Before buying vintage electronics at a thrift store, identify the exact model, inspect it while unplugged, and ask for a demonstration of the functions that matter. A successful power-on is only a basic functional check—not proof that an old device is electrically safe. Do not plug in an item with a damaged cord, exposed wiring, battery leakage or swelling, scorch marks, or other visible faults.
1. Identify the model and what should come with it
Photograph the make, model, serial number, and rating label, along with any accessories. Use the exact model to find its manual and check for recall or safety information. Official UK guidance recommends checking instructions and recalls and asking whether a second-hand product has been modified; it also warns that vintage products may lack modern safety features or no longer meet current requirements. Compare what is in the box with the manual: power supplies, cables, remotes, battery covers, controllers, and any required media can affect whether the device can be used. Ask the seller how old it is, whether it has been repaired or modified, and exactly what was tested. “Tested” does not tell you which functions were checked.
2. Inspect it without power
Do the visual check before asking anyone to plug it in. Examine the case, covers, screws, vents, switches, knobs, ports, plug, and power cord. Look for:

- Frayed or cut cords, exposed conductors, damaged plugs, or cracked cases.
- Missing covers or other parts that could expose hazardous components.
- Loose parts, heavy corrosion, scorch marks, or signs of overheating.
- Evidence of unprofessional repairs or modifications.
- Corrosion, leakage, or swelling in a battery compartment or battery.
If you find damage, exposed wiring, overheating evidence, or a battery fault, do not energize the device for a demonstration. Do not open it in the shop, touch internal components, bypass protective parts, or try a random adapter to see if it works. Consumer guidance in Canada and Singapore also advises checking condition, recalls, and power-accessory compatibility before use (Health Canada: used electrical products; Singapore Consumer Product Safety Office).
3. Ask for a useful demonstration
If the item looks undamaged and the store permits testing, ask staff to demonstrate the relevant functions. Watch the device yourself rather than relying only on a seller’s description. The test should fit the product; no single checklist covers every kind of vintage electronics.

For a game console
Where practical, check that it powers on and produces a stable image. Test the relevant buttons, ports, controller, and disc or cartridge reading. Check network functions only if they matter to you and are available to test. Sony’s guidance for buying a used PlayStation recommends checking power-on, ports, buttons, disc drive, and internet connection, and looking for image problems, overheating, and visible damage: PlayStation: check a used PS5.
For other devices
Choose a few model-specific functions that would make the item usable: for example, whether its display, controls, input/output ports, or playback features work. Check that the necessary accessories are present. A brief demo can reveal an obvious fault, but it cannot establish internal electrical safety.

4. Check the power supply and battery compatibility
A plug that fits is not enough to establish that an adapter or charger is suitable. Check the model’s manual and rating label for the required voltage and compatibility. Health Canada specifically advises matching charger voltage to the device and buying replacement lithium-ion batteries from trusted sellers that can provide a compatible battery (used electrical products; rechargeable batteries). Do not use an unknown or questionable power supply just to test whether the device turns on.
Safety marks and requirements differ by country. For example, Canadian guidance discusses appropriate certification marks on plug-in electrical products. Check the rules and regulator guidance that apply where you live rather than assuming a mark or requirement is universal.

5. Decide whether the price and risk make sense
Before paying, check the store’s return terms; thrift-store policies vary. Factor in missing accessories and the possible cost of professional inspection or repair. For an expensive item, known damage, or an old mains-powered device with questionable condition, consider getting advice from a qualified repairer before use. The ACCC recommends asking about a product’s testing and history and considering independent expert advice for expensive electronics or known damage (ACCC: buying second-hand products).
Walk away if the item has visible electrical damage, a compromised battery, an unsafe or unknown power supply, missing safety-critical parts, or the seller will not allow a reasonable inspection. A low price does not make a risky or incomplete device a bargain.

What a thrift-store test can—and cannot—tell you
Treat an in-store demonstration as a screening check, not a safety certification. A device that powers on and performs a basic function may still have an internal fault that a short demonstration cannot reveal. Guidance in Tasmania recommends that second-hand electrical equipment be undamaged and checked by a qualified repairer or licensed electrician, and says not to use aged or damaged electrical equipment; this is jurisdiction-specific advice, not a universal legal rule (Consumer Affairs Tasmania).
Rules and seller obligations also differ by jurisdiction. In the United States, the CPSC says its laws cover thrift and resale sellers and that resellers are not required to test used products for safety; that does not establish that any particular item is safe.
