Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo fix poor performance in a dark fantasy PC game, first identify whether you have consistently low frame rates, brief stutters, slow loading, visual glitches, or crashes. Then check the game’s current official requirements, test one graphics setting at a time, and note whether the problem started after a patch, driver change, or settings change. The symptom and timing help narrow down the cause; no single adjustment is a reliable fix for every game.
Start by identifying the problem
“Lag” can describe several different issues. Separate them before changing settings, because a solution that helps with loading may not help with low frame rates or stuttering.
- Consistently low FPS: The game feels slow much of the time, particularly in demanding areas.
- Intermittent stutter or hitching: The game pauses briefly or feels uneven despite otherwise acceptable performance.
- Long loading: Starting the game, loading a save, or entering a new area takes a long time.
- Visual glitches or crashes: These may call for game-specific support rather than routine graphics tuning.
Write down the game and version, your PC’s CPU, graphics card and RAM, display resolution, graphics preset, and when the problem began. Note whether it appeared after a game update, graphics-driver change, or change to resolution or advanced settings. Also check whether other games have the same issue. These observations are clues, not proof of a particular cause.
Check the game’s requirements against your target
Use the current official requirements for the exact game, rather than a generic definition of a gaming PC. Requirements can describe different targets: a minimum configuration is not necessarily intended to deliver the same resolution, quality, or frame rate as a higher tier.

For example, Blizzard’s 2023 Diablo IV launch requirements listed these PC targets. They are launch specifications, not a statement of the game’s latest requirements in 2026 or a benchmark for other games.
| Diablo IV launch tier | Published target | Other listed requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 1080p native resolution / 720p render resolution, low settings, 30 FPS | 8 GB RAM; DirectX 12; SSD with 90 GB available; named older CPU and GPU classes |
| Medium | 1080p, medium settings, 60 FPS | 16 GB RAM; DirectX 12; SSD with 90 GB available; named CPU and GPU classes |
| High | 1080p, high settings, 60 FPS | 16 GB RAM; DirectX 12; SSD with 90 GB available; newer named CPU and GPU classes |
| Ultra 4K | 4K, ultra settings, 60 FPS | 32 GB RAM; DirectX 12; SSD with 90 GB available; higher GPU class |
Blizzard cautioned that Diablo IV may run below its minimum specifications but that the experience may be significantly diminished; its examples include an HDD, a dual-core CPU, or integrated graphics. Treat those warnings as specific to Diablo IV. For any game, compare your components with the current requirements and the resolution and quality level you actually want.

Test graphics settings one at a time
Use the same repeatable scene—such as the same location or encounter—to compare performance before and after a change. Lower resolution or reduce a demanding visual option, test again, and record what changed. Avoid changing several settings at once: if performance improves, you will not know which adjustment mattered.
- Record the current resolution, preset, and any advanced options you changed.
- Lower one demanding setting or reduce resolution.
- Repeat the same scene and compare how it feels and, if available, the displayed frame rate.
- Restore the setting if it makes no useful difference, then test a different option.
An improvement after lowering resolution or a graphics option suggests that graphics workload may contribute, but it does not establish that the GPU is the only limit. In a Microsoft technical article updated on August 19, 2020, Microsoft describes CPU limits as common in its reviewed PC games and explains that high-resolution settings can increase GPU demand. That is useful context, not a diagnosis of your particular PC: Microsoft Learn: Top Issues for Windows Titles.

Check ray tracing if the game offers it
Ray tracing can add a substantial graphics workload. If the problem began after enabling it—or after an update—turn it off temporarily and test the same scene. Check the game’s current patch notes and support guidance before treating an old example as current advice.
For context, Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring version 1.09 notes warned that ray tracing could have become enabled by default after that update. The publisher advised switching ray-tracing quality to OFF if it was unintentionally enabled and affecting gameplay, checking the PC’s ray-tracing environment requirements, and ensuring graphics drivers were current. Those instructions and the hardware specifications on that page are tied to version 1.09; they are not universal or current requirements for every game.

Handle stuttering differently from low FPS
Some stuttering is associated with shader compilation: the game or driver prepares shader data needed to render effects. Microsoft’s technical discussion describes driver shader compilation as a potential processing cost, but it does not provide a universal player-side fix. A shader-related explanation is only one possibility; use the specific game’s current support guidance.
Square Enix documents one game-specific procedure for a game that stutters despite meeting its recommended PC specifications. Its support article says a shader cache is created after installing and playing for the first time. For the game covered there, it instructs players to open System > Graphics, switch Compile Shader on, and return to the title screen. The article estimates 35–90 minutes for compilation depending on PC specifications, and says the GPU shader cache must be enabled. Check that game’s current menu and support instructions before following the procedure: Square Enix Support: The game stutters despite meeting the recommended PC specifications.

Do not repeatedly clear shader caches as a blanket remedy. A cleared cache may need to be rebuilt, and the cited guidance does not recommend routine cache clearing for all games.
Check storage, drivers, and background activity
Storage: an SSD may help with a requirement or loading
Check whether the game’s official requirements specify an SSD, and whether your installation has enough free space. Blizzard listed an SSD and 90 GB available for every Diablo IV launch PC tier. That is a game-specific launch requirement; it does not show that an SSD will fix CPU- or GPU-limited low frame rates or shader stutter. Consider storage when the game is installed on an HDD or does not meet its stated storage requirement, not as a guaranteed FPS upgrade.
Drivers and background applications
Valve’s Steam Support troubleshooting page recommends removing unnecessary startup applications and checking CPU, GPU, and audio drivers. This is broad triage guidance, not a promise of higher FPS. Close only applications you recognize and do not need while playing; check the current driver guidance from the relevant hardware maker or game support if an issue began after a driver update. Valve’s guidance is available at Steam Support: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.
Quick Recap
Use the pattern to choose your next step
- Only one game is affected: Check that game’s current requirements, patch notes, settings, and official support channel.
- Several games are affected: Check shared factors such as drivers, background applications, and whether the PC meets the games’ requirements.
- Performance changed after an update: Look for current notes about graphics options or known issues before applying advice written for an older version.
- Lowering a graphics setting helps: Keep the improved setting if the visual trade-off is acceptable, and compare your hardware with the game’s requirements for your chosen target.
- No setting change helps, or the game crashes or shows visual corruption: Consult the game’s current official support channel instead of assuming a hardware upgrade is needed.
