A tank transmission carries engine power to the tracks, manages speed and torque through gear ratios, and may also help steer and brake the vehicle. “Manual,” “automatic,” and “automated” describe how gear changes are selected or carried out; “cross-drive” describes an arrangement that can combine propulsion and steering. Those terms answer different questions, and the design depends on the tank and transmission model.
What a tank transmission does
The transmission connects the engine to the vehicle’s drive system. By changing gear ratios, it helps match engine output to the speed and torque the tracks need. In some tracked vehicles, it also directs power to the left and right tracks in different amounts to turn. A transmission that combines propulsion and steering in one assembly is often described as a cross-drive.
The U.S. Army’s ordnance lesson on the M1A1 Abrams says its driver uses the X1100-3B transmission to control forward and reverse movement, steering, and braking. That is a model-specific example, not a rule for every tank. U.S. Army Ordnance: Introduction to the X1100-3B Transmission
What manual, automatic, and automated mean
Manual shifting
With a manual transmission, the driver directly selects or initiates gear changes, using mechanical or assisted controls. The presence of a lever or other driver control does not, by itself, establish that a transmission is manually shifted; the internal design and shift method matter.

Automatic shifting
An automatic transmission changes ratios without requiring the driver to carry out each gear change. A 1977 SAE paper describes the X1100 as a “fully automatic shifting transmission.” That wording applies to the transmission discussed in that paper; it should not be extended to every tank or every later variant. Automated mechanical shifting
A mechanical gearbox can use powered or controlled mechanisms to execute shifts. Call a particular tank’s system automated only when a source for that model supports the description. Simplified driver controls alone are not enough to classify the gearbox.

How steering can be part of the transmission
In a tracked vehicle, turning requires the tracks to move at different speeds. A cross-drive may integrate steering elements with gear reduction and propulsion in one assembly, but cross-drive does not mean one specific steering design.
For the X1100 described in the 1977 SAE paper, the documented arrangement includes hydrostatic steering with pivot steer and a four-speed range pack. These features describe that paper’s X1100 design, not all cross-drive transmissions. The Army’s X1100-3B lesson separately identifies steering, braking, and forward/reverse movement as driver-controlled functions. Neither source supports a claim that all tanks use hydrostatic steering or can pivot in place.

Examples of documented tank transmission systems
M1A1 Abrams: X1100-3B
The Army ordnance lesson says the X1100-3B mounts directly to the engine and receives torque through an input quill shaft attached to the torque converter. It identifies the driver-controlled functions as forward and reverse movement, steering, and braking. The 1977 SAE paper’s X1100 description adds a four-speed range pack, hydrostatic steering with pivot steer, integral power brakes, high-speed reverse, and torque-converter lockup across gear ranges. Treat those details as the historical paper’s description rather than a complete specification for every X1100-3B variant.
XTG411: hydrodynamic cross-drive
The Defense Logistics Agency’s ASSIST listing identifies MIL-PRF-46750 as a specification covering the hydrodynamic XTG411 cross-drive transmission and major components for tracked military vehicles. The listing reports the specification as active and dated 20 July 2026. XHM1500: hydromechanical development
A U.S. government history of the XM1 development effort describes the XHM1500 as a hybrid hydrostatic-mechanical transmission. It reports that the hydrostatic elements performed well, but available hydraulic control technology did not provide optimal control, and development testing did not produce the expected fuel-economy improvement. CD850: historical cross-drive family
The DLA listing for MIL-DTL-11603 says the specification covered four CD850 cross-drive types for tracked combat vehicles. It shows the specification as inactive, with an inactivation date of 2 September 2016. That is evidence of a historical cross-drive family, not current specification status. How to compare two tank transmissions
Comparisons are most useful when they identify the vehicle, variant, transmission, and source rather than relying on a broad label. Check:
- How the driver selects gears and whether the transmission changes ratios automatically.
- The number and behavior of forward and reverse ranges, when documented.
- How steering is produced and whether its mechanism is integrated with the transmission.
- Whether braking is integrated into the transmission assembly or controlled separately.
- How power is transmitted or combined internally, such as through hydrodynamic or hydromechanical elements.
- Which vehicle model, variant, and publication date the specification describes.
These details describe architecture; they do not establish which system is more reliable, fuel-efficient, or capable. That kind of ranking requires comparable test data.
What the available examples do—and do not—show
The examples document several distinct designs and development histories, but they are not a census of tanks. They do not establish what proportion of tanks use manual, automatic, or automated transmissions, nor do they justify classifying a tank based on its controls alone. For example, the National Army Academy of Ukraine catalogue lists a 2023, 323-page textbook on the T-72’s structure and operation, but the catalogue entry does not provide enough technical detail to classify the T-72 transmission as manual or automatic.
