Monero, Firo, and Dash are the clearest privacy-focused alternatives to Zcash in current project documentation, but they work differently. Monero makes transaction privacy mandatory; Firo offers private Spark payments that its official wallets describe as the default; Dash has an optional shielded pool on its Evolution Platform. The key choice is whether privacy is automatic or optional, what transaction details are hidden, and what becomes visible when funds enter or leave a privacy feature.
How do the privacy options compare?
| Cryptocurrency | Privacy model | What project documentation says is hidden | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monero (XMR) | Transaction privacy is mandatory by protocol. | Its project overview describes RingCT, stealth addresses, and ring signatures as privacy technologies, and says RingCT hides transaction amounts. Monero Project overview | The overview also lists network-related tools, but does not quantify their effectiveness or establish that all network metadata is hidden. |
| Firo (FIRO), using Spark | Private Spark payments; Firo says Spark is the default in official wallets. | Firo says Spark hides the sender, recipient, and amount from public ledger observers. It also supports view keys for selective disclosure. Firo’s privacy page | Firo’s guide gives Spark a bounded membership set of 215, or 32,768 coins (Firo, 2026)—not a count of active users or a guarantee that every payment has that many plausible participants. Firo’s comparison guide |
| Dash (DASH), using the Evolution Platform shielded pool | Optional shielding within the pool. | Dash documentation says transfers inside the pool conceal parties and amounts. The pool uses Orchard, the shielded protocol also used by Zcash’s current shielded pool. Dash Platform shielded-pool documentation | Pool use and the amounts entering or leaving it are visible; privacy depends on other notes in the pool. |
| Zcash (ZEC), as the comparison point | Transparent and shielded transaction paths are available. | Shielded transactions conceal transaction details; transparent transactions expose public ledger details. Firo’s comparison guide discusses Zcash alongside other privacy coins. Firo’s comparison guide | Whether a transaction is shielded depends on the path used and wallet behavior. A shielded capability does not mean every transaction is shielded. |
Which cryptocurrency is private by default?
Monero: mandatory transaction privacy
Monero’s project overview says minimum ring-signature sizes were set so that all transactions are private by mandate. It also describes stealth addresses and RingCT as part of its transaction-privacy design. That makes Monero different from a system where a user chooses whether to send through a shielded pool. Monero Project overview
The project overview lists Tor and I2P transactions and Dandelion++ among its privacy technologies. Those features address network privacy concerns, which are distinct from what transaction data the ledger reveals; the overview does not quantify protection against network-level observation. Avoid treating a feature list as proof of absolute anonymity.
Firo: private Spark payments as the official-wallet default
Firo says Spark has been live on mainnet since 18 January 2024. Its privacy page describes Spark as a protocol for direct private payments and says that official wallets make private payments the default. Firo also describes view keys as a way to share transaction information selectively. These are descriptions of Firo’s own implementation, not independent guarantees about every use case. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 32,768-coin membership-set figure is a protocol bound reported by Firo, not the number of people using Spark or the effective anonymity set for an individual payment. Firo’s guide describes overlapping windows for the sets, so that bound should not be read as a simple head count of interchangeable participants. Firo’s comparison guide
Dash: shielding is an explicit option
Dash’s shielded pool is an optional privacy layer on its Evolution Platform, rather than a blanket privacy setting for all Dash activity. Dash documentation says the pool became available at protocol version 12 and uses Orchard, also used by Zcash’s current shielded pool. Dash announced that shielded transactions were live on the Evolution mainnet on 4 August 2026. Dash Platform documentation Dash’s 4 August 2026 announcement

Dash documents visible boundaries around the pool: observers can identify whether a transaction is a shield, unshield, or transfer; amounts entering or leaving are visible; and Layer 1 transactions on either side are not shielded by the pool. The privacy available within the pool also depends on how many other notes are present. This means a private transfer inside the pool does not make the transition into or out of it private.
What does “private” actually protect?
A cryptocurrency’s privacy model can protect different parts of a transaction, and those protections should not be conflated:

- On-chain transaction data: whether observers can connect a sender, recipient, amount, or related transactions on the public ledger.
- Network metadata: information such as IP addresses and timing that may be exposed while a transaction is broadcast. Ledger privacy alone does not establish protection here.
- Entry and exit activity: whether moving funds into or out of a privacy pool creates visible amounts or links between transactions.
- Disclosure to others: whether a wallet or protocol supports a way to reveal selected transaction information, as Firo says Spark view keys do.
- Dependencies outside the protocol: wallet, frontend, relayer, exchange, or payment-recipient practices that can affect practical privacy.
For example, Dash’s documentation expressly describes visible shield and unshield transitions, while Monero’s listed network tools concern a different privacy surface from its on-chain transaction design. A coin’s privacy label alone cannot answer both questions.
How should you choose an alternative?
- Decide whether privacy should be automatic. Monero’s transaction privacy is mandatory by protocol. Firo’s official wallets describe Spark payments as the default. Dash shielding is optional, as are Zcash’s transparent and shielded paths.
- Check which details matter to your use. Compare sender, recipient, amount, transaction links, and network metadata separately rather than relying on a single anonymity ranking.
- Consider visible transitions and the privacy set. A pool can conceal activity inside it while leaving deposits and withdrawals visible. A stated set size is not proof of how many active, plausible participants a particular transaction has.
- Check the wallet and service you actually plan to use. Protocol capability does not establish that a particular wallet, exchange, merchant, or jurisdiction supports the asset or privacy feature. Availability and legal status require a current, country-specific check.
What these comparisons do not establish
The project sources describe protocol designs and deployment status; they do not provide a current, independent comparison of effective anonymity, transaction volume, market access, exchange coverage, merchant acceptance, or legal status by country. Nor do they establish that any option provides perfect privacy. Treat project descriptions as accounts of each project’s own design, not as a guarantee for every transaction or situation.

There is no single best alternative for every privacy need. If mandatory transaction privacy is the priority, Monero’s documented model is the most direct fit. If selective disclosure or a private-payment default in Firo’s official wallets matters more, compare Spark’s design and wallet behavior. If you want to use Dash’s Evolution Platform, evaluate the shielded pool with its visible entry and exit boundaries in mind.
