To target a portable SSD’s advertised maximum of up to 2,000 MB/s, the drive, computer port and cable must all support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps). A USB-C connector alone does not tell you the port’s data speed. For Samsung’s T9, UASP must also be enabled for its maximum sequential read/write claim.
What port do you need?
Look for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 or explicit USB 20 Gbps support in the computer’s specifications. USB-IF describes USB 3.2’s two-lane mode as using two 10 Gbps lanes for a 20 Gbps transfer rate. See USB-IF’s USB 3.2 overview.
The connector shape is not the speed specification: USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed data rate. Check the exact port’s supported mode in the computer’s documentation rather than assuming that any USB-C port can run a Gen 2×2 drive at full interface speed.
What cable do you need?
Use a cable specified for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 / 20 Gbps. Samsung says both the host and connecting cable must support Gen 2×2 for the T9’s maximum sequential speeds; Kingston recommends using the XS2000’s included cable and checking the specifications of a replacement. A USB-C plug or a high charging-wattage rating does not establish the cable’s data rate.

If the original cable is available, start with it. If replacing it, verify its data specification. A faster cable cannot increase the capability of a port that supports a slower USB mode.
Does the SSD itself support 2,000 MB/s?
The drive must support the same interface. Samsung’s T9 and Kingston’s XS2000 are examples of USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 portable SSDs advertised at up to 2,000 MB/s. Samsung’s T9 product specifications qualify the maximum sequential read/write claim by host configuration, cable and UASP. Kingston’s XS2000 datasheet lists USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and up to 2,000 MB/s read and write.

Will USB4 or Thunderbolt run a Gen 2×2 drive at full speed?
Do not rely on the USB4 or Thunderbolt label alone. USB-IF says USB4 connections scale to the best mutual capability of the connected devices. Kingston identifies the XS2000 as a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 drive, not a Thunderbolt drive, and says performance on USB4 or Thunderbolt depends on the host specifications. Check the particular computer’s documentation for the relevant USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 support and compatibility details. See USB-IF’s USB4 overview and Kingston’s XS2000 support information.
What does “up to 2,000 MB/s” mean?
It is a qualified product maximum, not a guarantee that every computer or file transfer will sustain that rate. Samsung describes up to 2,000 MB/s sequential read/write, notes that performance may vary with host configuration and requires UASP for its maximum claim. The manufacturer’s figure is not an independent benchmark, and real results depend on the drive, host, cable, protocol and workload.

For Samsung T9 users, the manufacturer’s requirement is specific: enable UASP as well as using a Gen 2×2-capable host and cable. Consult Samsung’s T9 support information for product guidance.

- The port negotiates a slower mode. USB 3.2 Gen 1 is 5 Gbps and Gen 2 is 10 Gbps; the XS2000’s full 20 Gbps interface is Gen 2×2. A slower mode limits the available link bandwidth.
- The cable does not support the needed data mode. Try the supplied cable, or confirm the replacement’s data-rate specification.
- The drive or host does not support Gen 2×2. Check both product specifications; connector shape alone cannot confirm compatibility.
- UASP is not enabled. This is a stated requirement for Samsung’s T9 maximum sequential read/write claim.
- System software needs attention. Kingston recommends checking system firmware, chipset and USB driver updates.
Start by confirming the SSD interface, then verify the computer port and cable, and check UASP for a T9. If those specifications align and performance remains unexpectedly low, follow the drive and computer makers’ support guidance for that specific setup.
