Before buying a construction stock, check how the company handles cyclical demand, project-cost overruns, uncertain backlog, labor and materials pressure, public-contract exposure, and cash and financing needs. Apply the checklist to the company’s latest annual and quarterly filings: construction businesses differ substantially by end market, geography, contract terms, and funding source, so no single risk profile describes the sector.
Start with the company’s exposure to construction demand
Construction demand can shift with interest rates, inflation, access to financing, customer conditions, and public budgets. The impact depends on what the company sells and where it operates: a materials producer, homebuilder, and infrastructure contractor do not necessarily respond to the same economic changes.
Identify the company’s main end markets—such as residential building, nonresidential construction, infrastructure, utilities, materials, or engineering services—and then look for customer, project, and geographic concentration. A downturn or funding delay concentrated in one region, customer, or market can matter more than a broad sector trend.
Martin Marietta says demand for construction materials can be affected by elevated interest rates, inflation, affordability, private investment, and tighter credit. It also identifies public funding and project-letting schedules as drivers of infrastructure activity. In its fiscal 2025 reporting, residential and nonresidential construction markets together accounted for 58% of its aggregates shipments. That is Martin Marietta’s company-specific figure, not a sector-wide statistic. Martin Marietta Materials, 2025 Form 10-K.

Check who bears the risk when project costs rise
Read what the company discloses about its contract mix. Relevant arrangements can include fixed-price, fixed-unit-price, cost-reimbursable, and time-and-materials contracts. A fixed-price agreement may leave the contractor responsible for costs above its estimate, while the customer pays the agreed price. Actual results still depend on the contract’s terms and the company’s ability to estimate, manage, and deliver the work.
Look for disclosures about inaccurate bids, labor productivity, project delays, change orders, claims, and recognized contract losses. Sterling Infrastructure warns that inaccurate cost estimates or failure to complete work within those estimates can reduce profitability or cause losses. Granite Construction also identifies inflation, tariffs, inefficiency, and incorrect assumptions as possible sources of higher project costs. These disclosures identify risks, not proof that a particular project will lose money. Sterling Infrastructure, 2025 Form 10-K; Granite Construction, 2025 Form 10-K.

Compare project outcomes and margins over time rather than assuming one contract type is always safer. Escalation clauses, change-order rights, estimating discipline, and project controls can alter how much cost risk the contractor actually carries.
Test whether backlog is likely to become profitable revenue
Backlog is a measure defined by each issuer; it is not automatically guaranteed, funded, or profitable revenue. Read the company’s definition and check whether listed projects have been awarded, funded, permitted, and released to proceed. Then examine expected start dates, conversion to revenue, cancellations, scope reductions, delays, and whether acquisitions contributed to backlog growth.

Tutor Perini describes backlog as awarded work but cautions that projects may be cancelled or reduced, that reported backlog may not become revenue, and that completed work may not be profitable. At December 31, 2025, it reported approximately $20.6 billion of uncompleted construction backlog and estimated that about $6 billion—approximately 29%—would be recognized as 2026 revenue. This is the company’s dated estimate, not a sector benchmark or assurance of completion or profit. Tutor Perini, 2025 Form 10-K.
Assess labor, materials, suppliers, and subcontractors
Execution depends on getting people and inputs when needed and at costs the contract can absorb. Check disclosures on labor availability and wages, materials and fuel prices, tariffs, energy costs, supplier disruptions, and subcontractor capacity. A shortage or price increase can affect both the cost of current work and the company’s ability to bid competitively for future projects.

Look for contract escalation clauses or other cost pass-through provisions, and assess whether the company can secure supplies and qualified subcontractors. Sterling Infrastructure identifies supplier and subcontractor dependence as a potential source of cost increases and shortages that can affect margins and bidding capacity. For companies that rely on public customers, look at the source and timing of appropriations, procurement delays, payment timing, audit exposure, termination rights, and consequences of performance failures. A project can be delayed or affected by funding and contract decisions even when the underlying infrastructure need remains.

Granite reported that about 70% of its fiscal 2025 construction revenue was funded by federal, state, and local agencies and authorities. That figure describes Granite’s own business mix; it should not be treated as typical of construction stocks. Tutor Perini’s disclosures also illustrate how government-customer decisions and contract termination or funding provisions can affect project timing and backlog. Granite Construction, 2025 Form 10-K; Tutor Perini, 2025 Form 10-K.
Look beyond earnings to cash, debt, and bonding capacity
Compare operating cash flow with reported earnings and follow working capital, receivables, contract assets, retainage, capital spending, debt maturities, interest expense, and liquidity. Construction companies may have to pay project costs before receiving customer payments, so timing and collection matter as well as the profit recorded on a project.
Also check whether bonding or collateral requirements could limit the company’s ability to take on additional work. Quanta Services identifies surety-provider decisions, collateral costs, liquidity, and cash needs for debt service and operations among its financing risks and requirements. No single debt or cash-flow threshold in these company disclosures applies to every contractor; assess obligations, cash conversion, project risk, and financing access together. Quanta Services, 2025 Form 10-K.
Compare construction companies on the same risk dimensions
When evaluating multiple issuers, use comparable questions rather than relying on backlog size or earnings alone. The dimensions below are analytical guidance drawn from company disclosures, not a regulator-issued scoring framework.

Use current filings and keep the figures in context
The company examples and figures in this guide come from fiscal 2025 annual-report disclosures available as of October 7, 2026. Risk factors describe possible outcomes; they are not forecasts that a loss will occur. Because filings can change, check the issuer’s latest annual and quarterly reports before making an investment decision.
