Choose a laptop by starting with the software, games, and devices you need it to support—not by choosing a processor label or “AI PC” badge first. Confirm that your essential apps and peripherals work on the platform, then match processor, graphics, memory, and storage to your regular workload. Compare the resulting configurations for display comfort, battery life, weight, ports, upgrade options, warranty, and total cost.

Start with the software and devices you must use

Write down the applications you rely on, the tasks you perform in them, and any school, employer, or personal requirements. Include games, external displays, printers, docks, storage devices, and specialist equipment. A laptop can have impressive specifications and still be the wrong choice if a required program or peripheral does not work with its operating system or processor platform.

Check the software publisher’s requirements for the exact application and version. Microsoft’s laptop guide puts it plainly: “Check the system requirements for the programs you plan to use.” Also confirm that drivers exist for important peripherals and that any school or employer policy permits the device.

Windows and macOS are full desktop operating systems with broad application functionality. ChromeOS is more centered on web and cloud workflows, with support for Android apps; a Chromebook may suit work that can be done in Chrome or compatible Android apps, but it should not be assumed to run desktop programs or legacy drivers. For specialized software, confirm support before buying. The same caution applies when considering a less familiar processor platform such as Arm-based Snapdragon: ASUS advises checking application and peripheral compatibility rather than assuming every program behaves the same across platforms.

Match performance to the work you actually do

Identify your most demanding regular task—not just what you do most often. Browsing, documents, streaming, and video calls usually call for a responsive mainstream laptop, comfortable input devices, adequate memory, and useful battery life more than maximum CPU or GPU specifications. Creative production, engineering, gaming, and data-heavy work can place substantially different demands on a system.

Workload What to prioritize What to check
Web, documents, streaming, video calls Responsive everyday performance, a comfortable screen and keyboard, adequate memory, and battery life Whether the configuration meets your app requirements; avoid paying for graphics power you will not use
Many apps open or large files Memory headroom and storage suited to local files Whether RAM is soldered or upgradeable, and whether the SSD can be replaced or expanded
Photo, video, 3D, CAD, simulation, or data work The CPU, GPU, memory, and display requirements of the exact application Whether the app requires or benefits from discrete graphics and whether the laptop sustains the workload
Gaming GPU capability, cooling, and a display suited to the games you play Game availability on the operating system, required graphics performance, and realistic battery expectations
On-device AI features Support for the specific features you plan to use Which applications and functions use the NPU; assess it alongside CPU, memory, battery, and display

Integrated graphics are generally enough for ordinary computing. A discrete GPU may be appropriate for demanding games, professional video work, 3D, or other graphics-heavy applications, but the application’s own requirements should guide the decision. RTINGS notes in its buying guide that Windows has substantially more game titles than macOS; check the games you actually want rather than relying on a platform-wide assumption.

AI branding is not a substitute for software fit. If you expect to use on-device AI, verify that your intended features and applications support the laptop’s hardware. Otherwise, processor performance, memory, display, and battery may matter more to your day-to-day experience.

Choose memory and storage for your workload

RAM affects how comfortably a laptop handles multiple applications and large projects. Recommendations differ because they address different users: Microsoft’s undated student guidance gives a range of 8–16 GB, while RTINGS recommends at least 16 GB for many buyers in its guide as of 2025, with exceptions for very light use and some Chromebooks. Treat those as source-specific guidance, not universal minimum requirements; check demanding applications’ requirements and your multitasking habits.

Before choosing a lower-memory configuration on the assumption that you can add RAM later, confirm whether memory is soldered or upgradeable. The same principle applies to storage: verify whether the SSD can be replaced or expanded rather than assuming it can.

Size storage around files you keep locally, not simply the laptop’s price tier. Microsoft gives students a range of 256 GB to 1 TB or more and notes that cloud use can reduce local-storage needs. RTINGS says 256 GB may work for light, cloud-centered use and describes 512 GB as a safer general choice. ASUS also suggests 512 GB for many everyday users and 1 TB or more for creative applications, games, large photo libraries, or video projects. These are differing guide recommendations; your software, file sizes, and cloud habits determine the useful capacity.

Balance screen, portability, battery, and performance

A laptop that is powerful enough for a task may still be uncomfortable to carry or use. Higher-performance components can bring more heat, fan noise, weight, or reduced battery life. Consider where the laptop will spend most of its time, how often you carry it, and whether it must run demanding workloads away from an outlet.

  • Display: Check size, resolution, brightness, and panel characteristics. Color accuracy matters for color-sensitive creative work; refresh rate may matter for games or motion-heavy use. Consider whether you need touch or pen input.
  • Keyboard and touchpad: If you type for long sessions, prioritize a layout and pointing surface that feel comfortable to you.
  • Battery: Look for tests of the exact configuration under use resembling yours. A battery figure for a different screen, processor, or graphics configuration may not reflect your model.
  • Weight and size: Choose for your actual commute and workspace. Penn’s institutional guide uses roughly 2–3 pounds for its lightweight category and 2.5–4.5 pounds for its midweight category; these are examples, not universal category boundaries.
  • Ports: Confirm the built-in connections needed for charging, external displays, and peripherals. Account for any adapter or dock you would need if the laptop lacks them.

Comparison area Questions to answer
Software and platform Does it support required operating systems, app versions, drivers, peripherals, and school or employer policies?
CPU and GPU Do they meet the applications’ requirements and perform well for your relevant workload?
Memory and storage Is there enough headroom for your apps and files? Are RAM and SSD replaceable or expandable?
Display and input Are size, brightness, resolution, color, keyboard, touchpad, and touch or pen support right for your use?
Mobility Are weight, chassis size, ports, and battery performance acceptable in realistic use?
Ownership and price What are the warranty, support period, repair or upgrade options, and total price of the needed configuration?

Institutional purchasing categories can help illustrate trade-offs but should not be mistaken for a universal consumer price list. For example, the University of Pennsylvania Information Systems & Computing guide, last updated June 25, 2026, lists estimated prices and warranty periods for its own notebook categories:

Penn category Windows estimate macOS estimate Warranty in the guide
Value $750–$1,000 $600–$1,400 1 year
Lightweight $1,600–$2,400 $1,550–$1,750 3 years
Midweight $1,700–$2,550 $2,550–$3,100 3 years

These are Penn’s institutional estimates and category configurations, not market-wide prices or a guarantee of current retail cost. Check live pricing and warranty terms for the precise laptop configuration you are considering.

A practical selection sequence

  1. List requirements: Record essential apps, games, operating-system needs, peripherals, and any school or employer rules.
  2. Eliminate incompatible platforms: Check publisher requirements, driver availability, and processor-platform support before comparing specifications.
  3. Set the workload target: Identify the most demanding regular task, then determine its CPU, graphics, and memory requirements.
  4. Set capacity and mobility needs: Estimate local storage, decide how much weight and screen size suit your routine, and identify necessary ports and battery expectations.
  5. Compare exact configurations: Check display, keyboard, cooling, realistic battery results, upgradeability, warranty, and the full price—not just the advertised model name.
  6. Choose the best fit, not the highest number: Prefer the least costly configuration that meets your requirements with suitable headroom, comfort, and portability.
