Neither centralized exchanges (CEXs) nor decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are always cheaper, safer, or more liquid for trading ETH. The better choice depends on the exact ETH pair, trade size, live market depth, fees, and—if you swap on Ethereum—the current network cost. It also depends on whether you want an exchange to hold your funds or prefer to authorize trades from your own wallet.
How CEX and DEX trades work
Centralized exchanges use order books
A centralized exchange such as Coinbase Advanced matches orders through a central limit order book. Buyers and sellers submit bids and asks; market orders can fill against available orders, while limit orders specify a price. Decentralized exchanges swap against pools
A DEX such as Uniswap executes swaps through smart contracts against liquidity held in pools, rather than matching an order against a conventional book of bids and asks. The output depends on the pool’s current state, the route used, and the size of the swap. Uniswap explains this mechanism in its swap documentation. In Uniswap Labs’ February 21, 2025 educational article, it defines a DEX as “a peer-to-peer marketplace that allows users to swap crypto assets without an intermediary.”
What determines the total cost of an ETH trade?
Compare the amount you will actually receive, not a single advertised fee. A CEX trade may incur a maker or taker fee and, depending on the product, a spread. A DEX swap may incur a pool fee, price impact, routing effects, and network transaction costs. A low pool fee alone does not establish that a DEX trade will deliver more ETH or a better price.

Compare the same trade at roughly the same time
- Choose the exact ETH pair and enter approximately the same trade size on each venue.
- On a CEX, inspect the order preview, current fee, spread, and available depth at the order size.
- On a DEX, inspect the quoted output, route, price impact, pool fee, and network cost shown before signing.
- Compare the final amount you expect to receive after visible costs. Include withdrawal or network costs if your goal requires moving the ETH elsewhere.
Coinbase notes that costs can vary with order size, market conditions, payment method, asset, and jurisdiction; confirm the preview and fee information for your account. Coinbase fee disclosure. Ethereum network costs are time-sensitive, so a fixed gas figure is not a reliable comparison.
Which venue has better liquidity for ETH?
There is no permanent answer across every ETH pair and trade size. On a CEX, examine executable order-book depth and spread. On a DEX, examine the pool liquidity and quoted output for the proposed swap. A venue that looks deep for one pair or trade size may not be the best choice for another.

What a historical Uniswap comparison found
In a May 5, 2022 analysis, Uniswap Labs researchers Gordon Liao and Dan Robinson reported that Uniswap v3 had about twice the liquidity of Binance and Coinbase for ETH/USD; about three times Binance’s and 4.5 times Coinbase’s for ETH/BTC; and about three times the average of major centralized exchanges for ETH/mid-cap pairs. These are historical findings from the authors’ analysis, not a current ranking. The article also excluded transaction costs such as Ethereum gas, venue fees, and unexpected pre-trade slippage. Those figures do not identify the best venue for a present-day trade. For a decision now, use live depth and the expected output for your specific pair and size.

Who holds the ETH, and who controls the trade?
On a CEX, the exchange holds hosted balances
Trading in an exchange account is account-based: the provider holds assets left on the platform under its custody and operational arrangements. This can make trading simpler, but it means you rely on the provider to safeguard and provide access to those hosted balances. Review the provider’s terms, supported pairs, and availability for your jurisdiction. Coinbase’s fee disclosure also notes that product and cost conditions can vary by jurisdiction. On a DEX, your wallet authorizes transactions
A DEX swap is authorized from a connected wallet and executed by smart contracts. You retain responsibility for wallet access, transaction signing, and token approvals. Uniswap describes its protocol as designed for self-custody. Uniswap swap guide.

Self-custody changes who controls access; it does not remove smart-contract, token, phishing, or malicious-approval risks. A hardware wallet may help protect access to signing keys, but it does not prevent a user from approving a harmful transaction or eliminate protocol and token risks.

- CEX: Account setup, supported ETH pairs, and availability depend on the provider and jurisdiction. Trades are held within the platform account until you withdraw.
- DEX: You need a compatible wallet, assets to swap, and enough of the network’s native token to pay transaction fees. On Ethereum, that means ETH for gas. Uniswap swap guide.
- Token selection: Permissionless token availability can give DEX users access to a wider range of assets, but it also makes it important to assess the token and contract rather than assume a listing has been vetted.
- Operational responsibility: A CEX concentrates custody and access with the provider; a DEX puts wallet access and transaction approvals in the user’s hands. Neither model is a blanket safety guarantee.
Which should you use to trade ETH?
Choose based on the execution and custody tradeoffs you can verify for your trade, not a universal claim that one venue type is superior.

- Consider a CEX if you want an order book, account-based trading, and a hosted balance. Check the live spread, depth, your fee tier, pair availability, and the order preview.
- Consider a DEX if you want to trade from a self-custody wallet and are comfortable reviewing a smart-contract quote and signing an onchain transaction. Check output, price impact, pool fee, route, and current network cost.
- Compare both when the trade size or price matters enough to justify checking live quotes on each. Use the same pair, similar size, and near-simultaneous previews; the result can change with market and network conditions.
Uniswap Labs reported more than $4 trillion in all-time swap volume in its February 21, 2025 DEX explainer. That is a protocol-reported cumulative figure at publication, not an independent measure of current ETH liquidity or a guarantee of execution quality for a particular trade.
