NU7 activated on Zcash’s public Testnet at block 4,465,026 on October 4, 2026. A documented self-hosted setup uses a Testnet-configured Zebra node with lightwalletd, then connects a compatible wallet after lightwalletd has synchronized. The available documentation does not verify that any specific consumer wallet app supports NU7 Testnet, so confirm support with its maintainer before importing wallet data or sending test transactions.

What NU7 Testnet means for your wallet setup

The Zcash Foundation reported NU7’s Testnet activation on October 4, 2026, at block 4,465,026. Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 was identified as the first release candidate for the upgrade, with Testnet support described in its release notes. A release candidate and a Testnet activation do not establish stable mainnet deployment or compatibility in a consumer wallet app. Zcash Foundation’s engineering update

NU7 changes target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds and adds per-pool and global limits on shielded actions. The deployment ZIP says it does not introduce a new transaction format: v4 transactions are invalid after activation, while v5 and v6 remain valid. Its draft leaves the Mainnet activation height unresolved, so a tentative target should not be treated as a confirmed date. ZIP 259 NU7 deployment ZIP

Choose a wallet route before configuring anything

The documented self-hosted architecture is Zebra configured for Testnet and lightwalletd connected to that node. This is a node-and-backend setup, not a verified click-by-click guide for a particular consumer app. The reviewed documentation does not confirm that a named app has been tested with NU7 public Testnet. Check with the app maintainer for the exact app version, network option, and NU7 support before importing sensitive wallet data or attempting a transaction. lightwalletd documentation Zebra Book

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The Zcash Foundation lists Zashi and Ywallet as examples of wallets that use lightwalletd, but that general context is not evidence that either supports NU7 Testnet. Wallet and backend choices also affect privacy properties; lightwalletd is under active development and has not received a thorough external audit. lightwalletd repository

Set up the self-hosted Zebra and lightwalletd route

  1. Install and configure Zebra for Testnet. Use Zebra, the node implementation identified for the NU7 Testnet path. The documentation does not establish zcashd as NU7-capable. Zebra Book
  2. Enable Zebra’s JSON-RPC server. lightwalletd needs this connection to the node. Its documentation gives port 18232 as the conventional Testnet port and says the RPC service should not be exposed beyond localhost. Keep it bound locally rather than opening it to the public internet. lightwalletd developer documentation
  3. Run lightwalletd against the Testnet Zebra node. Configure the backend for the same Testnet network as the node. For production use, the documentation calls for a trusted certificate; its no-TLS development setup is not suitable for production. lightwalletd developer documentation
  4. Wait for lightwalletd to synchronize. Do not connect the wallet until the backend reports that it is in sync. The Zebra Book describes wallet connection as the final step, while noting that its demo client/fork combination was not tested with the current official lightwalletd. Zebra Book
  5. Connect only a wallet whose maintainer confirms NU7 Testnet support. Verify the wallet is pointed at Testnet and uses the intended backend. The sources do not specify app menus or guarantee compatibility for a consumer app, so do not infer support from a general Testnet option or from an app’s use of lightwalletd.
  6. Use test funds only. Obtain TAZ through a community support channel or a Testnet faucet, as the official guide suggests. Confirm the network again before sending a test transaction. Zcash Testnet Guide

Which wallet works on NU7 Testnet?

No specific consumer wallet app is verified by the cited documentation as compatible with NU7 public Testnet. That means compatibility remains unconfirmed here, not that no app works. Ask the wallet maintainer whether the exact version supports NU7 Testnet, and whether it can connect to your Zebra/lightwalletd setup or to a provider that supports this network.

How to get TAZ and avoid confusing it with ZEC

Testnet’s native currency is TAZ, not mainnet ZEC. The official guide states: “Testnet coins are distinct from actual ZEC and do not have value.” It suggests asking in Zcash community support or using a faucet to obtain testnet coins. A Testnet balance cannot be treated as spendable ZEC. Zcash Testnet Guide
