That helps a tank cross weak soil with less risk of sinking. Tracks are not an all-terrain advantage, though: they add weight, can be damaged, and are only one part of a vehicle’s mobility system.
How tracks help a heavy tank cross soft ground
A tank’s weight presses down through its tracks along much of the vehicle’s length. Compared with a set of small tire contact patches, that extended footprint can distribute the load and lower ground pressure, making it less likely that the vehicle will sink into soft soil. The U.S. Army’s ERDC library abstract identifies improved performance on soft soil as the main reason tracked vehicles have been used.
Ground pressure is useful for comparing vehicles, but it does not by itself predict whether a tank will get through a particular patch of terrain. The Army’s technical report catalog record lists ground pressure and weight distribution as comparison and test measures for wheeled and tracked vehicles. Soil strength, vehicle weight and load distribution, traction, and design also affect mobility.
Tracks versus wheels: the trade-offs

The Australian Army Research Centre describes tank mobility as depending on “low ground pressure, the resistance of tracks to damage by small arms fire, adequate horse-power and suitable suspension.” Its article appears in Australian Army Journal, Volume 3, Number 3; the page extract does not establish an author or publication date. How tracked vehicles steer
The usual principle is differential steering: the two tracks move at different speeds, and the vehicle turns toward the side whose track is moving more slowly. If one track is stopped while the other keeps moving, the vehicle can turn around the slower side, though the exact behavior depends on the vehicle and ground conditions.
A turn is not just a matter of track speed. Track-ground forces and slip influence how the vehicle responds. The SAE steering-paper abstract identifies vehicle geometry, road-wheel loading, track-pad sliding or deflection, and track slippage as relevant factors. Tank steering systems vary, so this principle is not a description of every transmission or steering design.

Why tracks do not always win
Tracks are a solution to the challenge of carrying a heavy vehicle across ground that may not support it well; they are not a guarantee of better mobility everywhere. Rocky terrain can damage tracks, and obstacles such as ravines or steps may stop a vehicle regardless of its footprint. Conversely, wheels are not limited to paved roads: tire pressure, drive layout, and vehicle design can make a wheeled vehicle effective off-road.
A fair comparison therefore considers the particular terrain and vehicle together: soil strength, load distribution, ground contact, traction, tire pressure and drive configuration, track durability, steering behavior, and road or bridge constraints. There is no single ground-pressure figure that establishes a universal advantage for all tanks and wheeled vehicles.
