When your equity portfolio falls, pause before making a fear-driven trade. Check whether your goals, time horizon, cash needs, or ability to tolerate risk have changed; compare your current holdings with your intended allocation; and consider fees and taxes before selling or rebalancing. A market decline alone does not prove that your plan is wrong.

What should I check first?

Start with the plan, not the latest market headline. Ask whether anything important has changed besides prices:

  • Your goal and time horizon: When will you need the money, and has that date changed?
  • Cash-flow needs: Do you expect withdrawals soon, or has your need for readily available cash increased?
  • Risk tolerance and capacity: Can you financially withstand further losses, and are you still comfortable with the possibility?
  • Portfolio construction: Is the decline affecting a broad range of holdings, or is one concentrated position driving much of the loss?
  • Allocation: How does your current mix compare with the allocation you intended to hold?

Investor.gov explains that time horizon and risk tolerance are relevant to asset-allocation decisions, and that market movements can cause a portfolio to drift from its intended risk level. A broad market decline and a steep fall in one holding are different situations; review the underlying holdings rather than assuming they call for the same response. See the SEC’s asset-allocation and diversification guide.

Should I sell my stocks or move the portfolio to cash?

Do not move everything to cash solely because prices have fallen. Selling after a decline can leave you out of a subsequent recovery, although no historical pattern guarantees that markets will recover on a particular schedule or that any portfolio will regain its value.

Vanguard analyzed a specific historical scenario: from January 1980 through December 2023, it compared a balanced portfolio of 60% stocks and 40% bonds that remained invested with one moved to 100% cash after a three-month period in which equities fell at least 10%. In that analysis, the cash portfolio underperformed the balanced portfolio 74% of the time over the following three months, 71% over six months, and 87% over 12 months. Average underperformance was 4.1%, 7.4%, and 13.3%, respectively. These are results for that portfolio, event definition, comparison, and historical period—not a forecast or a universal outcome. Read Vanguard’s explanation and methodology.

Cash may still be relevant to an individual’s near-term spending needs, but that is a cash-flow decision, not a market-timing conclusion. Consider when the money is due and whether your existing plan accounts for it before changing investments.

When can rebalancing make sense?

Rebalancing is a way to bring a portfolio back toward an intended allocation; it is not a prediction about what markets will do next. If your goals and risk tolerance remain consistent with that allocation, SEC guidance describes several ways to rebalance:

  • Sell some of the investment categories that have grown above their intended weights.
  • Buy categories that have fallen below their intended weights.
  • Direct new contributions toward underweighted categories, where applicable.

There is no single schedule established here as right for every investor. Check any rules in your investment plan, and weigh transaction fees and tax consequences before making trades. The SEC’s guide to asset allocation, diversification, and rebalancing explains these approaches.

Does diversification prevent losses?

No. Diversification spreads exposure across investments and can reduce reliance on a narrow set of holdings, but it cannot ensure a profit or prevent losses. Vanguard states: “Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.”

Also check what your funds actually own. Several funds can hold similar assets, so the number of funds in an account does not by itself show how diversified the portfolio is. Investor.gov discusses the limits and purpose of diversification in its investor education guide.

What changes if I am nearing retirement or withdrawing money?

A portfolio that must fund near-term spending faces different cash-flow constraints from one intended for a distant goal. Review how much you expect to withdraw, when the money is needed, and whether your existing spending and investment plan remains workable. Time horizon, liquidity needs, and capacity to withstand losses all matter; a generic allocation or withdrawal percentage should not be treated as suitable for everyone.

Vanguard’s educational discussion addresses spending adjustments and asset selection when withdrawals are needed, but its examples are not universal withdrawal rules. If a decision could affect essential spending or has significant tax implications, consider qualified individualized financial or tax advice. Investor.gov also advises considering costs and consulting a professional about ways to minimize them.

What costs should I check before selling or rebalancing?

Review potential transaction fees and tax consequences before acting. The tax result depends on your circumstances and jurisdiction, so a general market FAQ cannot determine what a particular sale would mean for you. The SEC recommends considering these costs and notes that a financial professional or tax adviser may help identify ways to minimize them. See the SEC guide.

How can I make the decision without relying on a market forecast?

Use the same decision checks whether markets are rising or falling. Compare the available choices against your circumstances rather than trying to predict the next move:

  • How soon is the money needed?
  • Can you tolerate additional losses, both financially and emotionally?
  • How far has the current allocation moved from the one you intended?
  • What liquidity and withdrawals does your plan require?
  • Are your holdings concentrated or overlapping?
  • What fees or tax consequences could a change create?

These are relevant considerations, not a formula that produces an individualized recommendation. For practical guidance on resisting panic and following a plan, see Investor.gov’s “Don’t Panic, Plan It!”.
