To check whether a Nintendo Switch game will work on your console, identify the exact console model and game edition, then consult Nintendo’s compatibility lookup if you’re checking a Switch game for Nintendo Switch 2. Read any notes about controllers, accessories, or limited features—not just whether the game is listed. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, but some titles may not be supported or fully compatible.
1. Identify your console and the exact game edition
First, confirm which console you have: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2. Then note the game’s full title and the platform or edition printed on its package or store listing. A title marked “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” is different from the original Nintendo Switch version.
This distinction matters because compatibility is title-specific. A general statement about Switch games working on Switch 2 does not guarantee that every game, mode, or accessory will work as expected.
2. Check a Nintendo Switch game for Switch 2 compatibility

Search for the exact game title. Check that the result matches your game, rather than a similarly named title or a different edition.

Read the listed status and any notes about limitations, controllers, accessories, or features. Nintendo says support information may change as it tests games and issues updates.

If the game was published by another company and its status is unclear, contact that game’s publisher for title-specific guidance, as Nintendo advises.
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance warns that some Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Switch 2. The lookup is therefore more useful than assuming all games from the previous console generation behave alike.

3. Check for controller and accessory requirements
A game can be playable while a particular feature or setup still requires an original Nintendo Switch controller or accessory. Nintendo’s examples include:

Ring Fit Adventure: Nintendo says it can be played on Switch 2 by attaching original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con to the included Ring-Con. Joy-Con 2 do not attach to that accessory.

1-2-Switch: Features using the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require an original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (R).

Nintendo Labo kits: Nintendo lists physical fit or controller requirements for kits and notes that the experience may differ.

These are examples, not a complete list of games with special requirements. Check the notes for your own title in Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console. Nintendo also says you need a Switch console or a compatible charging accessory to charge them. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2, so do not assume that older hardware or accessories will carry over unchanged.
4. Confirm whether you have a physical card or digital copy
Switch 2 can use compatible physical Nintendo Switch game cards, and compatible digital Switch games can be downloaded through the Nintendo Account that owns them. For a digital game, check that the correct account or license is available on the console where you plan to play. Nintendo describes virtual game cards for use across up to two consoles, as well as online-access conditions for other consoles, in its digital game and console guidance.
Having a game card or seeing a digital purchase in an account does not remove title-specific compatibility limits. Check the game in Nintendo’s lookup as well as confirming that you can access the copy.

5. Separate base-game compatibility from Switch 2 Edition features
A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is the original game bundled with an upgrade pack. Depending on the title, the pack may add visual improvements, features, or modes; contents vary by game. The added Switch 2 Edition features are playable only on Switch 2.
Some owners of select physical or digital Switch games can buy an upgrade pack for that title. An upgrade is not necessary simply to play the original game, and not every Switch game has one. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition and upgrade-pack information for the specific game if you want its enhanced features.
