Neither wireless nor underwire bras are a proven universal winner for comfort, support, or fit. The best choice depends on how the whole bra fits, what you want it to do, and whether you are wearing it for everyday activities or exercise. The available studies do not provide a broad, controlled comparison of everyday wireless and underwire bras.
How wireless and underwire bras differ
An underwire bra uses a wire at the base of each cup to shape and support the breast. A wireless bra has no wire; its support instead comes from the garment’s cups, band, straps, fabric, and overall construction. Those design differences can affect the feel and silhouette, but they do not by themselves establish which bra will fit or support a particular wearer better.
When comparing them, consider the whole garment and your preferences: whether the cups and band fit, whether the straps stay comfortable, and whether you want a particular amount of lift, separation, or shaping. Those are individual fit and style questions, not outcomes established as universal advantages of either construction.
Comfort and fit depend on more than the wire
A study assessing 309 women’s own encapsulation-style bras found incorrect fit most often in the cups, front bands, and straps. Its finding is a reminder that discomfort cannot be diagnosed by the presence of an underwire alone: a poorly fitting cup, band, or strap can also be part of the problem. The study assessed fit components; it was not a head-to-head test of wireless and underwire bras.

If a bra feels uncomfortable, check whether the cups contain or cover the breast as intended, whether the band sits securely, and whether the straps remain comfortable. A professional fitting may help you assess sizing and construction, but a fitting does not guarantee that a particular bra will feel right for you.
What the back-pain study does—and does not—show
A 2024 study followed 24 larger-breasted women with chronic nonspecific back pain. Every participant’s usual bra failed the study’s fit assessment. After four weeks, participants in both the professionally fitted standard-bra group and the alternative wire-free garment group reported symptomatic relief. The alternative condition improved a greater number of reported outcome measures, but the study was small and specific to this population and comparison; it does not show that wireless bras generally prevent or treat back pain.

The study authors wrote, “Symptomatic relief may be associated with the resting position of the breast tissue on the anterior chest wall.” That proposed association is the authors’ interpretation of their results, not proof that one bra category is a treatment or that the finding applies to everyone.

Sports-bra research addresses breast movement during activity, not a general everyday contest between wireless and underwire bras. In a 2020 study involving 98 sports bras and 77 participants, reported breast-movement reduction ranged from 36% to 74%. In that study, encapsulation style, padded cups, nylon, an adjustable underband, and high neck drop together accounted for 37.1% of the variance in movement reduction. These are findings about the tested sports bras and conditions, not all wireless or underwire designs.

Another study compared five sports bras over five exercise tasks. The bras differed in their ability to reduce breast motion; a newer design performed better on some vertical-motion measures. Participants did not report differences between the tested bras in feel, pain, or discomfort. A separate study of 21 Chinese women found that at high treadmill speed, compression bras were associated with less perceived breast discomfort and movement than encapsulation bras, while bra discomfort was greater when stationary and at lower speed. Together, these studies show that activity, speed, and specific garment design matter; they do not settle which everyday bra type is more comfortable or supportive.

How to choose between wireless and underwire
- Start with fit. Assess cups, band, and straps together rather than treating the wire as the sole cause of discomfort.
- Decide what you want from the bra. Consider your preferred feel and silhouette, including lift or separation, without assuming either style will produce the same result for everyone.
- Match the garment to the activity. For exercise, assess sports bras designed for that use; everyday-bra findings should not be substituted for activity-specific support evidence.
- Judge the individual bra in wear. Construction labels alone cannot establish that a bra will fit or feel comfortable for you.
