To replace a graphics card, first check the card and PC manuals, then shut down and unplug the computer before swapping the hardware. Driver cleanup depends on the vendors involved: use the relevant AMD or Intel procedure, and reserve Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) for cases where the normal route fails or the vendor specifically recommends it. You do not need to run a third-party cleanup tool for every routine upgrade.
Before you open the case
Check the replacement card’s system requirements and the manuals for both the card and your PC. The exact fit, power connections, and compatibility requirements depend on the specific hardware; AMD’s installation guidance covers its RX 6000 family and is not a universal compatibility checklist.
If you are moving from another graphics vendor to Intel Arc, Intel recommends removing the old third-party graphics driver before installing the Arc card. For other vendor transitions, use the applicable vendor’s current instructions rather than assuming one cleanup utility handles every driver package.
How to swap the graphics card
- Shut down and disconnect. Turn off the PC, unplug its power cable and attached devices, and follow the system manual. AMD advises waiting after unplugging before handling components.
- Discharge static electricity. Follow the PC or card manual’s handling guidance. AMD identifies a grounded antistatic wrist strap as an option.
- Open the case and remove the old card. Disconnect any power leads attached to the graphics card. Release its case fastener and the motherboard slot latch, then carefully remove the card.
- Install the replacement. Seat the new card in the appropriate slot and secure it as directed by the manuals. Reconnect the power leads required by that card.
- Reconnect and start the PC. Reconnect the display cable to the new card and other devices, close the case, then reconnect power and start the computer.
These handling steps reflect AMD’s RX 6000 installation and card-removal guidance; follow the instructions for your own PC and card if they differ. AMD’s RX 6000 setup sequence continues with installing its drivers/software and restarting.

Choose the driver cleanup method for your vendor
Start with the appropriate vendor route. AMD and Intel document different tools and steps; neither vendor’s instructions establish a universal method for removing every manufacturer’s drivers.

AMD: installer Clean Install or Cleanup Utility
AMD’s Radeon installer offers manual product selection or automatic detection. When it detects an existing Radeon Software version, it may present Clean Install; AMD says this option attempts to remove detected Radeon software and drivers before installing the selected components.

AMD Cleanup Utility is a separate Windows option. AMD says it removes AMD graphics and audio drivers/software to prepare for new graphics software, but does not modify AMD chipset drivers. Intel: clean install or Device Manager
For Intel graphics on Windows, the Intel driver installer’s “Execute a clean installation” option removes old drivers, restores Intel settings to defaults, and clears shader cache. Intel also documents removing the driver through Device Manager. Check the computer manufacturer’s driver guidance as well: OEM driver packages may be customized for a particular system.

Switching to Intel Arc from another vendor
Intel recommends uninstalling the third-party graphics driver before installing an Arc card. Its Device Manager steps include selecting “Delete the driver software for this device,” restarting, and repeating the removal if the device remains. Intel says DDU may be used if that process fails. DDU: a deeper removal option, not a routine requirement
Intel’s DDU instructions describe booting Windows into Safe Mode, selecting GPU and the target device, then choosing “Clean and restart” or “Clean and shutdown.” Use the option that fits your next step: restart to continue in Windows, or shut down if you are about to replace hardware. Intel presents DDU as an alternative when the Device Manager process fails in its Arc transition guidance, not as a mandatory step for every upgrade. See Intel’s DDU instructions.

The vendor procedures cited here do not establish a current NVIDIA-specific cleanup sequence. For an NVIDIA upgrade or a switch to or from NVIDIA, consult the current official instructions for your exact card and driver package rather than extrapolating from AMD or Intel utilities.
