If a Metro game stopped launching after an upgrade, first identify which game and edition you have, what changed, and the exact error. Then work through a safe PC checklist: restart, update Windows and graphics drivers, verify the game files in its launcher, temporarily close nonessential background apps, and check the requirements for that specific edition. These steps help narrow down the cause; none is a guaranteed fix.
Identify the game, edition, and upgrade
“Metro” can refer to different games, and Metro Exodus and Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition have different GPU requirements. Before changing settings, write down:
- The exact game and edition shown in your library or game launcher.
- Your launcher, such as Steam or Epic Games Store, and your Windows version.
- What “upgrade” means in your case: a Windows update, graphics-driver update, hardware change, game patch, or move to a different edition.
- The full error message, if one appears, and whether the game process appears in Task Manager.
The timing can be a useful clue, but it does not prove the upgrade caused the failure. Steam notes that launch problems can have many causes across different hardware and software configurations, so its checklist is a first-pass process rather than a diagnosis: Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide.
Try these PC fixes in order
1. Restart, then update Windows and graphics drivers
Restart the PC before testing again. Install applicable Windows updates and current drivers for your graphics hardware. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, note the driver version and timing; do not assume that installing a driver updater or changing hardware is necessary.

2. Verify the game files in its launcher
Use the launcher’s built-in file verification or repair option. Steam identifies damaged or corrupted game files as one possible reason a game will not launch and provides instructions for verifying game files. If you use Epic Games Store or another launcher, follow that launcher’s current official instructions rather than looking for Steam-specific menu labels.
3. Temporarily close nonessential background software
Close nonessential apps that may be running in the background, then try the game again. Restore your usual setup afterward. Do not permanently disable security software as a routine troubleshooting step.

4. Check requirements for your exact edition
Compare your PC with the current store listing for the game and edition you own. Requirements for the original Metro Exodus should not be treated as requirements for Enhanced Edition. A requirements mismatch is worth checking, but by itself does not establish why an individual game is failing to start.
Check the Metro Exodus edition requirements carefully
Steam’s Metro Exodus listing displays Windows requirements for the original game, including a 64-bit operating system, an Intel Core i5-4440 or equivalent processor, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 670 / GTX 1050 or Radeon HD 7870 graphics card, DirectX 11, and 59 GB of available storage. Treat these as the requirements displayed on that listing, not a universal specification for every Metro game, edition, storefront, or platform.

The same listing explicitly says Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition requires an Nvidia RTX or AMD RX GPU. If you are trying to launch Enhanced Edition on a system without the stated GPU class, that is a specific compatibility issue to investigate. It does not, on its own, identify the right hardware purchase or rule out other causes.
Also distinguish a game’s listed operating-system requirement from the launcher’s current support. The Steam listing includes Windows 7/8/10 in the original game’s requirements, while Steam states that its client has supported Windows 10 and later only since January 1, 2024. Check current compatibility for both the game and the launcher on your PC.

Contact the publisher’s official support route through the PLAION METRO Exodus help center, which provides access to FAQs, system requirements, and support-ticket creation. Include details that help support distinguish an edition mismatch from a file, driver, or system issue:

- Windows version or build and your graphics card and driver version.
- What was upgraded and when the launch problem began.
- The exact error text, or whether the game process appears in Task Manager without an error.
- Whether file verification found or repaired anything, and which steps you have already tried.
