If a PlayStation Plus game will not download or start, first check the PlayStation service status, the account and membership that provide access, and whether the title is still eligible. Then use the symptom-specific steps below: restart a stuck download, restore licenses for a locked game, or follow the PS5 or PS4 launch steps for an installed game.
Start with the symptom

These are diagnostic categories, not proof of a single cause. Sony’s download troubleshooting guide covers PS5 and PS4; its game launch guide has additional console-specific steps.
If the download will not start or is stuck
Retry the item in the download list
- Open the console’s download list and pause the PlayStation Plus game.
- Resume it and see whether the download proceeds.
- If it still fails, cancel and delete the queued download.
- Find the eligible game in your Game Library and start the download again.
Check service status, software, and space
- Check PlayStation Network Service Status. If Sony reports a service issue, wait for it to be resolved before repeatedly retrying.
- On PS5, check for a system software update in Settings, and compare available space under Settings > Storage with the space required on the game’s product page.
- If the retry still fails, use Sony’s console-specific troubleshooting guide rather than assuming the problem is your connection.
If the game is locked, missing, or no longer available
Confirm the entitlement
- Make sure the console is signed in to the account that has access to the game.
- For a PlayStation Plus benefit, check that the membership is active and that its plan includes the game. A Game Catalog title may stop being available when it leaves the catalog; seeing it there previously does not guarantee current access.
- If access depends on another person’s purchase or membership sharing, check the applicable console-sharing setup: Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5, or primary PS4 activation on PS4.

Restore licenses
If the account and entitlement look correct but the game remains locked, restore licenses. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. PlayStation Support says, “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” Follow the official license-restoration guide if the menu differs on your console.

If the game downloads but will not launch
Try the basic recovery steps
- Restart the console and try launching the game again.
- Restore licenses using the PS5 or PS4 path above.
- Check for system software updates.
- Delete the game and download it again from your Library.
PS5: try Safe Mode and check USB storage
If the game still will not start, use the Safe Mode options Sony recommends to clear the cache and rebuild the database. Sony lists reinstalling system software as a later troubleshooting step; follow its launch-issues instructions carefully before using it. If the PS5 game is installed on USB extended storage, move it to the console’s internal storage and try again.
Optional network check
If you have re-downloaded the game and suspect a connection problem, Sony suggests trying a wired connection if possible. Connect the console to your router by Ethernet if your setup supports it. A wired connection cannot restore an expired catalog entitlement, an inactive membership, or a missing license.

If the error persists
Look up the exact code shown on screen in PlayStation’s error-code directory instead of applying a guess based on a generic symptom. If the listed steps do not resolve the issue, contact PlayStation Support and provide the exact error code or message, what happens, and the steps needed to reproduce it. Include the date and time you tried to access the game; attach a screenshot or video if possible.
