As of October 7, 2026, Zcash NU7’s published Testnet activation height was 4,465,026, but the sources available at that date did not independently confirm that activation had occurred. Mainnet had no assigned activation height. A community timeline listed November 5 as a target—not a confirmed launch date—and scheduled a decision for October 20.

Status snapshot: October 7, 2026. NU7 is a planned Zcash network upgrade. Its proposed changes include faster target block spacing and changes to fees, issuance, and transaction-version support. The final set of changes and Mainnet timing were not settled in the sources available on this date.

What are the NU7 Testnet and Mainnet dates?

Network Published status as of October 7, 2026 What to make of it
Testnet Zcash Foundation’s October 2 Zebra announcement named activation height 4,465,026. A community timeline listed October 6, 2026. Both the listed height and date had passed, but the sources did not independently confirm observed activation. Node operators should check current project or chain status before relying on that date.
Mainnet The official NU7 upgrade page and Foundation announcement said no activation height had been set. A community timeline listed an October 20 decision and November 5 target date. The decision and target date were future milestones, not a confirmed activation schedule. Treat the Mainnet date as unset unless Zcash publishes a subsequent official decision.

The Foundation’s Testnet announcement gave operators a specific instruction: upgrade before height 4,465,026. That instruction concerns Testnet; it is not a Mainnet activation height or a Mainnet upgrade deadline.

What changes does NU7 propose?

ZIP 259 is a draft deployment proposal. The Zcash ZIP index describes the planned NU7 proposal set, but the deployment proposal determines which items actually make it into the upgrade. Until that decision is published, these should be treated as proposed rather than guaranteed changes.

Proposal Planned change
ZIP 218 Set target block spacing to 25 seconds.
ZIP 235 Remove 60% of transaction fees from circulation.
ZIP 237 Adjust issuance in a halving-preserving way.
ZIP 2003 Disable version 4 transactions.
ZIP 2008 Update an address list.
ZIP 317 May also be updated; the sources did not specify the final change.

Does faster block spacing mean more ZEC will be issued each year?

Not by itself. The Foundation’s October 2, 2026 announcement compared an average prior first-confirmation wait of 75 seconds with NU7’s 25-second target block spacing. The first figure describes an average wait; the second is a protocol target, not a guarantee that every payment confirms in 25 seconds. More frequent target blocks do not alone determine annual issuance: the proposed halving-preserving issuance design also matters. The final deployment terms are needed to assess the net issuance schedule, so block frequency alone is not enough to conclude that more ZEC will be released yearly.

What should Zcash node operators do?

The official NU7 page says that if the upgrade includes the expected major consensus changes, NU7 will not be supported by zcashd; it also says zcashd is being deprecated. The page advises operators to prepare to move to Zebra. That conditional matters: the final consensus changes and Mainnet activation height had not been settled as of October 7.

The Foundation’s October 2 announcement covered Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0, a release candidate rather than a stable release. Operators should check the current Zebra release channel and the official upgrade instructions before installing software or scheduling a production transition. The Foundation’s guidance at the time was: “Mainnet operators do not need to do anything yet: no Mainnet activation height has been set, and this is a release candidate, not a stable release.”

What does NU7 mean for wallets and transactions?

No new transaction format does not mean no compatibility risk

The Foundation announcement says NU7 introduces no new transaction format. ZIP 259 says version 5 and version 6 transaction structures remain unchanged. However, the draft ZIP cautions that this does not make a transaction automatically valid across the upgrade boundary: signatures commit to a consensus branch ID. Wallets and services must handle the applicable consensus rules correctly.

Remaining Sprout funds are a specific concern

Under ZIP 2003’s proposed disabling of version 4 transactions, Sprout transfers—which can only be represented by version 4 transactions—would no longer be possible. ZIP 259 says Sprout funds still in the Sprout pool once version 4 transactions are disabled would become unspendable. This concerns funds in the Sprout pool, not all shielded ZEC. Anyone who may hold Sprout funds should seek current guidance from their wallet provider and verify the final upgrade rules before the proposed change takes effect.

Check readiness with the wallet provider

Wallet support for a coinholder vote is not proof of general NU7 readiness. Zcash Labs’ vote site identified Vizor, Zodl, and Zkool as supporting its NU7 vote flow, and said Keystone hardware wallets work with that voting system. That is evidence about voting compatibility only; it does not establish broader wallet support, transaction handling, or a required wallet migration. Ask the provider of the wallet you actually use for its current NU7 version and migration guidance.

How to assess NU7 readiness

  • If you operate a Testnet node: check the current chain and project status, since the published Testnet date and height had passed by October 7 but observed activation was not independently confirmed in the cited announcements.
  • If you operate a Mainnet node: wait for an official activation height and deployment decision, and follow current Zebra release guidance rather than treating a release candidate as a stable production release.
  • If you use a wallet: get a NU7-specific status from your wallet provider; do not infer general support from participation in the coinholder vote.
  • If you may hold Sprout funds: determine whether your funds are in the Sprout pool and review provider guidance in light of the proposed version 4 transaction disablement.
  • If you are evaluating payment speed: distinguish target block spacing from the confirmation time of an individual transaction.
