A matching name or ID is only a lead: verify the driver supports your Windows version and system type before installing it. Microsoft advises avoiding driver-download sites other than the manufacturer’s official site.
1. Record the PC, device, and Windows details
Before searching, note the full computer make and model, service tag or product number, and the missing device’s exact model. For a custom-built PC, record the motherboard model as well. A PC model and the model of a discrete graphics card, network adapter, printer, or other peripheral are not interchangeable.
Also record your Windows edition and version, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit. These details help rule out packages intended for a different release, architecture, or hardware revision.
2. Identify an unknown device with its hardware ID
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the unknown device and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- In the Property list, select Hardware Ids. If needed, also check Compatible Ids, then copy the values exactly.
Microsoft defines a hardware ID as a vendor-defined identification string Windows uses to match a device to a driver package. Devices can report several IDs, from more specific to more general; Windows uses these and other device identification strings to locate candidate packages. Search the exact hardware ID together with the computer or device maker’s name. An ID can help identify the hardware, but it does not prove that a particular download is authentic, safe, or compatible with your Windows installation.
3. Search trusted sources in order
Check Windows Update
Look for available driver updates in Windows Update first. Microsoft recommends this route and checking with the hardware manufacturer if Windows Update cannot find a compatible driver. However, Windows Update may not contain every historical package: Microsoft described a cleanup of legacy drivers in its June 19, 2025 notice on removing unwanted drivers, and reported that the first batch was expired on February 23, 2026.
Check the computer maker’s official support page
For a branded PC, search the manufacturer’s support site by exact model or service identifier. A driver listed for a similar model may not support your specific configuration.

Check the device maker’s official support page
For a separate card or peripheral, search the component maker’s support site by exact product model and revision where applicable. If a product is discontinued, the manufacturer may still host a legacy download page or support documentation. You can search the exact model and hardware ID with the manufacturer’s name, but prefer results hosted by the manufacturer or Microsoft.

Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” Read its instructions for updating drivers through Device Manager. If the official package is no longer available, do not treat an unofficial archive as verified just because its filename or hardware ID appears to match. Without the exact device and package details, authenticity cannot be confirmed.
4. Compare candidate packages before choosing one
If you find more than one possible driver, compare the actual support details rather than choosing only by the newest date or a matching filename.

- Hardware: Does the package cover the exact model, revision, or hardware IDs?
- Operating system: Does it list your Windows version and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture?
- Source: Is it hosted by Microsoft, the PC maker, or the component maker, rather than an unverified archive?
- Release information: What date and release notes does the manufacturer provide?
- Signature and installation: Is the driver signed and accepted by Windows? Is it a complete installer, or does it require manual installation from an INF file?
A package matching an ID can still target another Windows generation or device revision. A match is a clue for compatibility, not a guarantee.
5. Install the driver and keep a recovery path
Use the manufacturer’s installer if the package provides one. If it supplies files for manual installation, Microsoft’s Device Manager route is to download and extract the package, then browse to its folder:
- Download the package from the manufacturer’s official page and extract it if necessary.
- In Device Manager, right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers and point Windows to the extracted folder.
- Follow the prompts. Windows installs the package if it recognizes a suitable driver.
Administrators familiar with command-line installation can use Microsoft’s PnPUtil documentation.

Before replacing a working driver, make a recovery plan if your system supports it. A restore point may help; also keep the original installer and note the current driver version so you can attempt to roll back if the replacement causes problems. These steps reduce risk but do not guarantee recovery.

Even a driver that worked on an earlier Windows installation may not load on a current one. Windows Code Integrity checks kernel-driver integrity and trusted signatures. Microsoft’s kernel-mode code-signing policy says an April 2026 security update means certain drivers signed under the expired cross-signed program are no longer trusted by default, although some legacy drivers remain covered by an allow list.
Do not disable signature enforcement as a routine workaround. First look for a signed package from the device maker or a package delivered through Windows Update. If none exists, weigh the device’s importance against the security cost of using an unsupported driver or older system.

7. Decide what to do if no compatible driver exists
If the manufacturer offers no package for your Windows release and Windows Update finds none, there may be no safe, supported driver for that configuration. Your realistic options depend on the hardware and how you use it:
- Use an operating system that the manufacturer supports, if that is appropriate and remains secure for your needs.
- Keep the device on a legacy system isolated from networks when compatibility is essential and the security risks are acceptable.
- Replace the component with hardware that has a supported driver.
- Continue with limited functionality if Windows provides a basic driver and that meets your needs.
Driver availability does not make an unsupported operating system secure. Microsoft ended free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025; check the current Microsoft driver guidance and Windows lifecycle information before relying on an older installation.
