Before paying, test the camera with a compatible lens, charged battery, and memory card; take and review sample photos; and check the sensor, autofocus, controls, card slots, ports, and signs of impact or moisture. A low shutter count alone is not proof of good condition. Use the inspection results, repair history, and any untested functions to judge whether the asking price is fair.

Before you meet the seller

Confirm the exact model and what comes with it

Ask for the precise camera model, included accessories, known faults, repair history, and any history of impact or moisture exposure. Request a fresh, original JPEG or RAW test image—not just a photo of the camera—and ask when it was taken. For a remote sale, request current evidence that the seller has the camera and can demonstrate its important functions.

Check the exact model’s manual before bringing test equipment. Lens mount, battery type, memory-card format and capacity, and available features vary by camera; there is no universal card or battery that will work with every body.

Plan a test, not just a visual inspection

Bring a charged, compatible battery, a known-good lens, and a compatible memory card if possible. A known-good item helps narrow down whether a fault is in the camera or in the accessory. If you expect to use particular ports, bring the relevant cable or device to test them.

Inspect the body and sensor

Look for impact, wear, and signs of moisture

Check the body seams, mount, hot shoe, tripod socket, strap lugs, card doors, and battery compartment. Look for cracks, bent parts, loose screws, unusual play, damaged seals, residue, or corrosion on contacts. These may indicate impact, wear, or moisture exposure; ask the seller about anything suspicious and whether repairs were made. Request receipts or other repair documentation when available.

With the lens removed, inspect the exposed sensor visually for scratches or obvious damage without touching it. A camera can have a low shutter count and still have a damaged sensor.

Take and review test photos

  1. Attach a compatible lens and insert a compatible card.
  2. Photograph a detailed subject, then take several more images under ordinary exposure. If practical, also photograph a simple, evenly lit scene.
  3. Open the actual image files and inspect them at high magnification. Look for defects that persist across multiple images.
  4. If you notice a mark or other anomaly, repeat the shot under ordinary exposure before treating it as a camera fault. One unusual image does not, by itself, establish the cause.

A fresh original test file is more useful than a compressed preview because you can inspect the captured image directly. For a practical inspection checklist, see ShutterCount.org’s used-camera inspection guide.

Check shutter operation and interpret the count carefully

Ask how the shutter count was obtained

Shutter count is one clue about use, not a condition grade. It is particularly useful for understanding mechanical use on a DSLR. On a mirrorless camera, electronic-shutter photography and video may account for substantial use that a mechanical shutter count does not show. Consider the count alongside the exact model, physical condition, use history, repair records, and asking price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no reliable, model-independent shutter-count cutoff that establishes whether a used camera is good or bad. Avoid applying a generic lifespan estimate or percentage discount without a source for that exact model. ShutterCount.org’s inspection guide summarizes the practical point: “The best used camera is rarely the one with the lowest number.”

Test the available shutter modes

Try the shutter modes the camera offers, including mechanical or electronic modes where available, and make a short burst of photos. Watch for inconsistent operation, warning messages, or missed frames. The specific modes and features depend on the body.

Test the lens mount and autofocus

Inspect the mount and contacts

Remove the lens and check the mount for bent areas, impact marks, loose screws, damaged electronic contacts, or excessive play. Reattach the lens and see whether it locks securely or moves abnormally.

Check focus with a lens you trust

If possible, use a known-good compatible lens. Test single and continuous autofocus, focus changes from near to far, low-light focusing, and several focus points. Review the resulting files rather than relying only on the focus confirmation display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A failed focus test does not identify the faulty part on its own. The lens, camera settings, firmware, calibration, or body could be involved. For further practical testing ideas, see ShutterXchange’s used-camera checking guide.

If a lens is included, inspect it separately

Look at the front and rear elements for scratches, haze, and fungus. Turn the focus and zoom rings, and test autofocus and stabilization if the lens has those features. These are practical condition checks; the inspection alone cannot establish repairability or the effect of a particular mark on image quality.

Test controls, displays, and card slots

Operate every control

Try the command dials, joystick, directional controls, menu and playback buttons, autofocus and shutter buttons, record button, mode dial, locks, and custom buttons. Turn dials slowly while watching the display to catch skipped or doubled inputs.

Check the screen and viewfinder

  • Rear screen: Look for dead pixels, discoloration, flicker, and loose hinges; test touch response if supported. Move an articulated screen through its full range.
  • Optical viewfinder: Look for haze, fungus, debris, focusing-screen damage, or problems with displayed information.
  • Electronic viewfinder: Check for dead pixels, flicker, color shifts, brightness problems, eye-sensor faults, lag, or dropouts.

Test each memory-card slot separately

Insert and remove a compatible card. Test every slot individually for read and write operation, and check that each door and latch works. Make and review several images using each slot; a working first slot does not establish that a second one works.

Check ports, battery, and accessories

Test the connections you need

Inspect USB, HDMI, microphone, and headphone ports where present. Check for bent or loose sockets, cracked covers, and cable wear. Connect a cable or device to the ports you expect to use so you know they function, rather than relying on appearance alone.

Inspect the battery compartment and included battery

Look for corrosion, residue, damaged contacts, cracked doors, or compromised seals. Test the included battery’s performance during the inspection if you can. A weak battery can affect the value of the deal without automatically making an otherwise sound camera a poor purchase; account for the cost of a compatible replacement in your offer.

Check accessory compatibility

Verify the battery and memory card against the camera’s exact model manual before buying replacements or relying on accessories in the sale. Compatibility is model-specific.

Decide whether the price matches the condition

Compare the camera’s price with its observed condition and available documentation, rather than treating one number—especially shutter count—as decisive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What to compare What to establish
Sensor and sample images Whether visible damage or image defects persist in repeated, ordinary-exposure tests.
Shutter or exposure count How the count was obtained and how it fits the model, camera type, use history, and physical condition.
Autofocus and mount Whether a known-good compatible lens focuses reliably and the mount and contacts appear sound.
Slots, controls, displays, and ports Which functions were tested, which work, and which remain unverified.
Moisture, impact, and repairs What condition evidence and repair records the seller can provide.
Total cost Whether the asking price reflects faults, missing accessories, or likely replacement needs such as a weak battery.

Separate faults that prevent normal use from cosmetic wear, and decide whether any issue is acceptable at the stated price. The inspection does not provide a universal condition grade or repair quote. If the camera cannot be tested, treat that uncertainty as transaction risk and weigh it against a tested listing with clear return terms.
