In the Uniswap web app, a limit order lets you specify an ETH trade’s execution price and expiry; it fills only if a third-party filler can match it. A regular Uniswap Protocol swap’s slippage tolerance instead sets how much the price may move between submission and execution. There is no single tolerance percentage that suits every ETH swap: check the live quote, expected output, liquidity and price impact before signing.
How do I set a limit order for ETH?
These steps apply to the Uniswap web app, not every exchange or wallet. The exact options available depend on the selected tokens and network.
- Connect your wallet to the Uniswap web app and select Limit.
- Choose the token you will pay and the token you want to receive. For an ETH trade, check that the selected asset is the intended ETH asset on the intended network.
- Enter the amount, then set the execution price. The quick-price options are relative to the current market price, according to Uniswap’s limit-order instructions.
- Choose an expiry, review the order details, submit it and sign the wallet message.
Submitting makes the order available to third-party fillers. A limit order is an agreement to trade at the price you set, not an instruction to trade immediately at any price. Uniswap says its web-app limit orders have no slippage in the ordinary swap-tolerance sense: they execute only at the agreed price if matched. See Uniswap’s explanation of slippage on limit orders.
Why might an order not fill when ETH reaches my price?
A displayed market price touching your limit does not guarantee a completed trade. Uniswap lists high network costs, no available filler, insufficient liquidity and insufficient token balance as reasons an order may not execute. It can remain open until it is filled, canceled or expires. Check the order status and its expiry rather than assuming it completed.

What slippage tolerance should I use?
For Uniswap Protocol v2, v3 and v4 swaps, slippage tolerance is the maximum price movement you accept between submitting and executing a transaction. For an exact-input trade, the tolerance is applied in terms of the output token; for an exact-output trade, it is applied in terms of the input token. The setting is a limit on acceptable movement while the transaction is pending, not a prediction that the price will move by that amount. The Uniswap developer documentation on swaps describes this behavior.
There is no universally correct percentage for an ETH swap. Review the live quote and expected output, along with pool liquidity and the quoted price impact. Choose only a tolerance whose possible price movement you are willing to accept. A tighter setting may cause the transaction to fail if the price moves beyond it; a broader setting permits a less favorable execution.

Do not treat raising tolerance as an automatic fix for a failed swap. First check whether the quote is still acceptable and whether the transaction failed because the market moved beyond your setting. UniswapX has different execution semantics: its tolerance does not cap order spread in the same way as classic protocol swaps, as explained in the Uniswap documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is slippage the same as price impact?
No. Price impact is the expected effect of your trade size on the pool price; it generally grows when a trade is large relative to available liquidity. Slippage tolerance is how much additional price movement you allow between submitting a swap and its execution. A trade can have substantial quoted price impact before it is submitted, while tolerance addresses movement during the wait for execution.

How the three controls differ
| Term | What it specifies | If market conditions do not fit | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit order | An agreed execution price and expiry | The order can remain open or expire if a filler cannot match it. | Execution can depend on liquidity, an available filler, network costs and token balance. |
| Swap slippage tolerance | Maximum accepted price movement while a classic protocol swap is pending | The swap may fail if movement exceeds the tolerance; a broader setting accepts more movement. | UniswapX does not use tolerance to cap order spread in the same way. |
| Price impact | The expected effect of trade size on the pool price | A large trade or thin liquidity can produce greater impact. | It is distinct from price movement while a transaction is pending. |
Why did my ETH swap fail?
- The price moved beyond the tolerance: Review the updated quote. If its output is no longer acceptable, do not simply widen the setting to force the swap through.
- The quoted trade has material price impact: Check trade size and liquidity. Tolerance does not remove price impact.
- You submitted a limit order rather than a regular swap: A limit order can stay open because no filler can match it, liquidity is insufficient, network costs are too high, or the balance is insufficient. Confirm its status and expiry.
