First find where the controller stops being recognized: by the PC’s connection, by Steam, or by one particular game. That distinction points to the right fix. A game may not support controllers at all, while a connection or Steam configuration issue can prevent a supported game from receiving input.
Find where the controller disappears
Check the scope before changing settings. Does the controller fail to connect, does Steam fail to list it, or does it work in Steam but not in a specific game? Also note whether the issue occurs over USB, Bluetooth, or both, and whether it affects one game or several.
- Not connected to the PC: troubleshoot the cable, USB port, pairing mode, charge, or Bluetooth support.
- Connected but missing from Steam: check Steam’s controller settings and isolate competing devices or software.
- Visible in Steam but not in one game: check the game’s controller support and its input configuration.
Confirm the game supports controllers
Not every Steam game accepts gamepad input. Steam’s Big Picture mode guide distinguishes Full Controller Support from Partial Controller Support. Full means you can download, launch, and play the title using only a controller. Partial means a controller may work during play, but you may still need a mouse or keyboard for installation, configuration, or parts of the interface.
If Steam detects the controller but only one game ignores it, start with that game’s support status and official instructions. Steam’s recognition of a device does not mean every game will accept it.

Check whether Steam detects the controller
Open Steam’s controller settings and look for the device in the detected-controller list. Use the available test or configuration tools to check whether button presses register. Steam’s controller troubleshooting guide provides the relevant checks.
If Steam lists and responds to the controller, the connection is reaching Steam; focus next on game support, the controller configuration, and overlays. If Steam does not list it, check the connection before troubleshooting an individual game.

Check the USB or Bluetooth connection
For a USB connection
- Close the game, unplug the controller, then reconnect it firmly.
- Try another USB port. If you are using a hub, connect directly to the PC as a diagnostic test.
- If possible, test with another cable that matches the controller’s connector and supports data, not just charging.
- If the problem changes with the port or with other devices plugged in, disconnect unnecessary USB peripherals and test again.
Steam’s USB connection and contention help describes how USB scheduling or contention can contribute to intermittent disconnections or port-dependent behavior. Testing another computer, if available, can help determine whether the problem follows the controller.
For Bluetooth
- Charge the controller, then put it into its Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Make sure the controller model supports Bluetooth; a wireless controller is not necessarily a Bluetooth controller.
- Check that it appears as a Bluetooth device and is connected, not merely discoverable or paired.
- If it still does not connect, test it with another host, if available, to see whether the problem follows the controller.

Check Steam Input and overlays
When Steam sees the controller but a game does not, verify Steam’s controller settings and the configuration available for that game. Check that the Steam Overlay is enabled where relevant. Steam Support says, “The Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality.” This guidance applies specifically to Steam Controller troubleshooting, not as a universal explanation for every gamepad issue.
Restart Steam and the game after changing settings. Steam also identifies third-party software and external launcher overlays as possible conflicts. Temporarily disable them to test, then restore them if they are not responsible.

Isolate other input devices
Another controller or input device can interfere with the one you are testing. Steam recommends isolating devices using this approach in its input-device troubleshooting guide:
- Close the game and disconnect other controllers and unnecessary input devices.
- Reconnect only the controller you want to test, then relaunch the game.
- If it works, reconnect the other devices one at a time until the problem returns.
- For a device that triggers the failure, consider updating or disabling its driver as Steam suggests.
When the game is not on Steam
The Steam menus and troubleshooting guidance above apply to Steam. For a game launched through another store or launcher, consult the game publisher’s and controller maker’s current official instructions rather than assuming Steam-specific settings or labels apply.

If the controller is not detected across games or applications, continue isolating the connection and device. The steps here do not establish a Windows-wide Device Manager procedure, so use the controller maker’s official support guidance for model-specific Windows troubleshooting.
