Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A matching connector is not enough: CPUs may need a specific BIOS, memory must match the board’s type and supported configuration, M.2 drives must match the slot’s key and interface, and PCIe cards can be affected by lane sharing.
What to gather before checking compatibility
Write down two identifiers before you decide whether to reuse or buy a part:
- Motherboard: exact model and, where shown, hardware revision. For an OEM or prebuilt PC, use the system maker’s documentation as well as any board markings; a generic chipset name is not a complete model.
- Component: full model number or part number. A product family name, connector type, or broad description such as “DDR4 RAM” may not identify the exact supported part.
Open the support page for that exact board or system. Check the manual, specifications, CPU support list, memory QVL (qualified vendor list), device compatibility list, and BIOS notes as relevant. The manufacturer’s page is the best first stop for board-specific support.
Use this compatibility check
- Identify the board and revision. Check the board’s printed model and revision, system documentation, or firmware information. Make sure the support page you open matches it.
- Identify the component precisely. Record the CPU model, memory kit part number, SSD model, or add-in card model—not only its family or connector.
- Confirm the physical fit and electrical interface. Check socket or slot, module type, dimensions, and supported protocol. A part can fit physically and still use an unsupported interface.
- Check the board-specific support information. Search the CPU list or memory QVL by exact model or part number; use the manual and specifications for storage slots and PCIe cards.
- Look for conditions. Check minimum BIOS or firmware, supported generation or speed, memory capacity and module configuration, and any slot-sharing notes.
- Follow the maker’s installation and firmware instructions. If a key detail is missing or contradictory, ask the motherboard maker or system vendor before installing the part.
How to check a CPU
Compare the exact processor model with the motherboard’s CPU support list. Confirm the socket and platform, chipset support, and the minimum BIOS or firmware version shown for that processor. A matching socket by itself does not mean the board supports every CPU that fits it.

For example, Intel says its 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation Core desktop processors use LGA1700 and require Intel 600- or 700-series chipset boards. Intel also notes that some 600- and 700-series boards may need current BIOS, firmware, or CSME when upgrading among these generations. Use the exact board’s CPU list and BIOS notes rather than applying the example to every LGA1700 board. Intel’s compatibility guidance for these Core desktop processor generations was last reviewed February 6, 2025.
If the board requires a BIOS update, verify the current version and follow the board maker’s update procedure. Do not assume an update will make every otherwise unsupported processor compatible.

How to check memory
First confirm the memory type the board supports, such as DDR4 or DDR5, then check the supported speed, capacity, number of modules, and configuration for your board and CPU. Memory generations are not interchangeable just because the modules look similar.
Use the memory QVL on the exact motherboard support page and search for the kit’s complete part number. ASUS says its CPU and memory QVLs are available from the motherboard model’s support page and that listed combinations are checked for compatibility and stability. A QVL entry is evidence for the listed configuration; it does not establish compatibility for every kit in the same product family. ASUS advises considering a BIOS update if problems persist despite following a QVL. ASUS instructions for finding a CPU or memory QVL were updated July 17, 2025.

Memory support can depend on both the board and CPU, so check the board specifications and manual alongside the QVL. ASUS’s PRIME B760M-R D4 specifications illustrate why the exact board matters; do not generalize those specifications to a different model.
How to check an M.2 SSD
M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee that a drive will work in every M.2 slot. Match all three details in the board specifications or manual:

- Key: the slot and drive must have compatible keying.
- Length: the board must support the drive’s physical length.
- Interface: verify whether the slot supports SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both, and whether that matches the drive.
Intel notes that M.2 devices use different keys and interfaces, including PCIe and SATA. Its motherboard buying guide explains why slot details matter. For a concrete example, ASUS lists a Key M slot with specific sizes and PCIe mode support for the PRIME B760M-R D4; those details apply to that model, not to every board.

Check the card’s required physical slot against the motherboard’s manual, then look up the slot’s electrical configuration and lane-sharing notes. Physical slot length, actual link width, and the effect of using another slot can differ. Intel explains that lane use can change link width when multiple devices occupy slots, while board routing and switches can affect the arrangement. Consult the manual for the exact board rather than assuming every long PCIe slot has the same electrical connection.

Also verify the card’s power connectors, case clearance, firmware, and any card-specific requirements in the card and system documentation. Slot compatibility alone does not establish those details.
Quick Recap
What to do when the compatibility information is incomplete
- The model or revision is uncertain: identify it from the board or OEM system documentation before relying on a support list.
- The CPU appears to fit but is absent from the support list: do not treat socket compatibility as confirmation; ask the board maker or system vendor.
- The memory kit is not on the QVL: that means the cited list does not confirm the exact kit and configuration. Recheck the board’s supported type and configuration, and contact the maker if you need a definitive answer.
- The M.2 slot or PCIe lane details are unclear: use the board manual and exact specifications; connector shape alone cannot resolve protocol or lane-sharing questions.
- A supported part does not work as expected: check the listed BIOS or firmware requirements and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting and update instructions.
