“Fart trails” is a joking nickname for the Scent Trails effect in Marvel’s Wolverine. The trails help Logan follow a specific scent or clue; they are not a fart mechanic. You can adjust several Senses indicators in the game’s settings, and the latest official update located adds a way to reveal story-related scent trails with the Hint button.
What are Wolverine’s “fart trails”?
They are visual Senses cues that represent Logan tracking a scent or other clue. Insomniac’s official materials call the feature Scent Trails or a Senses effect, not “fart trails.” The nickname is an informal joke used in coverage and discussion.
Reporting attributes the mechanic’s explanation to Insomniac community and marketing director James Stevenson: the effect appears when Logan is tracking a particular scent or sound, such as a person, whisky, or another clue scent. Those examples come from Stevenson as reported by a secondary outlet; the official patch notes do not list every trigger. GamesRadar’s report
When do the trails appear?
They appear when a Senses cue is relevant to tracking a scent or clue in the game. Some cues are tied to story progression, while others can mark optional discoveries such as Whisky Bottles. The exact cue depends on what Logan is tracking; not every visual trail serves the same purpose.

For story-related scent trails, Insomniac update 1.002.001 added an option to show them using the Hint button, which is R3 by default. Insomniac describes this as a toggle for story-related Scent Trails. The option therefore provides a way to call up those trails when needed; it is distinct from the individual toggles for the optional indicators above. Insomniac update 1.002.001 patch notes
