Shumate Engineering’s patented Hybrid-Dry/Adiabatic-Cooling (HD/AC) design is intended to serve traditional air-cooled data-center racks and direct-to-chip liquid-cooled equipment from one facility system. It combines two stated water-supply temperatures—68°F for air-cooled CRAC systems and 90°F for direct-to-chip cooling—with a hybrid cooler designed to use dry cooling first and evaporative assistance when outdoor conditions call for it. Shumate claims substantial energy and water savings, but the available coverage does not independently verify those figures.

What Shumate’s HD/AC patent covers

Shumate Engineering received U.S. Patent No. 12,426,214 for its Hybrid-Dry/Adiabatic-Cooling design, according to the patent announcement from Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox. The available announcement identifies the patent number; it does not establish the grant date or provide enough claim detail to explain the legal scope of every patented feature.

In practical terms, HD/AC is a project-scale cooling design, not a consumer product or a standalone appliance. Shumate describes it as a way for a data center to support conventional air-cooled equipment and newer liquid-cooled computing loads in the same facility design.

How the cooling arrangement is described

Two supply temperatures for different IT loads

The design description specifies a closed loop with two water-temperature flows: 68°F water for traditional air-cooled computer room air-conditioning (CRAC) systems, and 90°F water for direct-to-chip liquid cooling. The aim is to accommodate the differing cooling needs of legacy air-cooled racks and liquid-cooled infrastructure without designing for only one type of load. These temperatures are figures in Shumate’s 2025 announcement, not independently measured operating results.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Dry cooling with evaporative assistance

Shumate describes the central equipment as a hybrid adiabatic cooler: a dry cooler that can add evaporative cooling when conditions warrant it. The company says the design can operate in economizer mode during cooler periods and modulate evaporative assistance in warmer weather. That is the intended operating approach as described by Shumate, not evidence of performance across particular climates or seasons.

What savings Shumate claims—and what the figures establish

In its July 2025 announcement, Shumate claimed 50% lower power consumption and 93% lower water use compared with conventional cooling designs. The announcement and the related IDC Nova coverage do not provide an independent test report or a complete comparison methodology. The percentages should therefore be read as company-reported claims, not verified savings from an operating facility.

An August 2025 Building Design + Construction roundup gives different figures: 94% less water and 60% less energy than an air-cooled chiller. Its comparison basis differs from the launch announcement, and the available information does not explain the methodologies behind either set of figures. They should not be combined or treated as a settled, like-for-like result.

A fair comparison would need to identify the baseline system and compare the same facility loads, climate and operating conditions, cooling-energy boundary, and water-use accounting. The cited material does not supply enough detail to make that numerical comparison.

Project status: planned in 2025, current status unverified

Building Design + Construction reported on August 12, 2025, that HD/AC was planned for the TPC Data Center in Laurel, Maryland, which was then in design. That report is a snapshot of the project at that time; it does not establish whether the facility has since been built, commissioned, or put into operation.

The available sources do not document independent field results or confirmed operating savings. Shumate’s Director of Mechanical Engineering, Justin Penrod, characterized HD/AC as a “system” solution rather than a product and said it was designed to accommodate air-cooled loads alongside future direct-liquid-cooled infrastructure. That description helps clarify the intended role, but does not establish deployment outcomes.

What a data-center operator should take away

  • It addresses mixed cooling loads. The stated design combines 68°F water for air-cooled CRAC systems and 90°F water for direct-to-chip cooling.
  • It is an integrated facility concept. Its suitability depends on a project’s IT loads, cooling architecture, local outdoor conditions, and engineering requirements—not a consumer-style product comparison.
  • The savings remain claims. Shumate’s published percentages lack an independently reported test protocol and complete baseline methodology in the cited coverage.
  • Patent status is not a performance test. The patent number identifies a granted patent; it does not, by itself, demonstrate energy or water savings in a deployed data center.
