Make small changes until ordinary hand movements move the pointer where you need it without repeated lifting or overshooting. There is no single DPI setting that works for everyone: mouse hardware, operating-system settings, screen size, and personal preference all affect the result.
Start with pointer movement speed
Pointer speed is the setting most likely to need attention when you change mouse shape. Depending on your mouse, you can adjust tracking speed with a button or companion software on the device, through your operating system, or both. Keep the operating-system setting steady while you test the mouse’s own control; changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell what helped.
- Connect the mouse and find its controls. Check for a tracking-speed button or the manufacturer’s software for your exact model.
- Begin at a comfortable middle or default speed. Move the pointer across your usual work area using ordinary hand movements.
- Adjust in small steps. Aim for enough screen coverage without repeatedly lifting the mouse or overshooting targets.
- Change only one speed control at a time. If the mouse has its own tracking-speed setting, assess it before changing the operating-system pointer speed.
DPI is a device-level tracking measure, not a universal target for vertical mice. For example, Logitech documents an adjustable 4000-DPI sensor for the MX Vertical and default cursor-speed presets of 1000 and 1600 DPI. These are options for that model, not recommended settings for every person. Logitech says the MX Vertical’s speed can be adjusted through Logitech Options; the available software and controls vary by model. See Logitech’s MX Vertical setup guide for its controls.
Should you change pointer acceleration?
Not automatically. Windows calls its relevant option “Enhance pointer precision.” Microsoft describes it as helping pointer accuracy when the mouse moves slowly, but its documentation does not prescribe a setting for switching to a vertical mouse. Leave the option as it is while you get used to the new device. If movement feels inconsistent, compare both settings using tasks you actually do, such as selecting text or navigating between screen edges.

Windows settings paths
In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse to find pointer speed, “Enhance pointer precision,” primary-button selection, and scrolling controls. Additional mouse settings include double-click speed. Microsoft also documents mouse controls under Settings > Devices > Mouse in Windows 10. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so that older path may not reflect the current experience for every reader. Microsoft’s mouse settings help page covers these controls.
Leave other settings alone unless there is a reason
A vertical shape does not by itself require changes to button assignment, double-click speed, or scrolling. Adjust these only if the new mouse behaves poorly for your setup or a setting does not suit your work.

- Primary button: Change its side if your handedness or setup requires it.
- Double-click speed: Adjust it only if double-clicks are being missed or registered unintentionally.
- Scrolling: Change scroll speed if the wheel feels too fast or too slow.
- Extra buttons: Remap them to actions you actually use; customization is optional.
For the MX Vertical, Logitech says tracking speed and individual buttons can be customized in Logi Options+ on Windows and macOS. Check the support information for your own mouse before relying on a particular app or control.

Logitech’s MX Vertical guide advises keeping the hand in a natural, relaxed position and avoiding unnecessary wrist extension. Treat this as manufacturer use guidance, not evidence that a particular setting will relieve pain or prevent injury. A mouse setting alone cannot be promised to resolve symptoms.
