Before you buy a product someone recommended on Amazon, verify the exact item and seller, read recent reviews for details rather than relying on the star average, and cross-check important claims against other customer feedback and impartial expert reviews. Treat suspicious review patterns as a reason to investigate—not as proof that a particular review is fake.
How to verify an Amazon product recommendation before you buy
- Open the exact Amazon listing. Check that the link leads to the same product, model, size, and variation discussed in the recommendation. Product versions can differ, so feedback about a similar-looking item may not apply. Read the product information and identify the seller shown for the offer you are considering. The FTC advises marketplace shoppers to check individual sellers and read recent buyer comments (FTC marketplace guidance).
- Read recent reviews, not just the rating. Look for comments that describe actual use, relevant features, and shortcomings. Consider where the review appears, who wrote it, and the reviewer’s history. The FTC cautions that ratings and reviews can be fake or misleading, including positive and negative reviews; a high average alone cannot establish that reviews are authentic or that the product suits you (FTC online-shopping guidance; FTC guidance on evaluating reviews).
- Cross-check the recommendation elsewhere. Compare customer feedback on more than one retailer or review site, and look for trusted expert reviews that explain their evaluation and are impartial. A second source can help test a recommendation’s specific claims; it is not a guarantee that every source is accurate. The FTC recommends considering a variety of sources and identifying where review information comes from (FTC guidance on evaluating reviews).
- Separate product performance from seller service. A product review can help assess features, build quality, or performance. Comments about shipping, communication, and order handling address the seller or transaction instead. Amazon’s seller policy distinguishes product reviews from misplaced seller feedback and expects reviews to reflect genuine product feedback (Amazon Customer product reviews policies).
- Check for possible review manipulation. Be cautious about patterns such as requests for positive reviews or review changes, or offers of compensation connected to a review. Amazon’s U.S. seller policy prohibits examples including compensated reviews, refunds conditioned on reviews, seller or competitor reviews, and requests to change or remove reviews. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, effective October 21, 2024, addresses specified deceptive practices, including fake reviews and incentives conditioned on positive or negative sentiment. A suspicious clue is a prompt to corroborate—not proof that an individual review broke a rule (Amazon policy; FTC rule and Q&A).
- Decide against your own requirements. Compare the recommendation’s claims with evidence from the listing, customer feedback, and expert reviews, then weigh them against the features you actually need. Before ordering, recheck the product and seller details and keep your purchase records, as the FTC advises online shoppers (FTC online-shopping guidance).
How do I know if Amazon reviews are real?
You generally cannot establish authenticity from a star rating or one review alone. Read the review’s specific account of use, consider the reviewer’s history and where the review was posted, and compare similar claims across independent sources. A cluster of vague praise, unusual requests, or incentives may warrant more checking, but the available clues do not prove that a particular review is fake.
Should you trust Amazon star ratings?
Use the average as a quick summary, not as a verdict. It does not tell you whether the reviews refer to the exact variation you plan to buy, whether they describe the qualities you care about, or whether they are genuine. Recent, specific comments and independent corroboration are more useful for judging fit and performance.
What Amazon and FTC review rules mean for shoppers
Amazon’s cited customer-review policy is written for sellers and applies to selling in the United States. It identifies prohibited conduct; it does not establish that any particular review violates the policy. Separately, the FTC rule covers specified deceptive review and testimonial practices, including certain undisclosed insider reviews, company-controlled review sites presented as independent, review suppression, and fake social-media indicators in covered circumstances. This is consumer guidance, not a legal determination about an individual seller or review (Amazon policy; FTC rule and Q&A).
