A copy can look right but still be the wrong version, damaged, or unable to provide the bonus content you expect.
1. Confirm the exact game and platform
Match the listing to the console you own and the version you want. Check the title, platform, physical format, edition, region, language, and any version details shown on the box or cartridge. A photo of the front cover alone may not reveal the region or even confirm that the pictured item is the one being sold. Amazon’s trade-in criteria similarly require a match for the selected title, platform, and version: Amazon Electronics Condition Criteria.
- Ask for clear photos of the actual item, including the spine, back, disc or cartridge, and any region or edition markings.
- Confirm whether the listing includes the case, manual, inserts, or other contents if those matter to you.
- For a listing that bundles a console, verify the game’s platform and format against that specific hardware model.
2. Inspect condition and ask to test it
Discs
Look at both sides under good light. Check for cracks, deep or extensive scratches, and damage around the center hub; make sure the disc sits properly in its case. If possible, ask the seller to demonstrate that it loads and reaches gameplay on a compatible console. A visual check cannot prove that a disc will work.
Cartridges
Check the label and shell for damage or signs of tampering, and look at the contacts for visible dirt or corrosion. Ask whether the cartridge fits and loads in a compatible console. Do not treat a clean-looking cartridge as proof of playability.

Amazon’s physical-game criteria include all discs or cartridges, expected gameplay, and no cracks or major scratches. Those are useful condition dimensions, not a technical threshold for deciding whether a particular scratch will prevent a game from working: Amazon Electronics Condition Criteria.
3. Look for signs of authenticity
Authentication clues depend on the platform; none of these checks alone guarantees that a copy is genuine.

Nintendo games
Nintendo advises buyers to examine cartridge and packaging print, be cautious when expected packaging or instructions are missing, look for Nintendo quality seals, and confirm the region and language. Its guidance is: “Use caution when purchasing used games.” See Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ.
Xbox discs
Microsoft says an authorized Xbox game disc has an Xbox-logo hologram around the center hub. It also identifies blurry printing, spelling errors, poor print quality, incorrect logos, and a missing Certificate of Authenticity on the opening edge of the case as warning signs. 4. Verify region, language, and DLC compatibility
Do not assume an imported copy will work exactly like a local one. Nintendo Switch game cards are generally not region-locked, with an exception for consoles and cards distributed in China. Nintendo also cautions that overseas software may not have full service and support, and recommends software intended for the console’s region. Downloadable content must match the region of the game. Check Nintendo’s Switch regional compatibility FAQ.
That Switch guidance is not a universal rule for other consoles or generations. For an import, check the official compatibility information for the exact game and console, including language options, region-specific editions, online services, and DLC.

5. Ask what is included—and what has already been used
Ask the seller whether any advertised download code, bonus, subscription trial, or online pass has been redeemed. Also confirm whether the content you want requires an update or an active online service. A used physical copy does not transfer another person’s account or guarantee access to their DLC entitlement; a redeemed code may not be usable again. The status of a particular code or game service is title-specific, so verify it with the seller and the publisher or platform.

Review the seller’s history and ask for a brief test video or an in-person demonstration when practical. Before paying, check the return window, any conditions on returns, and who pays return shipping if the game will not read.

PlayStation’s buying guide recommends checking seller reputation, asking for video proof that a product works, and inspecting it for damage. It also says third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by PlayStation’s warranty. Read the PlayStation buying guide and check the seller’s own terms rather than assuming manufacturer warranty coverage.
If the listing includes a used console
Console-specific risks are separate from buying a game. PlayStation warns that lost or stolen products may be suspended from PlayStation services; this concern mainly applies when the listing includes hardware, not merely a physical game.
7. Compare copies before choosing
If several listings are available, compare them on the same practical factors rather than choosing by asking price alone:
- Identity: confirmed platform, edition, region, and language.
- Playability and condition: whether it has been tested and what damage is visible.
- Completeness: whether the case, manual, or advertised contents are included.
- Transaction protection: seller history, return terms, and any applicable warranty.
- Total cost: the price plus shipping, compared with a new or digital copy available to you.
There is no fixed savings amount that makes a used copy worthwhile: prices vary by title and listing. A lower price may not compensate for uncertain compatibility, missing contents, or a no-return sale.
