If performance misses your target, change one graphics setting and retest in representative gameplay so you can judge its effect.
This one-change-at-a-time approach is a practical tuning method, not a benchmark-backed ranking of which individual graphics settings cost the most. Performance depends on the full system and settings; a GPU model alone cannot promise a current FPS result.
Use these DLSS modes as starting points in Enhanced Edition
For Enhanced Edition on an NVIDIA GPU, NVIDIA recommended the following DLSS modes in its May 2021 feature article. Treat them as vendor guidance from 2021: compare the resulting image clarity and performance on your own PC rather than assuming either mode is optimal for your setup.

DLSS mode labels describe different image-quality/performance trade-offs. If the recommended starting point does not meet your target or looks less clear than you prefer, compare the available modes in your game. This recommendation is specifically for Enhanced Edition and NVIDIA’s guidance; it is not a general preset for the original game or Redux titles. Read NVIDIA’s Enhanced Edition DLSS article.
Can you turn ray tracing off in Enhanced Edition?
Enhanced Edition is built around a fully ray-traced lighting pipeline, rather than offering ray tracing as an optional enhancement to a conventional lighting pipeline. Its feature set includes ray-traced global illumination, emissive lighting, and advanced ray-traced reflections. NVIDIA’s 2021 description explains that the global illumination can account for light from the sun, moon, sky, and man-made sources.

The official FAQ answer to whether ray tracing can be turned off was: “No, this version is designed for Ray Tracing to be on.” The answer is from the Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition FAQ dated April 28, 2021. If you need an edition that does not require this ray-tracing pipeline, do not mistake Enhanced Edition for the original release.

Start with the DLSS recommendation for your resolution if you are playing Enhanced Edition on NVIDIA hardware. Then measure performance against your own target while changing one graphics option at a time. Retest in comparable gameplay after each change; adjusting several settings together makes it harder to identify which trade-off helped.

NVIDIA’s May 2021 article claimed DLSS 2.0 made Enhanced Edition “2X faster at 4K.” It also reported that RTX 3060, 3060 Ti, 3070, 3080, and 3090 cards, plus previous-generation cards of equivalent speed, could run the game at maximum settings above 60 FPS at 4K with DLSS 2.0. The same article claimed all GeForce RTX gamers could exceed 60 FPS at 1440p and 80 FPS at 1080p under its described conditions. These are historical NVIDIA claims, not independent comparisons or guarantees for current PCs, drivers, or settings.
NVIDIA also cited an “up to 30%” performance boost from DLSS 1.0 in the original Metro Exodus. That is a retrospective vendor claim about the original release, not a current Enhanced Edition result. Keep the editions and DLSS versions distinct when evaluating performance figures.
What settings guidance is available for Redux?
The sources cited here establish Enhanced Edition’s ray-tracing design and NVIDIA’s historical DLSS guidance, but they do not provide verified, current, per-option performance rankings for Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux. For either Redux title, use the same general tuning discipline—set your resolution and performance goal, then adjust one option at a time and retest—but do not assume Enhanced Edition’s ray-tracing or DLSS recommendations apply.
