Choose a 1TB portable SSD for a smaller, defined set of files; 2TB if you need a broader working set or room to grow; and 4TB for a larger active library or archive. These are practical starting points, not universal cutoffs. Estimate the files you will carry, account for growth and working space, then check that the drive works with your devices.
Compare 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB portable SSDs
| Capacity | Practical fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | A smaller working set, file transfers, or a more limited library. | How much space your current files use, how much remains available after formatting, and whether you will outgrow it soon. |
| 2TB | A broader working set or a drive with more room for expected growth. | Whether you are storing active files, a backup, or both; those uses can require different amounts of space. |
| 4TB | A larger active library or archive when the extra capacity is useful to you. | Device compatibility, budget, and whether a portable SSD is the right medium for a large archive. |
Samsung lists its T7 portable SSD in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, but the size that fits depends on your files and how you use the drive. [Samsung US buying guide; Samsung T7 product information]
Estimate the space your files will take
Start with the files you plan to carry
Check the size of the actual folders you intend to store, rather than relying on broad labels such as “photos” or “video.” Include project files, exports, downloaded media, and any applications or other data you plan to keep on the drive. If the drive will hold a backup as well as working files, count both.
Leave room for growth and working space
Use your current total as a baseline, then allow for files you expect to add and temporary or intermediate files created by your workflow. A drive filled close to capacity can leave little room for new material. The right allowance depends on how quickly your files grow; there is no universal amount to add.

Use media estimates cautiously
Samsung’s US buying guide estimates approximately 45GB for one hour of 100Mbps 4K video. That is Samsung’s estimate for the stated bitrate, not a general rule for all 4K footage; recording settings and encoding affect file size. Samsung also says the actual number of stored images may vary with camera settings, image quality, and other factors. [Samsung US buying guide]
Storage charts can help with rough planning, but their estimates depend on assumptions about file sizes. Kingston notes that formatting and other functions use some of a storage device’s listed capacity. [Kingston storage chart]

Decide whether the drive is for work, transfer, backup, or archive
Active work and transfers
For files you actively edit or move between devices, size the drive for the current working set plus expected additions and any temporary files your workflow needs. Also confirm that the drive and its connection are suitable for your device and the speed your work requires; capacity alone does not establish workflow performance.
Backups
A backup drive may need more capacity than the files you currently expect to save, especially if you retain older versions or back up multiple devices. Dell gives the example that a computer with a 1TB internal drive will generally benefit from a backup drive with 2TB or more. Dell presents this as guidance, not a requirement for every backup design; large photo, video, or creative archives may need substantially more. [Dell external backup guidance]

Do not make a single portable SSD the only copy of important data. If it holds the only copy, drive failure, loss, or damage could leave you without those files.
Archives
For material you rarely access, compare the convenience of keeping it on a portable SSD with the capacity and cost of other storage approaches. A 4TB drive may suit a larger archive, but the amount of data and how often you need to retrieve it should guide the choice.

Check usable capacity and device compatibility
A drive’s listed capacity and the amount shown by a computer may differ. Samsung explains that it defines 1GB and 1TB using decimal byte measurements, while a computer may use a different measurement standard; formatting also takes some space. Plan around the capacity your device reports after setup, not only the number on the packaging. [Samsung T7 product information; Kingston storage chart]
Portable SSD compatibility varies by model and device. Samsung lists portable SSD use with PCs, phones, cameras, and gaming consoles, but you should confirm the exact drive model, device, connection, and workflow before buying. [Samsung portable SSD support]

Choose your capacity
- List the files and uses. Decide whether the drive will hold active work, transfers, backups, an archive, or a combination.
- Measure the current data. Check the size of the folders or devices you plan to include.
- Allow for growth and working space. Consider how quickly you add files and whether your workflow creates temporary data.
- Compare the estimate with usable capacity. Account for formatting and the difference between decimal and computer-reported capacity.
- Verify device fit and current price. Check compatibility with your computer, phone, camera, or console and compare current listings; prices and availability can change.
If your estimate fits comfortably within 1TB, that can be a sensible choice. If you need more room or expect the library to grow, consider 2TB. If you have a substantially larger active collection or archive, consider 4TB. These are decision aids, not fixed rules for particular kinds of users.
